Book excerpt: 'Dark, sharp and compelling' PETER JAMES 'Fantastic' MARTINA COLE 'Britain's answer to Harry Bosch' MATT HILTON 'If you haven't read M W Craven yet, now is the time to start' Abir Mukherjee ______________________ It's Christmas and a serial killer is leaving displayed body parts all over Cumbria. A strange message is left at each scene: #BSC6 Called in to investigate, the National Crime Agency's Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw are faced with a case that makes no sense. Why were some victims anaesthetized, while others died in appalling agony? Why is their only suspect denying what they can irrefutably prove but admitting to things they weren't even aware of? And why did the victims all take the same two weeks off work three years earlier? And when a disgraced FBI agent gets in touch things take an even darker turn. Because she doesn't think Poe is dealing with a serial killer at all; she thinks he's dealing with someone far, far worse - a man who calls himself the Curator. And nothing will ever be the same again . . . Praise for Black Summer: 'Truly mind-blowing' A. A. Dhand 'A book that shines with tension, wit and invention' William Shaw 'Washington Poe - a rising giant in detective fiction' Alison Bruce 'A twisty thriller with a killer plot Ed James 'I loved this book!' Jo Jakeman 'One of the best British crime novels I've read in a long time . . . Simply an unputdownable page-turner' Nick Oldham 'Grabs you from the very first page. A dark and brilliantly twisted crime thriller, bringing back the inimitable Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw' Colin Falconer 'Dark and twisted in all the right places. Poe is a great mix of compelling, complex & charismatic, and well on his way to becoming one of the standout characters in crime fiction' Robert Scragg 'In Tilly and Poe, MW Craven has created a stand-out duo who are two of the most compelling characters in crime fiction in recent years. They deserve to join the ranks of Holmes and Watson, Rebus and Clarke, Hill and Jordan . . .' Fiona Cummins 'Dark, thrilling and unputdownable with sharply drawn characters that stride off the page' Victoria Selman 'Gleefully gory and witty, with a terrific sense of place' Sunday Times

Book Around Morecambe Bay

Download or read book Around Morecambe Bay written by William Reginald Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morecambe Bay has been described as 'a great inner sea'. Low tide reveals a tawny desert 120 square miles in extent. Crossing the Sands - and the estuaries of Keer and Kent - was once part of a daring west coast route linking Lancashire with its northern territory of Furness. A milestone on the Cartmel peninsula gives the distance to Lancaster 'over sands' as 15 miles, less than half that of the land route via Kendal. The safe passage of travellers was ensured by appointed guides. Fishermen from Morecambe used trawlers known as 'nobbies' and were part of a lively coastal trade. At low tide the horse-and-cart fishermen would take to the sands, seeking shrimp. In his inimitable and entertaining style, the author follows the shoreline, showing the unique points of interest of each area: Ulverston has a lighthouse; at Dalton, clog irons and red earth hint at an industrial past; Furness Abbey was one of the richest in the north country; Barrow rose from a hamlet to become the world's biggest centre for iron and steel in Victorian times. This fascinating book will interest visitors and residents alike.

Book Building the Trident Network

Download or read book Building the Trident Network written by Maggie Mort and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Building the Trident Network, Maggie Mort approaches the United Kingdom's Trident submarine and missile system as a sociotechnical network. Drawing on the sociology of scientific and technical knowledge and on actor-network theory, Mort recounts how the Trident program was stabilized in the United Kingdom and brought into "successful" production. She uncovers the nature of this success by retelling unofficial histories of Trident, of production roads not taken, and of potential technological "distractions." The production of Trident, she shows, was not inevitable but contingent and problematic. Using material from interviews and local texts, Mort explores the emergence of a counternetwork in the form of a workers' campaign for alternative technologies. She develops concepts of "disenrollment" and "absent intermediaries," in which redundant workers and marginalized technologies serve to discipline and reinforce the dominant network as production shrinks. She also examines the maintenance of the barrier between the technical and the social/political in this context. The management of uncertainties within the Trident production program emerges as critical to its successful completion.
