Book excerpt: This exploratory study includes research regarding the academic success and barriers international students encounter while studying in an American postsecondary institution. Using a quantitative research method, a survey of international students demonstrated the requirements for success are not the same as for domestic students. The events that took place on September 11, 2001, have also made an impact on the success and failure rate of international students. With increased and heightened security on F-1 visas issued to students, it has left the United States working harder to gain and retain international students. Globally, other international institutions have recognized the vulnerable weak spot for America and are capitalizing upon it. The study presents options that may permit U.S. postsecondary institutions to focus their recruitment, admission, and retention efforts toward regaining a declining market share.

Book excerpt: "The economics of American higher education are driven by one key factor--the availability of students willing to pay tuition--and many related factors that determine what schools they attend. By digging into the data, economist Nathan Grawe has created probability models for predicting college attendance. What he sees are alarming events on the horizon that every college and university needs to understand. Overall, he spots demographic patterns that are tilting the US population toward the Hispanic southwest. Moreover, since 2007, fertility rates have fallen by 12 percent. Higher education analysts recognize the destabilizing potential of these trends. However, existing work fails to adjust headcounts for college attendance probabilities and makes no systematic attempt to distinguish demand by institution type. This book analyzes demand forecasts by institution type and rank, disaggregating by demographic groups. Its findings often contradict the dominant narrative: while many schools face painful contractions, demand for elite schools is expected to grow by 15+ percent. It is essential to examine both the known and latent barriers that prevent foreign-born students from successfully completing the first four years of college. The purpose of this study is to assess the applicability of Bourdieuian notions of capital in explaining the discrepancy in educational attainment between foreign-born and native born students. The data is from the 1999 National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen (n=3176), a survey designed to test various theoretical explanations for minority underachievement in higher education. Stepwise regressions were used to determine the individual impact of nativity, race, cultural capital, and economic capital to graduating within four years. In the unadjusted model, nativity was moderately associated with four-year graduation ([beta]=0.760; p=0.053). However in the fully adjusted model, I found that race was more important than nativity status when predicting the odds of graduating, with African American students having a significantly lower odds of graduating in four years ([beta]=0.576; p=0.000), than white students. Gender and economic capital were also significantly associated with 4-year graduation rates, with men less likely to graduate than women ([beta]=0.733; p=0.000). And individuals in the highest income category (over $75,000/year) were more likely to graduate in four years than those in the making less than 19,999 per year ([beta]=1.645; p=0.028). Parental disciplinary style was also a significant (p=0.000) correlate with four year graduation rates. Future studies should repeat these inquiries in a dataset that includes less selective institutions.

Book excerpt: Racially and ethnically minoritized students encounter constricted access when applying to the most rejective postsecondary institutions in the United States. Mechanisms that constrict access, reflect systemic oppression, and perpetuate institutionalized oppression are standardized test scores. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person testing centers closed in 2020. Subsequently, many postsecondary institutions that previously required test scores with admission applications moved away from test-required admissions policies. This study set out to determine which U.S. postsecondary institutions with an admit rate 15% or less implemented a test-optional admissions policy during the pandemic. Further, the study set out to determine the impacts of test-optional admissions policies on the enrollment of some racially and ethnically minoritized students at the most rejective U.S. postsecondary institutions. The study employed an exploratory descriptive and comparative statistical analysis using the integrated postsecondary education data system (IPEDS) from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Of the 28 institutions considered to be the most rejective, 25 implemented a test-optional admissions policy for applicants aspiring to gain admission to the fall 2021 semester. One year prior, 10 institutions had implemented a test-optional admissions policy. Test-optional admissions policies may have increased access for racially and ethnically minoritized students only 1.6% of the time. Therefore, test-optional policies do not, at least in the context of this study, substantially expand access for racially and ethnically minoritized students. Further research should include a qualitative study of enrollment leaders at the most rejective institutions and students' thoughts on test score admissions policies.
