Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a great honor and pleasure for me to introduce this book; an honor, because of the scientific renown and authority of the investigators who have edited the volume and contributed the chapters; a pleasure, because my own long-lasting interest in the baroreflexes has always gone in the same directions as those along which the authors of this book have conceived and organized their work. It is particularly meaningful, in my opinion, that the very title of this volume underlines the integrative functions and the clinical aspects of baroreceptor reflexes. Under the aspect of integration, it is more and more apparent that baroreceptor reflexes, though preponderantly influencing cardiovascular functions, are not limited to cardiovascular control. Their influence on respiration has been well known since the earliest studies on baroreflexes, and wider influences have more recently been shown, e. g. , on hormone release, on sleep and vigilance, and on emotional behavior. Even within the scope of cardiovascular regulation, the integrated action of baroreflexes is not only directly exerted on the heart and blood vessels, but is also exerted through more devious but no less important routes, such as renin release from juxtaglomerular cells and sodium and water reabsorption by the renal tubules.

Book Reflex Control of the Circulation

Download or read book Reflex Control of the Circulation written by Irving H. Zucker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflex Control of the Circulation presents an interdisciplinary discussion of concepts in the reflex control of circulation. This volume describes aspects of autonomic receptor physiology, central pathways of reflex control, the electrophysiology of cardiovascular afferents, the interaction between reflexes, the autonomic control of regional blood flows, the autonomic control of fluid and electrolyte balance, and neurohumoral control of the circulation through normal and pathological states (e.g., hypertension, congestive heart failure). In addition, the regulation of regional blood flow during exercise and developmental aspects of reflex control are examined. Any researcher interested in the autonomic system and its role in circulation will find this book fascinating reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trigeminocardiac Reflex is a comprehensive tutorial reference to the science, diagnosis, and possible treatment of the trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) that is usually initiated when the trigeminal nerve is disturbed during intercranial surgery. Since first reported in 1999 by co-Editor Bernhard Schaller, the research focused on TCR is expanding. While its instance is rare, new discoveries are not only increasing diagnosis, but also providing more effective treatment protocols. This text is ideal as a reference for clinical and research neurologists, as a general introduction for clinical presentation, and as a foundation for new research. Represents the first tutorial reference focused on the Trigeminocardiac Reflex (TCR) Content organized by two of the leading scientists in the area, Dr. Tumul Chowdhury (University of Manitoba) and Prof. Bernhard Schaller (University of Southampton) Defines TCR, its onset, and possible treatments Establishes a knowledge base for the future study of the TCR and treatment protocols

Autonomic Neurology is divided into 3 sections. The first section includes 5 chapters reviewing the anatomical and biochemical mechanisms of central and peripheral nervous system control of autonomic function, principles of autonomic pharmacology, and a clinical and laboratory approach to the diagnosis of autonomic disorders. The second section focuses on the pathophysiology and management of orthostatic hypotension, postural tachycardia, baroreflex failure; syncope, disorders of sweating, neurogenic bladder and sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal dysmotility, and autonomic hyperactivity. The final section is devoted to specific autonomic disorders, including central neurodegenerative disorders; common peripheral neuropathies with prominent autonomic failure; painful small fiber neuropathies; autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathies and neuropathies; focal brain disorders; focal spinal cord disorders; and chronic pain disorders with autonomic manifestations. This book is the product of the extensive experience of its contributors in the evaluation and management of the many patients with autonomic symptoms who are referred for neurologic consultation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Autonomic Neurology focuses on clinical scenarios and presentation of clinical cases and includes several figures showing the results of normal and abnormal autonomic testing in typical conditions. Its abundance of tables summarizing the differential diagnosis, testing, and management of autonomic disorders also help set this book apart from other books focused on the autonomic nervous system.
