Book Francesco Geminiani Thematic catalogue

Download or read book Francesco Geminiani Thematic catalogue written by Enrico Careri and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Francesco Geminiani is a relatively well-known composer whose name is frequently cited in studies of baroque music, his biography and works have been relatively little researched. His music was often analyzed without due reference to biographical and historical background, and his multifarious activities as violinist, composer, theorist, and small-scale entrepreneur were never considered in their full interrelationship. This volume attempts to provide a comprehensive account of a composer who in the first half of the eighteenth century dominated the English musical scene alongside Handel. The book traces Geminiani's life and career from his birth in Lucca in December 1687 to his activities in three centers: London, Paris, and Dublin. After analyzing the critical reception to Geminiani, both contemporary and modern, Careri examines his compositions by genre, illustrating his remarks with thirty-nine music examples, some presented in facsimile. The book also includes a complete thematic catalogue with music incipits, containing details of primary sources, reworkings and transcriptions, and modern editions. --From publisher's description.

Book The Compositional Style of Francesco Geminiani

Download or read book The Compositional Style of Francesco Geminiani written by Valerie R. Weber and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Francesco Geminiani was highly regarded as a violinist, composer, and theorist during the late Baroque era. During his lifetime he was considered equalin status to the foremost composers of the day; however, relatively little information is available regarding his life and works today. This lack of information is largely a result of controversy among his peers regarding the merit of his work, specifically in reference to melodic style, structural consistency and harmonic practices. Critical views of such authors as Sir John Hawkins and Charles Burney have been reflected in later historical writings, considerably suppressing further interest in the composer. The first objective of this thesis is the examination of Geminianis 1752 treatise, Guida Armonica, its content, and implications for potential harmonic and structural functions. The second objective is to identify specific characteristics of Geminianis music that distinguish him from other composers of the period.

Book excerpt: Many of us think of the ill-behaved celebrity and the tabloid splash as modern inventions, but the antics of footballers and soap stars are as nothing when set alongside the hell-raising of the 18th century celebs. The Gin Lane Gazette is stuffed with true stories of boozy MPs who settled their political differences with duels in Hyde Park; peers of the realm who sat the unburied corpses of their cherished mistresses at their dinner tables; entertainers who rode horses standing upright in the saddle, while wearing a mask of bees; and famous courtesans who ate 1,000-guinea banknotes stuffed into sandwiches, simply to make a point. Before it was dashed from their lips by the Victorian party-poopers, our Georgian forebears drank deep from the cup of life.

Book Ornamentation in Baroque and Post Baroque Music with Special Emphasis on J S Bach

Download or read book Ornamentation in Baroque and Post Baroque Music with Special Emphasis on J S Bach written by Frederick Neumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ornaments play an enormous role in the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and ambiguities in their notation (as well as their frequent omission in the score) have left doubt as to how composers intended them to be interpreted. Frederick Neumann, himself a violinist and conductor, questions the validity of the rigid principles applied to their performance. In this controversial work, available for the first time in paperback, he argues that strict constraints are inconsistent with the freedom enjoyed by musicians of the period. The author takes an entirely new look at ornamentation, and particularly that of J. S. Bach. He draws on extensive research in England, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States to show that prevailing interpretations are based on inadequate evidence. These restrictive interpretations have been far-reaching in their effect on style. By questioning them, this work continues to stimulate a reorientation in our understandiing of Baroque and post-Baroque music.
