Le chef-d'œuvre baroque est une œuvre d'art totale. L'Europe entière y succombe, même la France, pourtant supposée cartésienne. Espagnols et Portugais emmèneront ces ors, ces flammes et ces anges en Amérique Latine, mais aussi en Extrême-Orient. C'est la première fois qu'un mouvement artistique devient véritablement mondial.
