Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book One, the beginning, introduces the main character Barney Bear. The story details her train ride north away from where the civil war fighting takes place, and the adventures she has meeting new friends along the way to Beary Towne. Strange and unusual things happen to Barney Bear that she does not understand why. She has red fur and green eyes and looks different from all the other bears. She doesn't know that she belongs to the red fur clan and that she is destined for a life that is different from what she has known living with her grandparents in Richmond, Virginia. Her grandparents know she is different and have a journal about her parents and the red fur clan. They have not explained the family history to her because they believe she is too young for anything unusual or special to happen to her. However, things do happen on her train ride north through Indian Territory. Her life changes directions although she does not understand why all of this is happening only to her and no one else. She meets a Chief Furry Paws who bestows the gift of knowledge and the gift of the google to Barney Bear. They are gifts that she does not understand how to use and she does not understand why she cannot take them with her. Barney Bear's friend Leonardo tries to help her figure out what happened to her one night during their train trip through Indian Territory. He has sketches of the evening events that were seen by all the train passengers. At the Indian village with Chief Furry Paws Barney Bear sees flashes of her future when she looks down on the platform that she is standing on while the Chief gives her instructions. She does not realize it is the future until later when she is given a puppy named 4-Paws, a horse named Patience, and after Grandma Bear has sewn a riding outfit for her. The Silverback Bears who reside on Magic Mountain are friends with Chief Furry Paws. Together they help guide Barney Bear as she learns and acquires her six guns of knowledge, understanding, confidence, determination, honesty, and respect. She learns about these virtues through her travels and adventures across the country in future stories. After the war Barney Bear returns to Richmond, Virginia, with her friend Leonardo to set up a school for orphan bears. She is so successful that the Bear Council wants her to travel to another city and set up a school in Atlanta. However, she faces trouble from a friend named Snuggie. Snuggie is someone she met on the train ride north and a schoolmate who attended the Beary Towne Academy. He and Leonardo gave Barney Bear a puppy named 4-Paws as a birthday gift while they were at Beary Towne. Snuggie wants 4-Paws back. There are 25 more books planned for the series. They are educational and nonviolent fun books for grades second through fifth grade. Other books will see her learning and acquiring the magical guns, her life travels and the new friends she meets along the way. There will be funny stories and serious ones where she must apply what she learned through the special red fur bear clan's life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the literary absurd? What are its key textual features? How can it be analysed? How do different readers respond to absurdist literature?Taking the theories and methodologies of stylistics as its underlying analytical framework, Reading the Absurd tackles each of these questions. Selected key works in English literature are examined in depth to reveal significant aspects of absurd style. Its analytical approach combines stylistic inquiry with a cognitive perspective on language, literature and reading which sheds new light on the human experience of literary reading.By exploring the literary absurd as a linguistic and experiential phenomena, while at the same time reflecting upon its essential historical and cultural situation, Joanna Gavins brings a new perspective to the absurd aesthetic.

Book The Catholic Church in Ireland Today

Download or read book The Catholic Church in Ireland Today written by David Carroll Cochran and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-01-22 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Church that once enjoyed devotional loyalty, political influence, and institutional power unrivaled in Europe, the Catholic Church in Ireland now faces collapse. Devastated by a series of reports on clerical sexual abuse, challenged publicly during several political battles, and painfully aware of plunging Mass attendance, the Irish Church today is confronted with the loss of its institutional legitimacy. This study is the first international and interdisciplinary attempt to consider the scope of the problem, analyze issues that are crucial to the Irish context, and identify signs of both resilience and renewal. In addition to an overview of the current status and future directions of Irish Catholicism, The Catholic Church in Ireland Today examines specific issues such as growing secularism, the changing image of Irish bishops, generational divides, Catholic migrants to Ireland, the abuse crisis and responses in Ireland and the United States, Irish missionaries, the political role of Irish priests, the 2012 Dublin Eucharistic Congress, and contemplative strands in Irish identity. This book identifies the key issues that students of Irish society and others interested in Catholic culture must examine in order to understand the changing roles of religion in the contemporary world.

Download or read book Lloyd Hamilton written by Anthony Balducci and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-01-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first glance, Lloyd Hamilton was a large, baby-faced comic who walked like a duck. To the trained eye, Hamilton demonstrated keen timing and an inventive mind, providing wry humor rich in emotion during his 20 year career. Perhaps most importantly, Hamilton was greatly admired by his fellow comics, receiving praise from the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. This book explores Hamilton's life and work, beginning with his conservative, middle-class childhood and continuing through the comic's entry into show business as a theatre extra, his most memorable role as half of silent comedy's "Ham and Bud" duo, and his first feature film, The Darker Self. The author examines Hamilton's private life and alcoholism and the decline of his health and career, which led to his death at the age of 43. The book includes exclusive photographs from the Hamilton family, a filmography with detailed plot descriptions, many behind-the-scenes facts, and an analysis of Hamilton's critical lost feature film A Self-Made Failure.
