Book excerpt: Progeny from three cycles of a modified recurrent selection scheme were field tested to determine the effectiveness of this strategy for improving tolerance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV-PAV-IL) in a winter wheat population. Symptom severity was not reduced by the selection scheme. The percentage yield of the control was unaffected by the selection scheme. Little genetic variability of symptom expression was detected in the three cycles and the parent population. The effects of initial dosage of BYDV on symptom expression in spring oats and winter wheat was determined. Zero to 126 Rhopalosiphum padi vectoring BYDV-PAV-IL were placed on four oat and four wheat cultivars. At an early disease evaluation all oat cultivars showed a linear response to increasing dosage. At a later disease rating, the response of Don, Hazel, and Ogle was curvilinear, suggesting a threshold of approximately 54 aphids/hill. IL86-5262 had a linear response at the late evaluation. Yield of Hazel and Ogle was unaffected by increasing dosage. The wheat cultivars Abe and Cardinal responded linearly at early evaluation while the response of Caldwell was curvilinear with a threshold of 90 aphids/hill. Yield was affected similarly. No dosage effects were detected on Abe. In wheat cultivars symptom expression at heading was unaffected by dosage. The results of seven uniformity trials on two brands of microplates, with two monoclonal triple-antibody-sandwich ELISA systems done by two operators indicate that absorbance values were affected by plate brand and operator technique. Several arrangements of 48 treatments with two replications were imposed on the plates. When replications of a treatment were paired in either rows or columns, differences between treatment means were confounded with row and column differences found on the plates, indicating the need for an experimental design. Both the randomized complete block (RCB) design and the alpha (0,1) one restrictional resolvable incomplete block design (alpha design) allowed for more precision than the completely randomized design. The alpha design was more effective than the RCB design.

Despite the development of cultivars with improved levels of resistance to BYD, little is known about the impact that this resistance has on yield loss from the disease. The intent of this research was to estimate yield loss in winter wheat cultivars in Kansas due to BYD and quantify the reduction in losses associated with resistant cultivars. During seven years, BYD disease incidence was visually assessed on numerous winter wheat cultivars in replicated field nurseries. Cultivars were planted about three weeks early to promote disease. When grain yields were regressed against BYD incidence scores, negative linear relationships significantly fit the data for each year and for the combined dataset covering all seven years. The models showed that, depending upon the year, 19-48% (average 33%) of the yields was explained by BYD incidence. For the combined dataset, 29% of the relative yield was explained by BYD incidence. The models predicted that cultivars showing high disease incidence had 25-86% (average 49%) less yield than a hypothetical cultivar that showed zero incidence. Using the models, the moderate level of resistance in the cultivar Everest was calculated to reduce yield loss from BYD by about 73%. Therefore, utilizing visual BYD symptom evaluations in Kansas, coupled with grain yields, is useful to estimate yield loss from the disease. Furthermore, linear models that incorporate those parameters can be used to calculate the impact of improving cultivar resistance to BYD on yield losses.

Yield reductions up to 70% have resulted from barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) infection. Several aphid spp. transmit BYDV. In Missouri, the four common aphids that transmit BYDV are: Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), Sitobion avenae (F.), and Rhopalosiphum maidis (L.). Warm winters have increased the incidence of BYD, triggering producer interest in controlling the aphid vectors. In addition, a species shift in cereal aphids in Missouri has caused previous thresholds to become outdated. For this reason yield loss in soft red winter wheat caused by aphid transmission of barley yellow dwarf virus was measured over a two-year period in central Missouri. The experimental design was a randomized complete block factorial with four replications. The plot factors were variety, seed treatment, and foliar insecticide treatment timings. The four wheat varieties utilized were: 'Truman', 'Ernie', 'Roane', and 'Pioneer 25R37'. The seed treatment was the presence or absence of imidacloprid (0.94 g [AI]/ha). The foliar insecticide treatment included: no application, fall only, fall followed by spring or an application of lambda-cyhalothrin (75.6 g [AI]/ha) every 28 days. Aphid and beneficial species were identified and counted on ten randomly chosen plants per plot every three weeks from crop emergence to physiological maturity. Leaf samples were pulled from each plot at heading and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was run to determine the percentage of plots infected with BYDV. The bird-cherry oat aphid was the most common and economically important species, accounting for> 90% of the total aphids. S. graminum, S. avenae, and R. maidis comprised the remainder of the aphids. Aphid numbers peaked at wheat jointing in 2003 with 771 bird-cherry oat aphids per meter-row. In the 2003-2004 growing season aphid numbers averaged 7 aphids per meter-row in the fall and peaked at 246 aphids per meter-row at jointing. Wheat grain yield was reduced 17 and 13% in 2003 and 2004 respectively. Thousand kernel weights were reduced 10 and 5% in the untreated plots when compared to the treated control in 2003, 2004 respectively. PAV, a strain of BYDV, accounted for 84 and 81% of the symptomatic plots that tested positive for BYDV in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Our results indicate that economic thresholds for bird-cherry oat aphid are 16 aphids per meter-row in the fall and 164 aphids per meter-row at jointing.
