It attacks pine trees in Mexico, where a large amount of timber has died in certain localities, evidently owing to the work of this and the larger Mexican pine beetle. It excavates winding egg galleries (fig. 35) through the inner bark, the larval mines being concealed, like those of the western and southwestern pine beetles, beneath the inner surface of the bark. This species has not been recognized within the United States, but it is not improbable that it may be found in the pine forests of southern Arizona and New Mexico.
