Book Sources of Contamination in Medicinal Products and Medical Devices

Download or read book Sources of Contamination in Medicinal Products and Medical Devices written by Denise Bohrer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first one-volume guide to sources of contamination in pharmaceuticals and medical devices Most books dealing with contaminants in medicinal products often focus on analytical methods for detecting nonspecific impurities. Key to the work of the pharmaceutical chemist, this unique reference helps identify the sources of contamination in medicinal and pharmaceutical products and medical devices. Divided into three parts, Sources of Contamination in Medicinal Products and Medical Devices covers chemical, microbiological, and physical (particulate matter) contamination, including those originating from sterilization procedures. As compelling as a medical documentary, the book sheds light on how impurities and contaminants can enter the human body transported via a specific product or treatment. Focusing on only those medicinal products and medical devices that may lead to exposure to contaminants harmful to human health, the book offers a comprehensive, systematic look at the entire universe of medical contamination: Chemical contaminants including residual solvents, catalyst residuals, and genotoxic impurities in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) Diagnostic imaging agents (i.e., radiopharmaceuticals and contrast agents) Microbiological and endotoxin contamination involving single and multiple dose products, medical devices, and biofilms Contamination from sterilization procedures, residuals from radiation sterilization, ionizing radiation on packaging materials and medical devices Medicinal gases and volatile anesthetics Biopharmaceuticals including recombinant DNA technology products Extractables and leachables from containers made of glass, plastics, and metal Each section of the book contains information on what contaminants could be expected in a particular product, and how they were generated and reached that product. With up-to-date regulatory guidelines for determining contamination, as well as methods for assessing, quantifying, avoiding and removing contaminants, Sources of Contamination in Medicinal Products and Medical Devices is essential to fully understanding the specific threats that undermine the safety of medicines and medical devices.

Book excerpt: Lists and definitions of the most common pathologies likely to be encountered during specific procedures helps you understand the whole patient and produce radiographs that will make diagnosis easier for the physician.Labeled radiographs identify key radiographic anatomy and landmarks to help you determine if you have captured the correct diagnostic information on your images. "Evaluation Criteria" for each projection provide standards for evaluating the quality of each radiograph and help you produce the highest quality images."Clinical Indications" sections explain why a projection is needed or what pathology is demonstrated to give you a better understanding of the reasoning behind each projection. Increased emphasis on digital radiography keeps you up to date with the most recent advances in technology.Completely updated content offers expanded coverage of important concepts such as, digital imaging systems, updated CT information and AART exam requirements. More CT procedures with related sectional images, especially for areas such as skull and facial bones, reflect the shift in the field from conventional radiography to CT.Updated art visually demonstrates the latest concepts and procedures with approximately 500 new positioning photos and 150 updated radiographic images. Additional critique images provide valuable experience analyzing images to prepare you to evaluate your own images in the practice environment.Updated "Technique" and "Dose" boxes reflect the higher kV now recommended for computed and digital radiography."Imaging Wisely" program information from ASRT provides protocols to minimize radiation exposure during digital procedures. The latest standards for computed radiography and digital radiography (CR/DR) from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine ensures you are current with today s procedures and modalities."

Book Bone Cements

    Book Details:
  • Author : Klaus-Dieter Kühn
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642597629
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Bone Cements written by Klaus-Dieter Kühn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is the basic component of bone cements. To use it, a dough is prepared from the liquid and powder by mixing right before application, which is normally done by the operating team. During its working phase the dough is then inserted into the tissue where polymerization is completed. Thus, the final implant polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is only created at the implantation site. Besides methyl methacrylate, bone cements sometimes contain other methacrylates, such as butyl methacrylate. To achieve X-ray opacity, radiopacifiers (zirconium dioxide or barium sulfate) are added to the powder. Both the liquid and powder components contain additives (initiator and activator) that launch polymerization and control the set ting when mixed together. Moreover, softener and emulsifiers are some times used. The addition of antibiotics to the powder component in order to prevent or treat infections has become especially important. Commercial bone cements differ in composition and the course of curing. Some are designed for high and others for low viscosity. The way the user handles and applies the cement always crucially influences the quality of the implant. This is why clear and comprehensive information about the cements should be available to show the user how all the relevant factors work It should also be possible together and how they depend on each other.

Book Indirect Food Additives and Polymers

Download or read book Indirect Food Additives and Polymers written by Victor O. Sheftel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-03-30 with total page 1324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now, more than ever, foods come packaged in containers designed for direct cooking or heating, which often causes the movement of substances - indirect additives - into foods. Because of their unique characteristics, plastics or polymeric materials (PM) have become the most important packaging material for food products. The safety assessment of plastics intended for use in contact with foodstuffs or drinking water continues to present a serious challenge. Indirect Food Additives and Polymers: Migration and Toxicology studies the potential hazards of indirect additives for human health and develops recommendations for their safe manufacture and use. It contains an impressive review of basic regulatory, toxicological, and other scientific information necessary to identify, characterize, measure, and predict the hazards of nearly 2,000 plastic-like materials employed in packaging. The author presents the data underlying federal regulations - previously unavailable a single volume. The entry for each chemical provides: Prime Name Molecular or Structural Formula Molecular Mass Synonyms CAS Number RTECS number Properties Application and Exposure Migration Data Acute Toxicity Repeated Exposure Short-Term Toxicity Long-Term Toxicity Immunotoxicity of Allergenic Effect Reproductive Toxicity Mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Chemobiokinetics Standards Guidelines Regulations Recommendations References International in scope, the Handbook of Indirect Polymeric Additives in Food and Water: Migration and Toxicology offers comprehensive data on the toxic effects of polymeric materials and their ingredients. You will find the most information on plastics and polymeric materials- their migration and toxicology - in this resource.
