Book excerpt: "After framing the genre in this way, Dr. Lowney's book raises the essential question, conversion to what? The faith preached on talk shows is based on the principles of the Recovery Movement, among whose tenets are that care for one's self is the highest virtue and that psychological wounds that endure from childhood into adulthood create troublesome and addictive behaviors or "codependency." The only "cure" is to join a therapeutic 12-step group."--BOOK JACKET. "Baring Our Souls probes the roots of the genre in the religion of recovery, and holds both up to the scrutiny of sociological inquiry. This will be a welcome supplementary text in courses in social problems, media, and civil religion."--BOOK JACKET.

It is a time of raw emotion, and intense pain, but for the author this was combined with an unyielding feeling that there was a story to be told. This is the true story of a life unfolding, of events coming together in the most unlikely ways, and an increasing awareness of God in everyday life. The situations encountered - illness, redundancy, a new career and a tragic bereavement, light the way of a spiritual path and invite readers to consider their own spiritual journey. The disappointments, the insights and the grief are shared with readers in a compelling book which, written from the heart offers hope and inspiration to anyone facing the challenges of life.

Book excerpt: People People Who They Are. Why They Win. How To Be One. If you’ve ever heard of someone described as “a real people person” and agreed, you no doubt immediately thought “Boy, we could use more people like that!” And you’d be right. There are truths that are universally acknowledged: a people person will smoothly, successfully engage in effective, pleasant human interactions. They are more likely to be promoted, respected, admired, complimented and appreciated than those who simply do not know how to thrive among humans. Simply put, everyone could benefit from being a people person, but many just don’t know how or don’t know where to find the answers. Supported by interviews, case studies and sound research, People People will teach why being a people person even matters, what makes a people person, and how and where to be a people person. Scott Christopher is a nationally recognized author, speaker and corporate trainer. As co-author of the bestseller The Levity Effect: Why It Pays to Lighten Up, he has appeared on NBC’s Today Show, CNBC, Fox News and in the New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, The Economist, ESPN the Magazine, Ladies Home Journal and many others. He lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

It was the never forgotten absence who took me out of the lethargy of absent words, who reminded me that the heart can love without forgetting whims of youth. More than a decade has passed since I was absent from myself, I lost myself among other people's verses forgetting those that I had stored in my soul. Today, after regaining the momentum of living, I resumed this journey of prose with meaning. To summarize, without giving up my soul, I invite you to navigate over each letter of this love book. If you are there, hiding your crowded feelings, your lost truth, do not be afraid to bare your soul. Come and live each of these poems as if they were yours.

Book excerpt: Bible teacher and author Greg Hinnant is noted for his passionate and precise handling of the Scriptures. In ColossianNotes, as in his other Bible commentaries, he meticulously brings to light the layers of eternal truth found in Paul’s letter to the Christians at Colosse. Many of the apostle’s themes are of critical importance today. Paul deeply loved the Colossians and implored them to stand fast against the encroachment of prevailing heresies that threatened the purity of their faith. He urged them to focus on the preeminence of Christ and, above all worldly issues, hold the hope of heaven in their hearts and minds. An excellent companion to the biblical text, this commentary will not only broaden your understanding of Paul’s epistle but also reveal its surprising relevance to Christians’ lives today. Pastors, teachers, and students will find this a very valuable and useful resource.

Download or read book Custodians of the Hummingbird written by Al Kent and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Custodians of the Hummingbird By Al Kent Al Kent was born Albert Prentis Hamilton on December 8, 1939. As a singer, Kent’s proudest moment was in the summer of 1955. Al and his brother, Bobby Recco Hamilton, went to New York City and, through a series of auditions, Al Kent made the final cut to a Broadway play. According to estimates, a group of about one hundred were involved and participated in the process of eliminations. At the end of the day only seven were standing. Al became the protagonist. Other cherished memories include Al recording most of Jackie Wilson’s hit records before Jackie did. The songs were “Lonely Teardrops,” “That’s Why,” and “Am I the Man.” Al did his craft in a grand style and has sung since he was twelve. He began around Detroit and recorded for the Checker record label, a subsidiary of Chess Records in Chicago. Al wrote songs for many established artists, including Spanky Wilson, Reflections, Jackie Wilson, Fantastic Four, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Royal Jokers, Edwin Starr, J. J. Barnes, Ronnie McNair, Four Tops, David and Jimmy Ruffin, the Detroit Emeralds, Freddy Gorman, Gloria Taylor, the Flaming Embers, the Supremes, the Debonaires, San Remo’s Golden Strings and for himself. His greatest asset is undoubtedly his ability to listen intently to other’s ideals. His biggest dream is to direct a major movie for the big screen.
