Book Morphology of Baridinae and Related Groups Coleoptera Curculionidae

Download or read book Morphology of Baridinae and Related Groups Coleoptera Curculionidae written by Steven R. Davis and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the first comprehensive review of baridine morphology to date and attempts to present this morphological diversity in a comparative framework by including comparisons of other weevil subfamilies thought to be more closely related. Although this is by no means an exhaustive treatment, it is in hope that this study provides a better understanding of the evolution of this large radiation and the similarities and differences that comprise this group and outline its boundaries. By including over 1000 figures, it was a desire to cover as much of the morphological variation within Baridinae as possible, however, much remains that is not included here. This treatment is being presented in advance of a cladistic analysis of the subfamily based on morphology, thus much of this review pertains to describing structures worthy of inclusion in phylogenetic studies.

Book Arthropods of Tropical Forests

Download or read book Arthropods of Tropical Forests written by Yves Basset and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-23 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthropods are the most diverse group of organisms on our planet and the tropical rainforests represent the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. This book, written by 79 authors contributing to 35 chapters, aims to provide an overview of data collected during recent studies in Australia, Africa, Asia, and South America. The book focuses on the distribution of arthropods and their use of resources in the rainforest canopies, providing a basis for comparison between the forest ecosystems of the main biogeographical regions. Topics covered include the distribution of arthropods along vertical gradients and the relationship between the soil/litter habitat and the forest canopy. The temporal dynamics of arthropod communities, habitats and food selection are examined within and among tropical tree crowns, as are the effects of forest disturbance. This important book is a valuable addition to the literature used by community ecologists, conservation biologists entomologists, botanists and forestry experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One of the thoroughly revised and updated guide to the study of biodiversity in insects The second edition of Insect Biodiversity: Science and Society brings together in one comprehensive text contributions from leading scientific experts to assess the influence insects have on humankind and the earth’s fragile ecosystems. Revised and updated, this new edition includes information on the number of substantial changes to entomology and the study of biodiversity. It includes current research on insect groups, classification, regional diversity, and a wide range of concepts and developing methodologies. The authors examine why insect biodiversity matters and how the rapid evolution of insects is affecting us all. This book explores the wide variety of insect species and their evolutionary relationships. Case studies offer assessments on how insect biodiversity can help meet the needs of a rapidly expanding human population, and also examine the consequences that an increased loss of insect species will have on the world. This important text: Explores the rapidly increasing influence on systematics of genomics and next-generation sequencing Includes developments in the use of DNA barcoding in insect systematics and in the broader study of insect biodiversity, including the detection of cryptic species Discusses the advances in information science that influence the increased capability to gather, manipulate, and analyze biodiversity information Comprises scholarly contributions from leading scientists in the field Insect Biodiversity: Science and Society highlights the rapid growth of insect biodiversity research and includes an expanded treatment of the topic that addresses the major insect groups, the zoogeographic regions of biodiversity, and the scope of systematics approaches for handling biodiversity data.

Download or read book Australian Weevils Coleoptera Curculionoidea II written by EC Zimmerman and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1994-06-01 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the remainder of the primitive weevils (Division Orthoceri), namely the families Brentidae, Eurhynchidae and Apionidae. It catalogues 43 genera and 173 species and features almost 2000 individual drawings and black-and-white photographs. These illustrations are augmented by 270 full-colour habitus photographs in Volumes V and VI. The volume also includes an important chapter on the Immature Stages of Australian Curculionoidea by Brenda May, New Zealand, which describes the larval and pupal stages of 158 species of Australian weevils and features overviews of larval characters and their nomenclature as well as of rearing and preservation techniques applicable to weevil larvae. More than half the drawings in the volume accompany this chapter.

Book Systematics and Phylogeny of Weevils

Download or read book Systematics and Phylogeny of Weevils written by Rolf Oberprieler and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue on the Systematics and Phylogeny of Weevils presents 31 new research papers on one of the most diverse and successful groups of animals on Earth, the beetle superfamily Curculionoidea. It was in part inspired to commemorate the extraordinary life and scientific achievements of Guillermo (“Willy”) Kuschel (1918–2017), who shaped this field of science over the last century like no other weevil systematist. The papers in this memorial issue span weevil faunas from all over the globe, including South and Central America, Africa, Europe and the Near East, South-East Asia, New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand. They include major advances on the phylogeny and classification of the “broad-nosed” weevils (Entiminae), on the weevils associated with American cycads and on the unique extinct weevil fauna preserved in the 100-million-year-old Burmese amber, when weevils started to diversify alongside the oldest angiosperm plants. They comprise a tribute to Willy Kuschel, the proceedings of a weevil symposium held in his honor in 2016 in Orlando, Florida, 24 systematic studies (including seven phylogenetic analyses) and five other contributions on the diversity, biology, distribution, evolution and fossil history of weevils. In the papers collated in this volume, 30 new genera and 92 new species of weevils are described and a new family of extinct weevils is recognized.

Book Insects and Other Arthropods of Tropical America

Download or read book Insects and Other Arthropods of Tropical America written by Paul E. Hanson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visitors to tropical forests generally come to see the birds, mammals, and plants. Aside from butterflies, however, insects usually do not make it on the list of things to see. This is a shame. Insects are everywhere, they are often as beautiful as the showiest of birds, and they have a fascinating natural history. With their beautifully illustrated guide to insects and other arthropods, Paul E. Hanson and Kenji Nishida put the focus on readily observable insects that one encounters while strolling through a tropical forest in the Americas. It is a general belief that insects in the tropics are larger and more colorful than insects in temperate regions, but this simply reflects a greater diversity of nearly all types of insects in the tropics. On a single rainforest tree, for example, you will find more species of ant than in all of England. Though written for those who have no prior knowledge of insects, this book should also prove useful to those who study them. In addition to descriptions of the principal insect families, the reader will find a wealth of biological information that serves as an introduction to the natural history of insects and related classes. Sidebars on insect behavior and ecological factors enhance the descriptive accounts. Kenji Nishida’s stunning photographs—many of which show insects in action in their natural settings—add appeal to every page. A final chapter provides a glimpse into the intriguing world of spiders, scorpions, crabs, and other arthropods.
