Book Postfeminism and Health

Download or read book Postfeminism and Health written by Sarah Riley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 BPS Book Award: Academic Text category, this groundbreaking book employs a transdisciplinary and poststructuralist methodology to develop the concept of ‘postfeminist healthism,’ a twenty-first-century understanding of women’s physical and mental health formed at the intersections of postfeminist sensibilities, neoliberal constructs of citizenship and the notion of health as an individual responsibility managed through consumption. Postfeminist healthism is used in this book to explore seven topics where postfeminist sensibility has the most impact on women’s health: self-help, weight, surgical technologies, sex, pregnancy, responsibilities for others’ health and pro-anorexia communities. The book explores the ways in which the desire to be normal and live a good life is tied to expectations of ‘normal-perfection’ circulated across interpersonal interactions, media representations and expert discourses. It diagnoses postfeminist healthism as unhealthy for both those women who participate in it and those whom it excludes and considers how more positive directions may emerge. By exploring the under-researched intersection of postfeminism and health studies, this book will be invaluable to researchers and students in psychology, gender and women’s studies, health research, media studies and sociology.

Book excerpt: It's easy to poke fun at the latest weight-loss scheme, but when you're struggling with a poor body image you're willing to try anything that promises results. Such was the case for Lisa Sargese when, at the age of twenty-three, she became one of the first in the United States to receive the adjustable gastric band as part of a 1988 experiment group. Unfortunately, the very thing she thought would solve her problems only made them worse. Frankly recounting her weight-loss surgeries and resulting complications, Losing 140 Pounds the Hard Way follows Lisa on her difficult journey to recovery-not to a certain weight, but rather to a holistic understanding and acceptance of her body that goes beyond dress sizes or gym hours. Both a memoir and a manual, this book will change the way you think about food, fitness, and yourself. Learn the art of affirmation, discover how to respond gently to your body's needs, and then watch how improving your emotional well-being helps your physical body, inside and out.

Book It Ain t Over till the Thin Lady Sings

Download or read book It Ain t Over till the Thin Lady Sings written by Michelle Ritchie and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2007-04-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sensitive, sympathetic book helps readers determine whether or not weight-loss surgery is right for them. Author Michelle Ritchie shares both her personal journey as a successful weight-loss surgery patient and her professional advice as an experienced weight-loss counselor. In sometimes funny, sometimes painful prose, she discusses her life before and after surgery and bluntly analyzes her own complicity in her obesity. As she describes her four-year battle to maintain her new, healthy weight, Ritchie emphasizes personal responsibility, reminding readers that surgery is not a quick-fix solution but a tool that works only as well as the choices patients make after the procedure. Also included are a detailed description of gastric bypass surgery; its pros and cons; tips for keeping weight off after surgery; daily food plans and sample shopping lists; information on cross-addictions; and a thoughtful discussion on intimacy and relationships after surgery.

Book But I Deserve This Chocolate

Download or read book But I Deserve This Chocolate written by Susan Albers and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us are really, really good at devising reasons to indulge in foods that derail our diets and healthy eating plans. Who among us hasn’t thought, “I had a stressful day, so I deserve this chocolate,” or, “Buttery popcorn would go so well with this movie!” When we view food as a reward, emotional eating can be difficult to overcome. Most fad diets tell you to “control” your eating, use willpower, ignore your cravings, or just stop eating. Recall for a moment where this got you in the past. Feeling frustrated or hopeless? Maybe it led you to make more excuses? Perhaps you’re thinking I need to get control. This is a sign that the diet mentality may be deeply ingrained in you. Rest assured that there are alternatives to fad dieting and trying to “control” your body. In But I Deserve This Chocolate!, psychologist Susan Albers takes aim at the fifty most common self-sabotaging thoughts and excuses that keep you from eating right and looking great. This guide dismantles each excuse and offers a mindfulness exercise to help reroute your thoughts so you can meet your health goals. Whether you’re a man or woman, teen or adult, this book is for you if you are trying to eat more mindfully, manage your weight, lose weight, or take charge of your eating habits. Forget the chocolate and unwrap some truly nourishing habits you can feel good about—your body will thank you!

Book XL Love

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Varney
  • Publisher : Rodale
  • Release : 2014-08-19
  • ISBN : 1609614836
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book XL Love written by Sarah Varney and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With two out of every three Americans overweight or obese, it’s all hands on deck--scientists are studying how excess fat changes physical and mental health, demographers are calculating how it’s shortening life spans, and economists are debating the impact it has on America’s productivity and global competitiveness. But how weight affects intimacy and sexuality is barely discussed. Yet it’s a question of high importance for the tens of millions of Americans who are overweight or obese and having difficulty sexually and romantically. It is changing and complicating the mating game and married life alike; stunting the ability of young people to find happiness; and tipping some heavy, but otherwise happy, couples into divorce. For many, a larger body has meant a more troubled mind: a decline in sexual quality, an increase in self-loathing, and a tendency to let these factors stand in the way of love. In XL Love, Varney travels the country and tells the personal stories of men and women who are experiencing what millions of others feel every day, along with the stories of those who are in the business of helping them: physicians, researchers, scientists, psychologists, sociologists, and more. Analytic and immersive, personal and eye-opening, XL Love tackles the question: How is sex changing in America as the shape of Americans changes?

  • Author : Laura Backstrom
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2019-04-05
  • ISBN : 081359913X
  • Pages : 171 pages

Download or read book Weighty Problems written by Laura Backstrom and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many parents, teachers, and doctors believe that childhood obesity is a social problem that needs to be solved. Yet, missing from debates over what caused the rise in childhood obesity and how to fix it are the children themselves. By investigating how contemporary cultural discourses of childhood obesity are experienced by children, Laura Backstrom illustrates how deeply fat stigma is internalized during the early socialization experiences of children. Weighty Problems details processes of embodied inequality: how the children came to recognize inequalities related to their body size, how they explained the causes of those differences, how they responded to micro-level injustices in their lives, and how their participation in a weight loss program impacted their developing self-image. The book finds that embodied inequality is constructed and negotiated through a number of interactional processes including resocialization, stigma management, social comparisons, and attribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fat prejudice is exploding in American society, yet even social justice advocates tend to deny fat individuals protection because fat is seen as unhealthy and permanently changeable—concepts supported by a great deal of societal belief and very little scientific evidence. Using bell hooks' ideology of domination, Lonie McMichael explores the phenomena of fat prejudice—from inception to resistance—through a rhetorical lens. Looking at the actual experiences of fat people, she argues that fat prejudice is neither acceptable nor tolerable in our society. Publishers Weekly called Acceptable Prejudice? "a useful introduction to a burgeoning movement...will make readers question their attitudes about overweight people."
