Book Identity Diversity and Teaching for Social Justice

Download or read book Identity Diversity and Teaching for Social Justice written by Juliet Perumal and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent times, educational reformers have proposed ways of using education to reduce inequality, overcome discriminatory values and attitudes, and alleviate social problems. An increasing number of language theorists and practitioners contends that in order to reduce inequality it is essential to address the personal, cultural, and political implications of language teaching. Awareness of these factors activate the need to gain deeper insight into the personal and professional nuances of teachers' lives. The gap between sociolinguistic theory and educational practice points to the fact that linguists and educationists themselves carry the prejudices of particular social, ideological, cultural and geographical backgrounds. Who teaches what to whom, why and how affects curricular decisions which can thus become fraught with political allegiances; in this way the non-neutrality of language pedagogy is confirmed. Drawing from a suite of data sources the book explores the following questions: Do teachers' autobiographical experiences shape their professional identities? Does subscription to counter-hegemonic ideologies impact teachers' personal and professional positionality and authority? What contributions can feminist theorising make to language teaching in socially diverse classrooms? Through an exploration of these questions, the book gestures towards an imperative to re-think educative and pedagogic relationships and the politics of difference and dialogue in demographically diverse classrooms that subscribe to social redress agendas.

Book excerpt: Does David Still Play Before You? explores the ways that contemporary Israeli poets have made use of images from the Bible in their poetry. Through close readings of fifty poems, featured in their original Hebrew and in English translation, David Jacobson studies how Israeli poets respond to and incorporate the Bible in their work and reflect on the presence of the Bible in contemporary Israeli culture. The book provides a stunning collection of powerful and moving voices. Jacobson organizes the works according to subjects that recur with great frequency in Israeli poetry based on the Bible: the Arab-Israel conflict, responses to the Holocaust, relations between men and women, and modern challenges to traditional religious faith. Jacobson's literary analysis is informed by an astute awareness of the role of the Bible in Israeli culture. This volume is the first comprehensive study of the use of the Bible by Israeli poets, a phenomenon that is central to the development of Israeli poetry.

Download or read book Political Muslims written by Tahir Abbas and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, the media, academics, and the general public have put considerable focus on Muslim culture and politics around the world. Specifically, the rising population of young Muslims has generated concerns about religious radicalism, Islamism, and conflicts in multicultural societies. However, few studies have been devoted to how a new generation of Muslims is reshaping society in positive ways. In Political Muslims, Abbas and Hamid provide a new perspective on Muslim youth, presenting them as agents of creative social change and as active participants in cultural and community organizations where resistance leads to negotiated change. In a series of case studies that cross the globe, contributors capture the experiences of being young and Muslim in ten countries—the United States, Canada, Britain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, and Indonesia. They examine urban youth from various socioeconomic backgrounds, addressing issues that range from hybrid identities and student activism to the strategic use of music and social media. With diverse disciplinary and methodological approaches, Political Muslims gives readers a nuanced and authentic understanding of the everyday social, economic, and political realities of young people.

Book In Quest of the Dates of the Vedas

Download or read book In Quest of the Dates of the Vedas written by Premendra Priyadarshi and published by Partridge. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dates of the four Vedas, as well as the homeland of the Indo-European-speaking people, have been two unresolved issues in the Indian history. This book uses the robust information recently emerging from archaeo-botanical studies, particularly palinology, as well as that originating from the researches in geology, archaeology, and genetics. The information generated from these scientific studies provides a vivid picture of the last ten thousand years of Europe and Asia. This picture has been matched against the information about the plants, animals, and climate contained in the four Vedic Samhitas, as well as that emerging from the philological studies. The final picture emerges that the Rig-Veda was composed between 8000 BC and 6000 BC, Sama-Veda between 6000 BC and 5500 BC, Yajur-Veda between 5500 BC and 2500 BC, or perhaps 2000 BC, and the Atharva-Veda between 1500BC and 1300 BC. The investigation also reveals that the Indo-European words for "lion" "kesari" "singh" "camel" "ustra" "ostrich" "opium" "lotus" etc. characteristically Indian animals and plants, have existed in the Indo-European vocabulary, although not noticed so far. That exercise fixes the location of the Indo-European homeland in Northwest India at about 10,000-8,000 BC.
