Book Drohobycz Drohobycz and Other Stories

Download or read book Drohobycz Drohobycz and Other Stories written by Henryk Grynberg and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-10-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Drohobycz, Drohobycz, one of our most highly regarded Polish writers, Henryk Grynberg, delivers thirteen authentic tales of the Holocaust, including the riveting title story, which reconstructs the assassination of the celebrated writer and artist Bruno Schulz. In each of these stories, it is not only the devastation of the Holocaust that resonates so clearly, but also the trauma that endures among its victims and survivors today. Going beyond the age-old question of individual crime and punishment, Drohobycz, Drohobycz explores the concepts of collective guilt and the impunity of the twentieth century's two most genocidal political systems: Nazi Germany and the Stalinist Soviet Union. With its profound investigation of bravery, baseness, and the vulnerability of human beings, this incredible collection is a critically acclaimed and highly anticipated contribution to contemporary fiction.

An American woman who’s betrayed her brother only to lose him to a Taliban bullet comes face to face with her demons during a vacation in Morocco. A famed photojournalist must find a way to bring her life’s work to closure before she goes blind, a quest that changes her understanding of the very physics of light. By turns innocent and canny, the characters of Night in Erg Chebbi and Other Stories must learn to improvise—quickly—when confronted with stark choices they never dreamed they’d have to make. Lyrical, immaculately constructed and deeply felt, these nine stories take us far beyond our comfort zones and deep into the wilds of the human heart.

Book When Canadian Literature Moved to New York

Download or read book When Canadian Literature Moved to New York written by Nicholas James Mount and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian literature was born in New York City. It began not in the backwoods of Ontario or the salt flats of New Brunswick, but in the cafés, publishing offices, and boarding houses of late nineteenth-century New York, where writing developed as a profession and where the groundwork for the Canadian canon was laid. So argues Nick Mount in When Canadian Literature Moved to New York. The last decades of the nineteenth century saw an extraordinary exodus from English Canada, draining the country of half its writers and all but a few of its contemporary and future literary celebrities. Motivated by powerful obstacles to a domestic literature, most of these migrants landed in New York - by the 1890s the centre of the continental literary market - and found for the first time a large, receptive literary market and recognition from non-Canadian publishers and reviewers. While the expatriates of the 1880s and 1890s - including Bliss Carman, Ernest Thompson Seton, and Palmer Cox - were recognized for their achievements in Canada, the domestic literature they themselves spurred into existence rekindled a nationalist imperative to distinguish Canadian writing from other literatures, especially American, and this slowly eliminated most of their work from the emerging English Canadian canon. When Canadian Literature Moved to New York is the story of these expatriate writers: who they were, why they left, what they achieved, and how they changed Canadian literary history.
