Book Greeks and Barbarians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greeks and Barbarians Classic Reprint written by James Alexander Kerr Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greeks and Barbarians There have been many explanations of ancient Greece and its peculiar spirit. If I may say so, the only original thing about the explanation offered in this book is its want of originality; for it is the explanation of the Greeks themselves. They believed that Hellenism was born of the con ict between the Greeks and the Barbarians. As Thucydides puts it (i. Greek and Barbarian are correlative terms and Herodotus wrote his great book, seek ing, as he says, digressions of set purpose, to illustrate just that. About such an explanation there is obviously nothing startling at all. It is indeed (at first sight) so colourless and negative, that it must be dissatisfaction with it which has provoked all the other explanations. Scholars must have said to themselves, What is the use of repeat ing that Hellenism is the opposite of Barbarism? We know that already. But they knew it only in a formal or abstract way. It is but the other day that classical scholars have begun to study the Barbarian and to work out the contrast which alone can give us the material for a rich understanding of the Greek himself. Without this study one's ideas of the Greek could not fail to be somewhat empty and colourless. But any one who cares to read even the meagre outline which these essays supply will hardly complain that there is a lack of colour. The subject indeed is so vast that one is compelled to be selective and illustrative. Even to be this is far from easy. For instance, it seems extraordinary to write upon the meaning of Hellenism without a chapter on Greek art. Such a chapter, however, is excluded by the design of this book, which must dispense with illustrations whereas in dealing with literature I could always drive home my point by simple quotation. Then again it may appear a little old-fashioned and arbitrary that I confine myself to the centuries before Alexander. But after all it was, in these centuries that Hellenism rose into its most characteristic form - and in any case a man must stop somewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trail of the Barbarians: Being "L'outrage Des Barbares" But, in spite of lack of leisure, I will quarrel With the Master as to his employment of one word: the word irreparable. I have seen ruined France - such of it as is ruined - and have seen on the Somme the mole-work that is demanded of the foot-slogger, and, probably because the mole can see what is going on below ground better than he who passes beneath the rose and grey skies of a French spring, I am more sure than Mr. Loti that the grass is already moving that shall cover the graveyards and the rusty heaps of recovered provinces. Book Confessions of a Barbarian Classic Reprint

Download or read book Confessions of a Barbarian Classic Reprint written by George Sylvester Viereck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confessions of a Barbarian This book reveals America to herself by interpreting Europe. I stand in symbolic relation, so to speak, to both hemispheres. My twofold racial consciousness serving as a fulcrum, I am enabled to pry two worlds - Archimedes aspired to lift but one - out of the furrow of their mutual misconception. I have seen the soul of the subtle siren Europe. I have chronicled facts from her unwritten history, from the secret pages of diplomatic portfolios. From her have I also learned verities greater than facts. I may speak ex cathedra: infallibility I claim not. I have emulated not the labored minuteness of old school painters who, numbering each hair of the head, make themselves rivals of God, but the thumbnail sketches of Whistler and the chromatic riots of Boecklin. My book, though published serially in William Marion Reedy's brave weekly. The Mirror, is journalism only in the sense in which that term may also be applied to the Reisebilder of Heine. Book The Dynasty of Theodosius

Download or read book The Dynasty of Theodosius written by Thomas Hodgkin and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynasty of Theodosius: Or Eighty Years Struggle With the Barbarians This little book owes its existence to an invitation addressed to me by the Durham Ladies' Educational Association to deliver to them a short course of historical lectures. Being allowed to choose my own subject, I naturally chose that with which I was most familiar, the epoch of the fall of the Western Empire: but in order to prevent my very familiarity with that period from leading me into diffuseness, I took the precaution of writing the lectures, and thus, I believe, was preserved from in any case over-passing the prescribed limit of an hour and a quarter. When my course was completed, I found that I had described in brief outline so many of the leading events recorded in the first two volumes of my book, Italy and her Invaders, that it seemed worth while to offer the result of my labours to those who might not care to peruse the larger work. In order to give a little more completeness to the book, I added a lecture (the Second) on the political and social condition of the Romans and barbarians, which was not included in the original course. Book Barbarian and Noble Classic Reprint

Download or read book Barbarian and Noble Classic Reprint written by Marion Florence Lansing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Barbarian and Noble History has no period which makes a more vivid appeal to the young reader than the thousand years which we call the Middle Ages. The mediaeval world is just such a world as he would like to live in, where knights ride off on crusades, and kings wander out from their palaces in disguise, where heroes sail away to explore unknown seas, and gay cavaliers sally forth to tournament and joust. It requires no effort to interest boys and girls in this part of history. They turn to it with the enthusiasm with which they seize fairy tales and legends of chivalry and romance, and find in its reality a satisfying response to the desire for a true story. The child's interest being assured, the problem is to make this interest of use in the process of his education. The purpose of this series is to relate this fascinating and heroic past to the present by telling the stories from the point of view of the contribution of the Middle Ages to the world of to-day. The heroes gain a new importance and the stories a new meaning by this treatment. Who the "mediaeval builders" were may be seen by the titles of the following books which make up the series: "Barbarian and Noble," "Patriots and Tyrants," "Sea Kings and Explorers," "Kings and Common Folk," "Cavalier and Courtier," "Craftsman and Artist." Book Ingomar the Barbarian

Download or read book Ingomar the Barbarian written by Maria Lovell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ingomar, the Barbarian: A Play in Five Acts Perhaps there is no question asked oftener than "Who wrote 'Ingomar'?" To the English-speaking public the name of Maria Lovell, whose adaptation into English is the best-known version of this picturesque and popular play, is familiar enough, but the name of its German author seems practically unknown. "Der Sohn der Wildniss," as "Ingomar" was known in the original, was written by Eligius Francis Joseph, Baron von Munch-Bellinghausen, who was known to the literary world under his nom de plume, Friedrich Halm. He was born at Cracow, then a part of the Austrian dominion, in 1806, and his father held high office at court, being finally Counsellor of State under the Emperor Francis II. "Der Sohn der Wildniss" was not its author's first work, but had been preceded by half a dozen successes; it is, however, his best-known play, and has been done into Danish as well as English, and succeeded in Copenhagen as well as it did in Vienna, in London, and all over America. It was written in 1842, and the first English version of it was not the one which is so familiar to us today, but was a straight translation, made by William Henry Charlton, and called "The Son of the Wilderness." This translation Halm highly complimented; but Maria Lovell's adaptation was the one first used in London, where it was produced at the Drury Lane Theatre, in June, 1851, by James Anderson, who had just become the manager of that theatre, and who was the original Ingomar, with Miss Vandenhoff as the first Parthenia. The play was a great success, but did not save Anderson from financial disaster. The first Ingomar died on March 3, 1895. The play had its first production in this country in December, 1851, being brought out simultaneously at the Bowery and Broadway Theatres. Download or read book The Barbarians of Morocco Classic Reprint written by Graf Sternberg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Barbarians of Morocco I accompanied Count Sternberg on this little journey to Fez, not for the purpose of wringing concessions from the Sultan, but to learn something of the people and the country. To speak with authority and true understanding of Morocco and its people requires sympathy and a life long residence amongst them. Although we cannot claim to have lived amongst the Moors for more than a few months, we started on our journey in a sympathetic mood, and returned with still more sympathy for these misunderstood people. To say that we thoroughly understood the Moorish character would be to adopt a presumptuous attitude. Tourists flock to Tangier, and, after a conversation with a low-caste guide and a donkey-ride on the sands, take boat to England or America, and speak with the authority of ignorance on Morocco and its mysteries.
