Download or read book A Dumping Ground written by Thom Blake and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cherbourg settlement was a home to many. But it was never the haven the Queensland government intended. By the end of the 19th century, at the height of Queensland's Aboriginal protectionist-policy practice, the idea of establishing two government-controlled Aboriginal reserves at either end of the state was nearing realisation. The reserve established in Queensland's south began as Barambah in 1901 and was later renamed Cherbourg. Variously described as bold, well meaning and misguided, it was a social experiment in institutional control that was to impact on the lives of thousands of Aboriginal families in ways that continue to this day.In this revealing, first-ever publication on Cherbourg Settlement's history 1900-1940, Thom Blake adds the vital dimension of interviews with former residents. Supported by maps, archival documents and letters, this book illustrates an Aboriginal reserve's evolution under government practice. It also explores the dynamics of cultural resilience through the generations.

Download or read book Aboriginal Pathways written by John Gladstone Steele and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first European chroniclers of Indigenous Culture in Australia looked for the sensational, often neglecting its more significant features. In his fourth book on Queensland’s early history, J. G. Steele corrects this imbalance with a detailed account of the Indigenous people of the subtropical coast at the time of their earliest contact with white settlers. The region described is centred on Brisbane, extending along the coast to Fraser Island, to Evens Head in New South Wales, and inland to the Great Dividing Range. Drawing on early accounts, photographs, place-names, languages, legends, archeology, and museum collections, Aboriginal Pathways provides a wealth of fascinating and important material, much of it relevant to debates on Indigenous land rights and sacred sites of the 1980s.
Download or read book Oceanographic Processes of Coral Reefs written by Eric Wolanski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades since publication of the first edition, substantial advancements have been made in the science, the need for transdisciplinary approaches to coral reef protection greater than ever before. This new edition, now in full color throughout with accompanying animations, goes beyond identifying foundational information and current problems to pinpoint science-based solutions for managers, stakeholders and policy makers. Coral reefs are connected by currents that carry plankton and the larvae of many reef-based organisms. Further, they supply food to reefs. Currents also bring pollutants from the land and, together with the atmosphere, affect the surrounding ocean. The chapters in this book provide a much-needed review of the biophysics of reefs with an emphasis on the Great Barrier Reef as an ecosystem. The focus is on interactions between currents, waves, sediment and the dynamics of coastal and reef-based ecosystems. The topographic complexity of reefs redirects mainstream currents, creates tidal eddies, mushroom jets, boundary layers, stagnation zones, and this turbulence is enhanced by the oceanographic chaos in the adjoining Coral Sea. This is the environment in which particles and organisms, of a range of sizes live, from tiny plankton to megafauna. This generates faunal connectivity at scales of meters to thousands of km within the Great Barrier Reef and with the adjoining ocean. Pollution from land-use is increasing and remedial measures are described both on land and on coral cays. The impact of climate change is quantified in case studies about mangroves and corals. Modelling this biophysical complexity is increasing in sophistication, and the authors suggest how the field can advance further.
