Book Drinking with Men

Download or read book Drinking with Men written by Rosie Schaap and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NPR “Best Books of 2013” BookPage Best Books of 2013 Library Journal Best Books of 2013: Memoir Flavorwire 10 Best Nonfiction Books of 2013 A vivid, funny, and poignant memoir that celebrates the distinct lure of the camaraderie and community one finds drinking in bars. Rosie Schaap has always loved bars: the wood and brass and jukeboxes, the knowing bartenders, and especially the sometimes surprising but always comforting company of regulars. Starting with her misspent youth in the bar car of a regional railroad, where at fifteen she told commuters’ fortunes in exchange for beer, and continuing today as she slings cocktails at a neighborhood joint in Brooklyn, Schaap has learned her way around both sides of a bar and come to realize how powerful the fellowship among regular patrons can be. In Drinking with Men, Schaap shares her unending quest for the perfect local haunt, which takes her from a dive outside Los Angeles to a Dublin pub full of poets, and from small-town New England taverns to a character-filled bar in Manhattan’s TriBeCa. Drinking alongside artists and expats, ironworkers and soccer fanatics, she finds these places offer a safe haven, a respite, and a place to feel most like herself. In rich, colorful prose, Schaap brings to life these seedy, warm, and wonderful rooms. Drinking with Men is a love letter to the bars, pubs, and taverns that have been Schaap’s refuge, and a celebration of the uniquely civilizing source of community that is bar culture at its best.

Book Season of Flowers and Dust

Download or read book Season of Flowers and Dust written by Gregg Mosson and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Season of Flowers and Dust explores through poetry a seasonal cycle of fall, winter, and spring in the Pacific Northwest. The close observations found here in fall and spring poems and winter sonnets offer readers a strong engagement with the natural world.¿A tango of heart-stringsthrows an awning of notesbetween them and the night.Matt imagines he should go to river¿s edge, and dance, and watch.¿ ¿from ¿Descent Into Light¿¿Not since the writings of Robert Hass and Barbara Hurd has there been a poet who so tributes the natural world in poetry. Gregg Mosson follows the strange stars of our seasons with the attention of a birdwatcher and passion of a lover. His human responses create a brilliant tapestry of snow, sky, and leaf, detailed like an article of faith. Reverence to nature is as ancient as time, but what remains is the poet who touches this territory the way the wind sings our language.¿¿Grace CavalieriPoet and producer of ¿The Poet and the Poem from the Library of Congress¿ "Gregg Mosson¿s Season of Flowers and Dust carries me into a universal season, one with subtle sensuality and the veiled love and violence which life holds. These poems have just the right blend of spirit, light, darkness, and as Marianne Moore would say, `Real toads in imaginary gardens.¿ ¿¿Carol FranksPortland State University

Book excerpt: Glen Larum's first novel, Waltz Against the Sky, explores the fates awaiting four young men who leave home behind for various reasons and venture out into the world. Evan Blaine, an out-of-work newspaper editor who has fumbled through this more than once before, finds himself seizing another chance; Dink Downs, who has lost his first regular job on a Florida road crew, gets swept along by his older brother, Del, an ex-con who has agreed to drive across country to deliver an automobile for a former cellmate; and teen-ager Tony Angione is hitch-hiking from New Jersey to California to see if he can find himself, employment, and a future with an uncle who may be more myth than the building contractor who can answer his prayers. The paths of these four - Blaine, the Downs brothers, and Angione - are all destined to converge in West Texas, where they bump up against the people whom strangers are most likely to encounter in a strange place, and regional law enforcement officials like Sheriff Leo Blunt and his deputies, who are used to administering justice in their own way. As Waltz begins, Sheriff Blunt's world is turned upside down by an uncommon crime, a breakout from an unlocked jail and events spiral out of control from that moment. A flashback layering technique featuring varying viewpoints carries the reader along as the characters reach their appointments with destiny. While many of the encounters with the ordinary population, particularly Blaine's and Angione's, seem to affirm a basic goodness in people, there is an underlying tension that plays out to an unexpected end. Told in a laconic western voice, the story uses distinctive narrative variation to weave different perspectives of past and present into plainsong about ordinary people dancing with fate, yet rarely recognizing their partner. The novel makes a powerful case that while randomness calls the tune in life, it is the moral ambiguity of people in power that provides the background sheet music. The only question is, will anyone waltz away?

    Book Details:
  • Author : Moira Egan
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2017

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Syn sthesium written by Moira Egan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synæsthesium is an unusual exploration of ekphrasis--poetry that takes a real or imagined work of art as its muse. The first half of the book, Olfactorium, is inspired by various fragrances and the olfactory flashbacks--real or imagined--induced by them. From everyday Old Spice to exotic Casbah, the poems take the reader on journeys peppered with the luscious language of perfumery. The second part, Love and Work, is based on the works of Suzanne Valadon, the bold and unconventional model-turned-artist, peer and probable lover of Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and other painters. The poetic forms--sonnets, syllabics, a villanelle, a rondeau--reflect the content of the paintings and drawings of this great and under-appreciated artist.

You sing along with the band and try not to get kicked. Another fun night. You just don't have clean teeth. Imagine how good that cool floor feels, and how nice the jazz trio sounds, "Oh, I know that one!" so you sing along. That's how you will feel about the poetry in this book! You will want to sing along. Bring your reading glasses and a nice snifter of your favorite spirits. Pour one for me, too.

Winner of the 2007 Anhinga Prize for Poetry. "Engaged by contemporary American life at every level, from the down-and-out to the urban sublime, the poems in Kenneth Hart's UH OH TIME have at their core a sensitive, lonely individual who has a marvelous way with words. Whether he is conversing with a Russian lap dancer, writing an ode to the diner, or analyzing a mayfly's husk on a shower curtain, the poet shows a genuine affection for his subjects -- an affection embodied in language that is always rich, complex, and various. His own name says it all. This is a poet with heart"--Mark Jarman, judge.
