This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baptist Home Missions in North America: Including a Full Report of the Proceedings and Addresses of the Jubilee Meeting, and a Historical Sketch of the American Baptist Home Mission Society, Historical Tables, Etc;, 1832-1882 Before going to press the historical sketch has received the careful attention Of a competent committee appointed by the Board. It would be remarkable if, in a volume containing thousands Of dates, names, and figures, no mistake whatever should occur, though great pains have been taken to secure accuracy. The author expresses his appreciation of the valuable services Of the Assistant Corresponding Secretary, W. IV. Bliss, Esq., and Of the kindness Of others who have placed at his disposal original material or otherwise aided in the preparation Of the work. This slight contribution to American Bap tist history, as related to the work of the Home Mission Society, is now sent forth with the hope on the part Of the Executive Board and their servant, the Corresponding Secretary, that it may awaken in the denomination a deeper and more intelligent interest in the evangeli zation Of this land, whose influence with every passing year becomes more potent in the world's affairs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing growth of Christianity in the global South over the course of the twentieth century has sparked an equally rapid growth in studies of ''World Christianity,'' which have dismantled the notion that Christianity is a Western religion. What, then, are we to make of the waves of Western missionaries who have, for centuries, been evangelizing in the global South? Were they merely, as many have argued, agents of imperialism out to impose Western values? In An Unpredictable Gospel, Jay Case examines the efforts of American evangelical missionaries in light of this new scholarship. He argues that if they were agents of imperialism, they were poor ones. Western missionaries had a dismal record of converting non-Westerners to Christianity. The ministries that were most successful were those that empowered the local population and adapted to local cultures. In fact, influence often flowed the other way, with missionaries serving as conduits for ideas that shaped American evangelicalism. Case traces these currents and sheds new light on the relationship between Western and non-Western Christianities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that freedmen's education was largely the work of privileged, single white northern women motivated by evangelical beliefs and abolitionism. Backed by pathbreaking research, Ronald E. Butchart's Schooling the Freed People shatters this notion. The most comprehensive quantitative study of the origins of black education in freedom ever undertaken, this definitive book on freedmen's teachers in the South is an outstanding contribution to social history and our understanding of African American education.
