Book The Baptist History of South Dakota

Download or read book The Baptist History of South Dakota written by T. M. Shanafelt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptist History of South Dakota This generation is living in a epoch of history making. The United States census of 1890 revealed facts respecting the material growth and development of this country to which there has been no parallel in the history of the world. Invention has multiplied many fold mans capacity and power for work. By the application of these inventions to the farm and to the factory, to commerce and to transportation, this growth has been made possible. When the second half of the century now drawing to a close began, the vast region known as the Mississippi valley was for the most part the hunting ground of the red man, and the home of the buffalo and the antelope. Under the industrious hand of the pioneer settler, the desert has been made to blossom as the rose. In 1850 the population of the twelve prairie states, including Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri, was 5,400,000; in 1890 it was 22,362,000. During this period of forty years, the virgin soil in these twelve states was changed into productive farms, at the rate of 13,000 acres per day. Two-thirds of the grain produced, and of the live stock raised, are found in these twelve states. Their development in manufacturing interests has not been less marvellous. In 1850 they reported 111,000 operatives earning $20,000,000 in wages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Historical Dictionary of the Baptists

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Baptists written by William H. Brackney and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptists are a major group of Christians with a worldwide presence. Originating in the English Puritan-Separatist tradition of the 17th century, Baptists proliferated in North America, and through missionary work from England, Europe, and North America, they have established churches, associations, unions, missions, and alliances in virtually every country. They are among the most highly motivated evangelists of the Christian gospel, employing at present in excess of 7,000 domestic and overseas missionaries. Important characteristics of the Baptists across their history are: the authority of the Scriptures, individual accountability before God, the priority of religious experience, religious liberty, separation of church and state, congregational independence, and a concern for the social implications of the gospel. Baptists recognize a twofold ministry (deacons and pastors) or a threefold order (deacons, elders, pastors). Historical Dictionary of the Baptists, Third Edition expands upon the second edition with an updated chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important events, doctrines, and the church founders, leaders, and other prominent figures who have made notable contributions.

Book A History of the Baptists

Download or read book A History of the Baptists written by Robert George Torbet and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history of the people called Baptists. Its purpose is to set forth once again a story which has been told in various forms many times, but which requires retelling and fresh interpretation for twentieth-century readers. This book is not intended to give an account of all the bodies which resemble the Baptists. It begins with a brief summary of the views held by the people called Baptists. It then provides a brief survey of those spiritual ancestors from whom the Baptists are immediately descended. While British and European Baptists have not been neglected, the main story concerns American Baptists, particularly those who are white, both Northern and Southern. - Preface.

Book The A to Z of the Baptists

Download or read book The A to Z of the Baptists written by William H. Brackney and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 110 million members worldwide, Baptists are surpassed only by Roman Catholic and Orthodox groups as the largest segment of Christians. The term 'Baptist' has its origins with the Anabaptists, the denomination historically linked to the English Separatist movement of the 16th century. Although Baptist churches are located throughout the world, the largest group of Baptists lives in the Southern United States, and the Baptist faith has historically exerted a powerful influence in that region of the country. The A to Z of the Baptists relates the history of the Baptist Church through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important events, doctrines, and the church founders, leaders, and other prominent figures who have made notable contributions. This volume commemorates the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Baptist movement in 1609.

To what extent did it threaten the political stability of the nation and encroach upon the existing Russian and German churches? On the Edge examines the efforts of the regimes to suppress the movement and how the movement not only survived but also expanded. To what extent did the movement bring upon itself unnecessary opposition because of aggressiveness and tactics? Albert Wardin describes the contributions the movement made to the religious life of Russia and examines its numerical success.

Book Denominational Higher Education during World War II

Download or read book Denominational Higher Education during World War II written by John J. Laukaitis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how World War II affected denominational colleges who faced a national crisis in relationship to their Christian tenets and particular religious communities and student bodies. With denominational positions ranging from justifying the war in light of the existential threat that the United States faced to maintaining long-held beliefs of nonviolence, the multitude of institutional positions taken during World War II speaks to the scope of religious diversity within Christian higher education and the central issues of faith and service to God and country. Ultimately, Laukitis provides a particular lens to analyze the history of higher education during World War II through an examination of denominational institutions. The relationship between higher education, faith, and war offers depth to understanding the role of denominational colleges in articulating theological interpretations of war and their sense of responsibility as Christian liberal arts institutions in the United States.
