Religious. Disputation, or cons. Troversial divinity [has been a rriatter of doubt with many. Some artfully decry it, inorder to avoid free enquiry; some'hate ir because they do not like to be against it, to save thema selves the disgrace of exposing'their ignorance, or the labor of examiningand defending their own the ses. There are others who avoid it, not because they'are convinced of the impropriety of the thing itself; but because of the evil, temper with which it is generally conducted. The propriety of it will however appear, if we consider that every article of religion is denied by some, and cannot well be be lieved by any, without examination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Baptism: Viewed in Its Relation to the Christian Life The view here presented of the design of Baptism is one which has deeply impressed the mind of the writer. The years that have passed away since it was given, at Cambridge, Septem ber 27, 1828, as an introductory discourse before the Boston As sociation of Baptist Churches, have served to make the impres sion yet more deep. The considerations then urged not only continue in all their force, appealing to the understanding and to the heart, but they have gathered strength from recent events. And from the circumstances by which we are now surrounded. Heaven grant that their appeal may not be in vain! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Baptism The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction, to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism, Its Subjects and Mode Scarcely ever hear the subject from our pulpits. There are hundreds of congrega tions in which the younger members never heard a sermon on Infant Baptism, and prob ably never more than a very hasty explana tion of our practice concerning the mode. The result is that, so far as such communities are educated at all on this subject, it is under other auspices than our own, and by no means friendly to our doctrines. I have thought that something of this character, in expensive and unpretentious, ought to be offered to those who lack time or disposition to study our more critical works; and with this view I send out these Discourses, be lieving they will measurably meet a real want, and contribute toward the removal of the more serious difficulties from the minds of.
