Book Baptism Peace and the State in the Reformed and Mennonite Traditions

Download or read book Baptism Peace and the State in the Reformed and Mennonite Traditions written by Alan P. F. Sell and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the most significant points at issue between the Reformed and Mennonite communions–Baptism, peace and church-state relations? Is there a way forward? In the hope that there may be, the contributors to this book attempt to clear the way to closer relations between Reformed and Mennonites by careful scholarly discussion of the traditionally disputed questions. The papers gathered here were presented at the second phase of the international dialogue between the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (Presbyterian and Congregational) and the Mennonite World Conference. There are Reformed and Mennonite studies of the topics, together with the responses of a philosopher of religions, a sociologist, a systematic theologian and a church historian. In the Introduction the dialogue is set in its historical and contemporary ecumenical context, and the Conclusion, drafted by the dialogue participants, has been forwarded to the two world bodies for their consideration and action. This important work will be relevant to all future scholarly research into the growing debate between Reformed and Mennonite communions.

Book II. c. xviii., says: I have written seven books on Baptism against the Donatists, who strive to defend themselves by the authority of the most blessed bishop and martyr Cyprian; in which I show that nothing is so effectual for the refutation of the Donatists, and for shutting their mouths directly from upholding their schism against the Catholic Church, as the letters and act of Cyprian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baptism: Its Nature, Obligation, Mode, Subjects, and Benefits Compassionate Author, and designed to unite mankind in the bonds of peace on earth, preparatory to com munion in heaven, why should we regard, with scrupu lous tenacity, mere difference in external rites and ceremonies as an insurmountable barrier to unity and fellowship on earth? Can we not be in spirit on earth what we shall be in heaven? Are not those principles which are sufficient to secure eternal salvation in heaven, sufficient to secure a catholic spirit and com munion of saints on earth? If we believe they are not, then let us never offer up a prayer again on the principle contained in the admirable form Of prayer prescribed by our Saviour - Thy will be done on earth, as it is done in heaven. Are not the same principles which were able to preserve the church in the bonds of peace and the unity of the Spirit, in the days of Christ and his apostles, sufficient to preserve the church in the same unity and communion, in all ages of time? What other means to protect, or what other chart to guide, do we need, in addition to those which the apostolic church possessed? Do not union, prosperity, and stability depend upon the same great fundamental principles and necessary things now, as then were required? We say necessary - from which man can no more take any part, and to which he can no more add any thing, than he can affect the necessary being of God himself. Book Enlightenment Ecumenism Evangel

Download or read book Enlightenment Ecumenism Evangel written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the Gospel, and how is it to be commended? This question encapsulates the running theme of this collection of papers. In five essays Professor Sell discusses some Puritans, Cambridge Platonists, Quakers, and critics of deism and pantheism who sought to articulate the Gospel in the intellectual environment in which they had been set. Their underlying concerns are of continuing relevance in current ecumenical discussion, as are questions of doctrinal change and development, the subjects of two further papers. A paper on spirituality echoes some of the concerns of the Separatists, Platonists, and Quakers, but views them in relation to the widespread interest in the topic at the present time. Two papers concern the ways in which the Gospel is shared in ecumenical circles, with special reference to the Holy Spirit, ecclesiology, and the Reformed contribution to interconfessional discussion. A bibliographical survey of Reformed theology in twentieth-century Britain shows the range of interest within one ecclesiastical tradition, while such wider issues as contextual theology, inclusivism, and the peril of sectarianism are discussed in a further paper. The book concludes with an attempt to answer the question, what is involved in proclaiming the Gospel of reconciliation today?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Christian Baptism The cause of the bible is the cause of God, and the only noble cause of men. The individual who contributes anything to the more wide diffusion of the light which is from heaven, among the inhabitants Of the earth, promotes that cause, ele vates the human character, and brings the world under Obligation to him as a benefactor at the same time he adds a note to the anthem once sung by angels Glory to God in the highest On earth peace; good will to ward men. In order to do this, it is not indispensable that new truth be discovered. The bible contains an entire and perfect theology; and to take of the things of Christ and show them to men, is enough. This the Christian may do, as the instrument Of the Holy Spirit. It is a no less noble or useful work to help a Chris tian brother to clearer and brighter light, than to reflect the light on the darkness Of unregenerated minds. The main design Of this book is, to communicate important truths to scholars already in the school of Christ. The theme in 2006, when the conference was held in Nova Scotia, was Baptists and Mission. This is a theme that has been at the heart of Baptist life. Papers examined home and foreign mission, evangelicalism, and social concern. This volume draws together a range of the papers that were delivered. This volume has studies of significant Baptist figures such as Hanserd Knollys, Andrew Fuller, and Earl Merrick. Home mission in a number of settings in North America and Europe is examined. The range of places covered in the papers on overseas mission is considerable, including Bolivia, Mexico, India, Ivory Coast, and Brazil.
