The focus of the study is on the search for meanings of local concepts. This study reveals and analyzes the concepts concerning home and their sociocultural strategies for maintaining a sense of community and identity. In this study, identifying local concepts becomes the hallmark and the hub of analyses that explore, verify and establish relations between ideas and phenomena. Based on these relations, this study attempts to capture the reality of the local world that upholds and sustains the communities’ values, norms and principles for what they may call a homeland. The book is organized into two parts. Part I describes a cross-regional habitation in Indonesia, while Part II presents four ethnic regions of Indonesia - Sa’dan Toraja, Bali, Naga and Minangkabau. Their unique traditions, customs, beliefs and attitudes serve to provide diversity in terms of their backgrounds and lifestyles, though they share the challenge of sustaining their sense of home in the face of modernity as characterized by changes and developments toward a technologically industrialized society. The central research questions are - What is development in terms of culture and environmental sustainability? How do these communities respond to modernity?

This edited volume is the first book, which not only deals with the 1999 legislation but also shows how the deficiencies and contradictions of this legislation reduced implementation between 2001 and 2004 to a try-out. The book also discusses the adaptations that were the focus of the debate on the revision of the 1999 legislation that resulted in the 2004 update legislation and the amendment of the 1945 Constitution. Anthropological case studies of five provinces complement and deepen the findings of the more general survey reports.

While kinship theory has been central to the study of social organization, an alternative approach has emerged—that of seeing the "house" both as a physical and symbolic structure and a principle of social organization. The house stands as a model social formation that is distinguished by its attention to a number of material domains (land, the dwelling, ritual and nonritual objects). As the essays in this volume make clear, the focus on material culture and on place contributes to the ongoing convergence of anthropology and history and helps erase the artificial distinctions between prehistory and history. The theme of the ICoST is “Roles and Challenges of Science and Technology in Guaranteeing Halal Products in the Industrial Revolution 4.0”. The Indonesian government has begun to respond this industrial change by launching the roadmap of 'Making Indonesia 4.0' as a strategy to ease Indonesia's steps to become one of the new powers in Asia in April 2018. This roadmap provides a clear direction for the movement of the national industry in the future, including a focus on developing priority sectors that will become Indonesia's strength towards Industry 4.0. The proceeding of ICoST contains the scientific research, written by the academicians, researchers, practitioners, and government elements who have the same thoughts about the effort to develop the society’s ability to adapt the advancement of science and technology in the global competition to face the industrial revolution 4.0. We are also very grateful to all keynote speakers and committee members, willing to act as referee for their time and efforts to keep our conference going well. In the future, we expect the ICoST will be able to provide another scientific atmosphere and stimulate more participants to join this conference.
