Book excerpt: Extra Bold is the inclusive, practical, and informative (design) career guide for everyone! Part textbook and part comic book, zine, manifesto, survival guide, and self-help manual, Extra Bold is filled with stories and ideas that don't show up in other career books or design overviews. • Both pragmatic and inquisitive, the book explores power structures in the workplace and how to navigate them. • Interviews showcase people at different stages of their careers. • Biographical sketches explore individuals marginalized by sexism, racism, and ableism. • Practical guides cover everything from starting out, to wage gaps, coming out at work, cover letters, mentoring, and more. A new take on the design canon. • Opens with critical essays that rethink design principles and practices through theories of feminism, anti-racism, inclusion, and nonbinary thinking. • Features interviews, essays, typefaces, and projects from dozens of contributors with a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, abilities, gender identities, and positions of economic and social privilege. • Adds new voices to the dominant design canon. Written collaboratively by a diverse team of authors, with original, handcrafted illustrations by Jennifer Tobias that bring warmth, happiness, humor, and narrative depth to the book. Extra Bold is written by Ellen Lupton (Thinking with Type), Farah Kafei, Jennifer Tobias, Josh A. Halstead, Kaleena Sales, Leslie Xia, and Valentina Vergara.

Book Two Faiths One Banner

Download or read book Two Faiths One Banner written by Ian Almond and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in our turbulent day, we hear of a clash of civilizations, it s easy to imagine an unbridgeable chasm between the Islamic world and Christendom stretching back through time. "Two Faiths, One Banner" shows how in Europe, Muslims and Christians were often comrades-in-arms, repeatedly forming alliances to wage war against their own faiths and peoples. This bold book reveals how the idea of a Christian Europe long opposed by a Muslim non-Europe grossly misrepresents the facts of a rich, complex, and above all shared history.

Book The Prayer Book of Charles the Bold

Download or read book The Prayer Book of Charles the Bold written by Antoine de Schryver and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1469, the accounts of Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy (reigned 1467-77) record a payment to the noted scribe Nicolas Spierinc 'for having written ... some prayers for my lord.' Seven months later, the same accounts record a payment to the illuminator Lievin van Lathern for twenty-five miniatures plus borders and decorated initials in the same manuscript. In this study, the late Antoine de Schryver - an internationally renowned art historian - presents a thoroughly researched and balanced argument suggesting that the documents refer to the exquisite prayer book of Charles the Bold which can now be found in the collection of the J. Getty Museum. --book jacket.

Book Mobility and Displacement

Download or read book Mobility and Displacement written by Orhon Myadar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and contests both outsiders’ projections of Mongolia and the self-objectifying tropes Mongolians routinely deploy to represent their own country as a land of nomads. It speaks to the experiences of many societies and cultures that are routinely treated as exotic, romantic, primitive or otherwise different and Other in Euro-American imaginaries, and how these imaginaries are also internally produced by those societies themselves. The assumption that Mongolia is a nomadic nation is largely predicated upon Mongolia’s environmental and climatic conditions, which are understood to make Mongolia suitable for little else than pastoral nomadism. But to the contrary, the majority of Mongolians have been settled in and around cities and small population centers. Even Mongolians who are herders have long been unable to move freely in a smooth space, as dictated by the needs of their herds, and as they would as free-roaming "nomads." Instead, they have been subjected to various constraints across time that have significantly limited their movement. The book weaves threads from disparate branches of Mongolian studies to expose various visible and invisible constraints on population mobility in Mongolia from the Qing period to the post-socialist era. With its in-depth analysis of the complexities of the relationship between land rights, mobility, displacement, and the state, the book makes a valuable contribution to the fields of cultural geography, political geography, heritage and culture studies, as well as Eurasian and Inner-Asian Studies.
