Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Finance: With Chapters on Money and Banking No one will question the need of a systematic treatise on National and State finance. The exercise of more intelligent public economy and more efficient justice are matters of great practical importance with many who feel the burden of taxation. These matters are not less vital to the toiling millions, whose struggle to live has grown fiercer under the withering sun of world-wide competition. Nor is the interest of the moralist and patriot less significant, even though it cannot be measured by the same standards of pain and pleasure that are applied to others. I have tried to make a book for that large class of readers who, it is believed, are in quest of information presented in an orderly form concerning public expenditures and revenues, money and banking, and know not where to look in any single work. Of course, many articles may be found in magazines, government reports and the publications dealing with particular financial questions, but something more than these is desired. An explanation may be made concerning the use of references. In a few cases a reference has been given to strengthen the assertion in the text. In other cases references have been added to indicate where more complete sources of readily accessible information may be found, should the reader desire to extend his inquiries. Book Bank Credit and Agriculture

Download or read book Bank Credit and Agriculture written by Ivan Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bank Credit and Agriculture: Under the National and Federal Reserve Banking Systems The object of this book is to outline the conditions of the bank credit situation in relation to American agriculture under the National and Federal Reserve banking systems. It seems necessary to set forth briefly in Part I some of the short-term credit needs of agriculture, without special regard to any particular banking system or institution, except for the purposes of explanation and illustration. Part II will consist of a brief history and analysis of the short-term agricultural credit conditions under the national banking system with special consideration of the legal and economic restrictions, and the seasonal movements of currency. Part III will take up an investigation of the Federal Reserve System in relation to short-term agricultural credit. Consideration will be given to the provisions for short-term agricultural credit, and the ways in which the system has functioned in relation to agriculture, and the livestock industry. It is not the purpose of this book to argue the case either for or against agriculture, but rather to analyze the needs for and conditions of short-term agricultural credit under the existing banking systems. This volume is a simplified and condensed presentation of the bank credit section of research investigations conducted by the author into the problems of agricultural finance. It is hoped that this book will meet a long-felt need for a thorough understanding of the relation between agriculture and the existing banking facilities. A large number of colleges and universities offer courses dealing with the problems of credit, banking and investments in relation to agriculture. These courses are variously named as "Rural credits," "Financing agriculture," and the like. This book covers the fundamentals and practices in financing agriculture in the United States and is intended to meet the urgent need of teachers and students of these problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Financial Power of the Empire Six or seven months ago the world had achieved at least a mechanical unity. The merchant in New York or Pekin could telegraph money or messages in a moment to any part of the globe. Almost at any time. On any day. One could buy transportation to any part of the civilized world. Year after year. With but slight interruptions, this process had been going forward; and year after year the boundaries of what we call civilization were being extended. Then, with paralysing sud denese. This artificial structure of commerce. Trade and finance was submerged as completely as Herculaneum was blotted out by the ashes of Vesuvius. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bank Credit: A Study of the Principles and Factors Underlying Advances Made by Banks to Borrowers Bank credit, as the term is used in this volume, stands for credit extended by banks to borrowers. Bankers frequently use the term in the plural, meaning advances made to their borrowing customers. Whether the borrower withdraws the amount of the proceeds of his loan in cash at once or leaves it on deposit with the lending bank, the loan in either case constitutes credit extended. Just as a merchant extends credit to the customer who pays for his purchase at a later time, so the banker extends credit to the business man who borrows money. Whether the money is taken from the bank at the time the loan is made, the next day, or ten days later, makes no essential difference; bank credit may take even the form of an overdraft. Book Bankers and Credit Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bankers and Credit Classic Reprint written by Hartley Withers and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bankers and Credit What happened to our monetary system during and after the war, some of the things that a crowd of critics and reformers want to do to it now, and the reasons which seem to me to confirm the opinion of our leading bankers, that the first thing to do is to get back to the gold standard on the pre-war basis, are the subject of this book. It cannot claim to have covered all the suggestions of all the monetary reformers, who have been multiplied almost as fast as money by the efforts of our politicians. All that it can hope to do is to cull a few of the brightest flowers of the criticism that has bloomed so freely, and to put before the lay reader, in language that he can understand, some of the ambitions of those who believe that the economic Paradise is to be won by monetary manipulation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loans and Investments Chicfly engaged in the business of lending money, but at a matter of fact money loans make up a small part of their business. The invest ments of savings banks are indeed limited to the funds which they have received from depositors, together with such amounts as have been set aside from profits as surplus, and also in the case of stock savings banks the amount received from subscriptions to capital stock. Other banks, includ ing the banking departments of trust companies, while they must always be prepared to f arnish money on demand, do not limit their loans and other investments to the f nuds received from de positors and shareholders. They lend their credit as well, and thus create a large part of the funds utilized by borrowers. Banks other than savings banks might well therefore be called credit banks. Book North South Finance

Download or read book North South Finance written by Donald R. Lessard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North-South Finance: The Implications of Overreliance on Bank Credit The absolute growth in ldg external financing has been accompanied by substantial shifts in the composition of ldg obligations. The most striking change, documented in Table 1, is the increase in debt relative to direct foreign investment, the only significant category of risk financing for most ldcs. Total debt rose from 69 percent of total ldg obligations in 1973 to 83 percent in 1981. Further, short - term debt grew more quickly than long-term debt and debt from private sources, primarily commercial banks, outstripped official lending. However, this privatization on the lending side was not accompanied by a similar shift on the borrowing side. Rather, the proportion of long - term debt owed by or guaranteed by ldg governments rose from 74 to 79 percent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Our Financial Fabric In order to build up my arguments I start from the foundation, and in the earlier chapters deal with the monetary problem and the general working of the banking system. These lead us into the region of dialectics and controversy and to a survey of the happenings during the crisis. I urge amongst other contentions that banks do not in the true connotation of the word create credit. If it be possible to convince ourselves that they do not create credit, that credit is a something existing prior to and independently of banking, it will, I think, make the gold reserve problem easier to solve. Book The Science of Finance

Download or read book The Science of Finance written by R. H. Patterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Finance: A Practical Treatise is a book authored by economist R.H. Patterson, and is a weighty examination of finance. R.H. Patterson's work is a thorough analysis of the financial systems of Great Britain in the 1860s. The Science of Finance is not an introductory text, but rather more of a case study. The work opens with a macro level view of the credit system in place at the time of the book's writing, a system which the author believes is responsible for much of the nation's economic development. The book goes on to examine many of the principal attributes of the British economy, including the concept of capital, the rate of interest, monetary policies, free trade in banking, municipal finance, and much more. Patterson uses a combination of the theoretical and real-world examples to illustrate his points. The book is concluded by a series of appendices that will appeal to the most ardent of readers. In addition to the practical information contained within, the book also provides the reader with an excellent history of the British financial system, and the keen reader will certainly identify the major changes that have taken place since the publication of this text. R.H. Patterson's The Science of Finance: A Practical Treatise is a challenging but informative book about the financial system of England in the nineteenth century. Those familiar with the study of economics and those interested in economic history will likely find this be a worthwhile read, and are encouraged to add this title to their personal libraries.
