Book Money and Banking Classic Reprint

Download or read book Money and Banking Classic Reprint written by John Thom Holdsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking The treatment of Money in Part I follows in a general way the lines made familiar by other standard works to which frequent references are made in the footnotes and m the suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. The efiort has been made to compress this part of the book into the smallest space consistent with a presentation of essentials in the history, theory and principles of money, leaving the major part of the book for the discussion of the principles and practices of banking. In the chapters devoted to banking organization and practice it has been impossible to give consideration to the varying local cus toms and practices of different types of banking institutions. The aim has been to describe those principles and practices of commercial banking that are common to all banks. Though the new Federal reserve system introduces far reaching changes in our banking and currency system, many years must elapse before its full effects can be definitely measured. Throughout Part II frequent reference is made to various provisions of the Act of 1913, and Chapter XXII is devoted to an analysis of its leading provisions, and a summary of the steps taken in the establishment of the new system. A proper understanding of the new system, how ever, can be gained only by following its Operations and marking the effect of changes that will certainly be made in the law from time to time. It is believed that the addition of the complete text of the Federal Reserve Act (appendix) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Currency and Banking The suspension of specie payments by all the banks in the United States, south of New England, in the year 1814, and of all, with a very few trifling excep tions, in the year 1837, has strongly impressed-the public mind with the belief that there is something defective in the present banking system of this coun try; and it is not, perhaps, venturing too much to assert, that there are now elements at work, which will ultimately overthrow the whole fabric, unless those who have the power to remedy the evil, shall introduce the reforms which can alone render a repe tition of such a calamity impossible. Book Money and Banking

Download or read book Money and Banking written by Horace White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking: Illustrated by American History Very few persons, if any, are satisfied with our present monetary condition. While I write these lines a withdrawal of $2, 3 gold from the Treasury causes a fresh tremor and confusion of tongues. Everybody assures everybody else, and tries to assure himself, that it is of no consequence. Probably no harm will come of it, but why should it be noticed at all, except by a few dealers in foreign exchange? Because the public Treasury undertakes to maintain the ultimate gold reserve of the country, and because people doubt whether it can do so at all times. Are these doubts unreasonable? The only law on the statute book really effective for the discharge of this obligation was passed in 1862 for a different emergency, had been forgotten a quar ter of a century, and was discovered by accident the last day in the afternoon. As regards the act of 187 5 (under which gold was twice procured last year for the replenish ment of the Treasury) it is a matter of dispute whether it is still in force, or whether it lapsed when specie payments were resumed. A dispute on such a question is itself an incentive to panic. Moreover, everything depends upon the mood and temper of the Administration for the time being whether such powers as the law confers shall be exercised wisely and promptly, or exercised at all. Book Readings in Money and Banking

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Money and Banking: Selected and Adapted Designed mainly for class room use in connection with one of the introductory manuals on the subject of Money and Banking or of Money and Currency, this volume, in itself, lays no claim to completeness. Where its use is contem plated the problems of emphasis and proportion are, accord ingly, to be solved by the selection of one or another of the available texts, or by the choice of supplementary lecture topics and materials. The contents of the introductory manuals are so divergent in character as to render possible combinations of text and readings that will include, it is hoped, matter of such range and variety as may be desired. Fullness of treatment has been attempted, however, in the chapters dealing with the important recent developments in the mechanism of exchange, and my aim has been through out to Select and, in many instances, to adapt with a view to meeting the wants of those who are interested chiefly in the modern phases of the subject. Book The Reform of the Currency Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reform of the Currency Classic Reprint written by Henry Raymond Mussey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reform of the Currency Hence the national banks were bound to exercise some con trol over the business and especially the' issues of the local banks. Both of them did exercise such control. The means employed by both banks were identical, consisting, as Gallatin says, in receiving the notes of all those which are solvent, and requiring payment from time to time without suffering the bal anecs due by any to become too large. To do this the banks of the United States had to be creditors of the state banks. This they were enabled to be, first, because they received the government revenues as the depositaries of the goverment, and second, because of their possession of branches. As deposit aries of the government they received immense quantities of state bank paper. These were then presented to the state banks for payment. In case control was exercised by a branch, it was done by issuing the notes of the branch in the neighborhood of a state bank, and receiving state bank notes on deposit for these issues. The branch then presented the state bank notes to the issuing bank for redemption. In both cases, the state bank pos sessed no means of obtaining branch bank notes to anything like the amount necessary to act as a set-off to its own issues. The state banks were not receivers of the revenue, and they could not get possession of any considerable quantity of branch bank notes because these served as an excellent means of re mittance for individuals who wished to forward funds to other parts of the country. Persons holding state bank notes were always willing to exchange them for paper of the bank of the United States, while nobody wished to exchange notes of the United States bank for state bank notes. Consequently, the branches always had the means of checking the state banks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of Banking and Currency in Ohio Before the Civil War

Download or read book A History of Banking and Currency in Ohio Before the Civil War written by Charles Clifford Huntington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Banking and Currency in Ohio Before the Civil War: A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the following pages on the development of banking and currency in Ohio from 1803 to 1863 an attempt has been made to point out also some of the relations of those subjects to the general economic and political history of the state. The monograph had its origin several years ago in the seminary in business organization of Professor Jeremiah W. Jenks while the writer was a graduate student in Cornell University, and to Professor Jenks he is indebted for many helpful suggestions and discussions in planning and prosecuting the work in its early stages. To Dr. Charles H. Hull, Professor of American History, Cornell University, and to Dr. Frank A. Fetter of Princeton University, formerly Professor of Political Economy and Finance, Cornell University, the author also owes a debt of gratitude. Both of these gentlemen read much of the manuscript and their careful criticisms proved of great value throughout the study. What began as an investigation of the development of business organization in Ohio prior to 1863 soon resolved itself into a study of banks and banking, for during that period banks were the largest and the most numerous representatives of the corporate form of business organization in the state. They were the pioneers in big business in Ohio. It has seemed proper to treat the subject in two parts: first, because authorized banking almost ceased in Ohio between 1843 and 1845, as may readily be seen from the diagram in the appendix; second, because the basis of note issue, the chief function of a bank in those days, was entirely different in Ohio before from what it was after the dates unamed; and finally, because at that time the practice of incorporating banks by special acts of the legislature gave way to the method of organizing them under general laws. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Currency and Banking in the Province of the Massachusetts-Bay, Vol. 1: Currency The investigation Of the Land Bank experiment did not Of necessity carry with it the study of the different forms Of provincial currency then in circulation, but it did involve the careful examination Of numerous statutes and the perusal Of many contemporary pam phlets in which questions Of currency as well as banking were discussed. The familiarity with the legal and pamphlet literature Of the period which resulted from this research tended greatly to reduce the formidable character of the Obstacles to an investigation of the history of the currency emissions; Of the meaning Of the various forms of bills; Of the causes for their adoption; Of the fluctuations Of the currency, and Of the grave difficulties which arose therefrom in the ad justment Of debts. More than that, with increased knowledge of the subject came a positive interest in itand a desire to develop it not only upon the historical but also upon the economic side.
