Book 13 Bankers

Download or read book 13 Bankers written by Simon Johnson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of its key role in creating the ruinous financial crisis of 2008, the American banking industry has grown bigger, more profitable, and more resistant to regulation than ever. Anchored by six megabanks whose assets amount to more than 60 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, this oligarchy proved it could first hold the global economy hostage and then use its political muscle to fight off meaningful reform. 13 Bankers brilliantly charts the rise to power of the financial sector and forcefully argues that we must break up the big banks if we want to avoid future financial catastrophes. Updated, with additional analysis of the government’s recent attempt to reform the banking industry, this is a timely and expert account of our troubled political economy.

Book Bank Credit and Agriculture

Download or read book Bank Credit and Agriculture written by Ivan Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bank Credit and Agriculture: Under the National and Federal Reserve Banking Systems The object of this book is to outline the conditions of the bank credit situation in relation to American agriculture under the National and Federal Reserve banking systems. It seems necessary to set forth briefly in Part I some of the short-term credit needs of agriculture, without special regard to any particular banking system or institution, except for the purposes of explanation and illustration. Part II will consist of a brief history and analysis of the short-term agricultural credit conditions under the national banking system with special consideration of the legal and economic restrictions, and the seasonal movements of currency. Part III will take up an investigation of the Federal Reserve System in relation to short-term agricultural credit. Consideration will be given to the provisions for short-term agricultural credit, and the ways in which the system has functioned in relation to agriculture, and the livestock industry. It is not the purpose of this book to argue the case either for or against agriculture, but rather to analyze the needs for and conditions of short-term agricultural credit under the existing banking systems. This volume is a simplified and condensed presentation of the bank credit section of research investigations conducted by the author into the problems of agricultural finance. It is hoped that this book will meet a long-felt need for a thorough understanding of the relation between agriculture and the existing banking facilities. A large number of colleges and universities offer courses dealing with the problems of credit, banking and investments in relation to agriculture. These courses are variously named as "Rural credits," "Financing agriculture," and the like. This book covers the fundamentals and practices in financing agriculture in the United States and is intended to meet the urgent need of teachers and students of these problems. Book The Bankers New Clothes

Download or read book The Bankers New Clothes written by Anat Admati and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Bloomberg Businessweek Book of the Year Why our banking system is broken—and what we must do to fix it New bank failures have been a rude awakening for everyone who believed that the banking industry was reformed after the Global Financial Crisis—and that we’d never again have to choose between massive bailouts and financial havoc. The Bankers’ New Clothes uncovers just how little things have changed—and why banks are still so dangerous. Writing in clear language that anyone can understand, Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig debunk the false and misleading claims of bankers, regulators, politicians, academics, and others who oppose effective reform, and they explain how the banking system can be made safer and healthier. Thoroughly updated for a world where bank failures have made a dramatic return, this acclaimed and important book now features a new preface and four new chapters that expose the shortcomings of current policies and reveal how the dominance of banking even presents dangers to the rule of law and democracy itself.

Download or read book Talks on Banking and Elementary Economics 1922 1923 written by American Bankers Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Banking and Elementary Economics, 1922-1923: To Be Delivered by the Banker Before the Higher Grades of Grammar Schools, High Schools, Colleges and Universities The bankers whose talks were of greatest benefit last year were those who, after each third or fourth talk invited the teachers and the pupils of the classes to visit the banks to visualize what had been discussed; who there took pains to make the visitors feel that they were truly welcome and that a bank is, in a large measure, a public institution, created for the best possible community advancement, and an institution which desires above all things to serve. While bankers, not accustomed to public speaking, may approach this new duty with some hesitation, they will soon find in it a charm that will make them want to continue a work which must ultimately prove of inestimable value to the banker's community, and to the country at large, to say nothing of the banking business itself to which many benefits will accrue from a greater general prosperity. Immediately upon receipt of these Talks, the banker should get in touch with the school authorities nearest his bank, and arrange for the date and hour when he is to appear at the school. The local banker should endeavor to arrange with his newspaper for the publication of these Talks as soon as possible after the date set for their release. The Committee on Public Education bespeaks for this work the earnest and thoughtful cooperation of the bankers of America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loans and Investments Chicfly engaged in the business of lending money, but at a matter of fact money loans make up a small part of their business. The invest ments of savings banks are indeed limited to the funds which they have received from depositors, together with such amounts as have been set aside from profits as surplus, and also in the case of stock savings banks the amount received from subscriptions to capital stock. Other banks, includ ing the banking departments of trust companies, while they must always be prepared to f arnish money on demand, do not limit their loans and other investments to the f nuds received from de positors and shareholders. They lend their credit as well, and thus create a large part of the funds utilized by borrowers. Banks other than savings banks might well therefore be called credit banks. The chronicler says that the Count took certain morsels of paper, and, writing the amount of the sum he wished them to represent, affixed his name, and ordered that the inhabitants of Albania should take them in payment at the gold values represented, threatening the severest penalties to nil who should refuse their reception.
