Book excerpt: This is a fascinating window on the life and times of a banker in a bygone age. It is a mosaic of privilege, adventure, romance and dedication against a background of the rarefied world of international finance. A de facto conquest of Mt Everest, throwing a General across a room, a Hong Kong typhoon and civil unrest, are just some of the authors experiences. HSBC is singled out for the highest praise as a financial institution, yet the Bank is also exposed as a long service pension confiscator, attracting widespread condemnation. Generously illustrated, the apt juxtaposition of Shakespearean quotes adds a theatrical dimension to the story.

Book The World Bank s Role in Human Resource Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book The World Bank s Role in Human Resource Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by Ronald Gene Ridker and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Discussion Paper 244. Although many studies have analyzed the gender gap in primary and secondary education in developing countries, this study is one of the few that analyzes the gap at the tertiary, or university level. The authors track the patterns in women's access to and achievement in higher education, including student enrollment and access to faculty and administrative positions. The study also identifies successful strategies and measures for reducing the gender gap. Two issues are examined in this paper. Part I reviews how women have fared in the wake of expanded tertiary enrollments over the past three decades. Despite evidence proving the importance of women's access to higher education for economic growth, a pervasive gap remains, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. The second part examines the World Bank's experience in projects designed to improve women's experience in higher education. The extent and severity of constraints varied across regions. Results are limited and many projects are still in progress. The findings suggest that countries with low per capita income levels and difficult social settings for women may have the greatest barriers to female participation. Even where social constraints are less severe, the programs for improving female education must respond to the demands of the labor market.

Book Central Bank Governance and the Role of Nonfinancial Risk Management

Download or read book Central Bank Governance and the Role of Nonfinancial Risk Management written by Ashraf Khan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper argues that nonfinancial risk management is an essential element of good governance of central banks. It provides a funnelled analysis, on the basis of selected literature, by (i) presenting an outline of central bank governance in general; (ii) zooming in on internal governance and organization issues of central banks; (iii) highlighting the main issues with nonfinancial risk management; and (iv) ending with recommendations for future work. It shows how attention for nonfinancial risk management has been growing, and how this has amplified the call for better governance of central banks. It stresses that in the area of nonfinancial risk management there are no crucial differences between commercial and central banks: both have people, processes, procedures, and structures. It highlights policy areas to be explored.

Book The World Bank s Role in the Electric Power Sector

Download or read book The World Bank s Role in the Electric Power Sector written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank is changing the way it does business in the energy sector. This Policy Paper is one of two that outlines the Bank's new policies for the sector. The review was prompted by concern about the effects of power generation on the environment and on populations that may be resettled to make way for projects. Another stimulus was the macroeceonomic reality of fewer investment resources in many countries. And many developing countries are becoming more receptive to reforming the way energy is produced and consumed. This paper credits the "public monopoly" approach of the last 30 years with facilitating expansion of power supplies, capturing technical economies of scale, and making effective use of scarce managerial and technical skills. Nonetheless, it recommends several new policies to improve the performance of the electric power sector in developing countries. These reforms will guide future Bank activities in the sector. Bank loans for electric power will go first to countries clearly committed to improving the performance of their power sectors. The Bank will also discourage subsidies on energy prices and will encourage private investment in utilities. And it will provide financing to help the least developed countries import power where local generation is not practical. The efficiency of production and use of electric power in developing countries is examined in a companion paper, Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the Developing World: The World Banks Role . The World Bank's Role in the Electric Power Sector is also available in Spanish: La funcion del Banco Mundial en el sector de la electricidad. Politicas para efectuar una reforma institucional, regulatoria, y financieria eficaz. (ISBN 0-8213-2451-9) / Stock No. 12451 / $7.95 / Price code 007 / Spanis

Book Competition and Bank Risk the Role of Securitization and Bank Capital

Download or read book Competition and Bank Risk the Role of Securitization and Bank Capital written by Yener Altunbas and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine how bank competition in the run-up to the 2007–2009 crisis affects banks’ systemic risk during the crisis. We then investigate whether this effect is influenced by two key bank characteristics: securitization and bank capital. Using a sample of the largest listed banks from 15 countries, we find that greater market power at the bank level and higher competition at the industry level lead to higher realized systemic risk. The results suggest that the use of securitization exacerbates the effects of market power on the systemic dimension of bank risk, while capitalization partially mitigates its impact.

Book The Role of Bank Capital in Bank Holding Companies Decisions

Download or read book The Role of Bank Capital in Bank Holding Companies Decisions written by Mr.Adolfo Barajas and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the role of bank capital in decision-making by bank holding companies (BHCs) in the United States. Following Chami and Cosimano’s (2001) call option approach to bank capital, BHCs optimally choose the amount of capital to insure the bank against becoming capital constrained in the future. We provide empirical support for this model, and find that a higher optimal level of capital leads to higher loan rates. Furthermore, higher loan rates result in lower amounts of lending. Thus, an increase in capital requirements is likely to lead to higher loan rates and a significant reduction in lending.

Book Capital Flows The Role of Bank and Nonbank Balance Sheets

Download or read book Capital Flows The Role of Bank and Nonbank Balance Sheets written by Ms.Yuko Hashimoto and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses the role of bank and nonbank financial institutions’ balance sheet foreign exposures and risk management practices in driving capital flow responses to global risk. Using a unique and previously unexplored dataset on domestic and cross border balance sheet positions of financial institutions collected by the IMF, we show that the response of overall capital flows to global risk shocks is associated with the on-balance sheet foreign exposures of nonbanks, but not with that of banks. A possible interpretation is that risk-averse and dynamically optimizing nonbanks reduce their foreign risk exposure when global risk perceptions increase, leading to capital flows, while banks tend to be hedged against these risks off balance sheet. In advanced countries, the findings suggest that nonbank portfolio adjustment to changing risk conditions may take place through derivatives transactions with banks, the hedging practices of which trigger bank related capital flows rather than portfolio flows.
