Book Integration of European Banking

Download or read book Integration of European Banking written by Pedro Pita Barros and published by Centre for Economic Policy Research. This book was released on 2005 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. The regulation of network industries has emerged as a key issue on the European policy agenda, yet there is little high-quality research capable of informing the European policy debate. The Monitoring European Deregulation (MED) series was launched by CEPR and SNS in 1997 and features new, policy-oriented research on the liberalization of the European markets of the major network industries (previous reports have focused on telecommunications and electricity). Addressed to a wide audience of both academics and European decisionmakers in the private-sector and policy communities, at both the national and EU level, the new reportwhich focuses on the deregulation of the European banking systemwill play an important role in influencing current thinking on these issues and contributing to the policy debate.

Book Banking Concentration in the European Union During the Last Fifteen Years

Download or read book Banking Concentration in the European Union During the Last Fifteen Years written by Roberto J. Santillán-Salgado and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in the concentration of the banking industry across European Union countries during the last fifteen years can be explained in terms of: a) global factors, like the comprehensive adoption of technological innovations, the intensification of competition that has resulted from the deregulation of the financial sector and, more recently, as a consequence of the government interventions and forced acquisitions prompted by the 2007-2009 financial crisis; and, b) factors that have been specific to the E.U., in particular, the structural changes that took place in the region as a result of the creation of the Single Financial Market (1993) and the introduction of the euro (1999). This work analyzes the concentration process of the banking industry in the E.U. during the last fifteen years giving preeminence to the strategic choices made by the region's commercial banks. It also reports the most visible E.U. banks' M&As and government interventions that resulted from the 2007-2009 financial crisis, make a preliminary evaluation of the outcomes, and suggests possible future trends for the banking industry in the region.

Book Does Competition Lead to Efficiency The Case of EU Commercial Banks

Download or read book Does Competition Lead to Efficiency The Case of EU Commercial Banks written by Barbara Casu and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using bank level balance sheet data for commercial banks in the major EU banking markets, this paper aims to shed some light on the recent developments in competition, concentration and bank-specific efficiency levels. Furthermore, using Granger-type causality test estimations, this study investigates the relationship between competition and efficiency. Results indicate that the main EU banking markets are becoming progressively more concentrated and less cost efficient. On average, banks seem to have reduced their marginal costs faster than price falls; this led to an increase in the Lerner index thus suggesting greater market power. However, our findings do not support Hick's quiet life hypothesis as they indicate that an increase in banks' monopoly power does not translate into a decrease in cost efficiency. On the other hand, results of the reverse causality tests provide no evidence that increases in efficiency precede increases in market power.

Book Assessing the Performance of Banking M As in Europe

Download or read book Assessing the Performance of Banking M As in Europe written by Rym Ayadi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European banking sector consolidated at a rapid pace throughout the 1990s. It was pushed along by several concurrent factors: the deregulation of banking activities, the further integration of the European financial market, financial globalization, technological and financial innovations, the imperative of value creation, and the introduction of the euro. Far from slowing down, this consolidation process is expected to accelerate over the coming years. This book examines the performance of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the banking industry in Europe and introduces a new conceptual approach for assessing the phenomenon. The results show that the economic and financial performance of a banking M&A depends on its underlying strategy. This strategy is based on two factors: a bank's initial activities and its geographical reach. The book demonstrates that achieving the optimal combination of these two factors is critical to the success or failure of an M&A.

Book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe

Download or read book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe written by Rym Ayadi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A midst stormy waters, financial systems develop and evolve. New institutional forms and instruments are invented and put into use. Some of them turn out to be successful while others disappear: a natural process of creative and dynamic competition argues for diversity. Diversity offers an optimal environment in which new ideas can come to life, existing ideas can evolve and old ideas make a comeback. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the foundations of several decades of modern and innovative financial systems have suffered serious damage. This has triggered massive state interventions and has led authorities to revamp the regulatory structures and frameworks. While many voices have called for a return to more traditional approaches to banking and finance, no one has argued the merits of diversity. This book investigates the merits of a diverse banking system with a special focus on the performance and role of cooperative banks in seven European countries where they are prominent (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain). The theoretical and empirical arguments that are developed in this book tend to support the view that it is economically beneficial to have stakeholder-value banks with a dual bottom-line function, such as cooperative banks. For those who accept this premise, it would suggest that policy-makers should not take or support actions that could jeopardise this valuable element of the financial system in various countries in Europe and of the emerging integrated European financial system. Book The Theory of Industrial Organization

Download or read book The Theory of Industrial Organization written by Jean Tirole and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1988-08-26 with total page 1482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Industrial Organization is the first primary text to treat the new industrial organization at the advanced-undergraduate and graduate level. Rigorously analytical and filled with exercises coded to indicate level of difficulty, it provides a unified and modern treatment of the field with accessible models that are simplified to highlight robust economic ideas while working at an intuitive level. To aid students at different levels, each chapter is divided into a main text and supplementary section containing more advanced material. Each chapter opens with elementary models and builds on this base to incorporate current research in a coherent synthesis. Tirole begins with a background discussion of the theory of the firm. In Part I he develops the modern theory of monopoly, addressing single product and multi product pricing, static and intertemporal price discrimination, quality choice, reputation, and vertical restraints. In Part II, Tirole takes up strategic interaction between firms, starting with a novel treatment of the Bertrand-Cournot interdependent pricing problem. He studies how capacity constraints, repeated interaction, product positioning, advertising, and asymmetric information affect competition or tacit collusion. He then develops topics having to do with long term competition, including barriers to entry, contestability, exit, and research and development. He concludes with a "game theory user's manual" and a section of review exercises. Important Notice: The digital edition of this book is missing some of the images found in the physical edition.

Book Competition versus Efficiency

Download or read book Competition versus Efficiency written by Olivier De Jonghe and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates how stock market investors perceive the impact of market structure and efficiency on the long-run performance potential of European banks. To that end, a modified Tobin's Q ratio is introduced as a measure of bank franchise value. This measure is applied to discriminate between the market structure and efficient-structure hypotheses in a coherent forward-looking framework, in which differences in banks' horizontal and vertical differentiation strategies are controlled for. The results show that banks with better management or production technologies possess a long-run competitive advantage. In addition, bank market concentration does not affect all banks equally. Only the banks with a large market share in a concentrated market are able to generate non-competitive rents. The paper further documents that the forward-looking, long-run perspective and the noise-adjustment of the performance measure overcome most of the drawbacks associated with testing these hypotheses in a multi-country set-up. Finally, notwithstanding the international expansion of bank activities, the harmonization of regulation and the macroeconomic convergence in the European Union (EU15), we still find that country-specific macroeconomic variables have a significant impact on bank performance. The findings indicate that there is a trade-off between competition and stability that should be taken into account when assessing mergers or acquisitions.(Published as: Competition versus efficiency: What drives franchise values in European banking?,Journal of Banking amp; Finance Volume 32, Issue 9, September 2008, Pages 1820-1835).

Book Banking Efficiency and Stock Performance in the EU Markets

Download or read book Banking Efficiency and Stock Performance in the EU Markets written by Saleem Janoudi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between bank efficiency and stock performance in the EU markets using 141 commercial banks over the period 2004-2010. First, we estimate cost and profit efficiencies of banking sectors in the 27 European Union countries over the period 2004-2010 using the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). The main EU sample is further divided into two sub-samples; the old and the new EU countries. Then, using listed banks only from the first step, we investigate if changes in cost and profit efficiencies are reflected in annual stock returns. Our results indicate that changes in both cost and profit efficiencies are significantly reflected in changes in stock prices suggesting that stocks of cost and profit efficient banks tend to outperform their inefficient counterparts. However, the results suggest that profit efficiency is more informative than cost efficiency as the former explains, to a larger extent, the variability in stock returns than the latter. Not surprisingly, the world financial crisis (2007-2009) appears to have a negative influence on both banking efficiency and stock performance.
