Book The Regulation of International Financial Markets

Download or read book The Regulation of International Financial Markets written by Rainer Grote and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-16 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International financial relations have become increasingly important for the development of global and national economies. At present these relations are primarily governed by market forces, with little regulatory interference at the international level. In the light of numerous financial crises, this abstinence must be seriously questioned. Starting with an analysis of the regulatory problems at the international level, with only minimal powers entrusted to international organisations, this book develops various possibilities for reform. On the basis of an historical analysis, the book first adopts a comparative approach to national attempts to regulate international financial markets, then outlines the potential of relevant institutions and finally develops a policy perspective. It seeks to provide a framework for analysing options for the regulation of international financial markets from a public international law and comparative law perspective.

Book Current Challenges in Financial Regulation

Download or read book Current Challenges in Financial Regulation written by Stijn Claessens and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial intermediation and financial services industries have undergone many changes in the past two decades due to deregulation, globalization, and technological advances. The framework for regulating finance has seen many changes as well, with approaches adapting to new issues arising in specific groups of countries or globally. The objectives of this paper are twofold: to review current international thinking on what regulatory framework is needed to develop a financial sector that is stable, yet efficient, and provides proper access to households and firms; and to review the key experiences regarding international financial architecture initiatives, with a special focus on issues arising for developing countries. The paper outlines a number of areas of current debate: the special role of banks, competition policy, consumer protection, harmonization of rules-across products, within markets, and globally-and the adaptation and legitimacy of international standards to the circumstances facing developing countries. It concludes with some areas where more research would be useful.

Book Cross border Banking

Download or read book Cross border Banking written by Gerard Caprio and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-border banking, while having the potential for a more efficient financial sector, also creates potential challenges for bank supervisors and regulators. This volume discusses topics that include: the landscape of cross-border bank activity, the resulting competitive implications, emerging challenges for prudential regulation, and more. Cross-border banking, while having the potential for a more efficient financial sector, also creates potential challenges for bank supervisors and regulators. It requires cooperation by regulatory authorities across jurisdictions and a clear delineation of authority and responsibility. That delineation is typically not present and regulatory authorities often have significantly different incentives to respond when cross-border-active banks encounter difficulties. Most of these issues have only begun to be seriously evaluated. This volume, one of the first attempts to address these issues, brings together experts and regulators from different countries. The wide range of topics discussed include: the current landscape of cross-border bank activity, the resulting competitive implications, emerging challenges for prudential regulation, safety net concerns, failure resolution issues, and the potential future evolution of international banking.

Book Internationalization of Banks

Download or read book Internationalization of Banks written by Federica Sist and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews banking internationalization by considering the new paradigms of globalization. The author primarily analyses why and how banks internationalize through equity deals, and the effect of regulation and market integration on the formation of deals, which allows authorities to manage the banking structure. This is a unique work that describes the relevance of the ownership model and cultural features of the partners and the key factors that help in choosing the market in which the banks bring activities abroad. The book addresses market characteristics, and new scenarios that should impact banks’ internationalization strategies and ability to achieve success in deals that capture the attention of both researchers and practitioners.

Book The Internationalization of Financial Services in Asia

Download or read book The Internationalization of Financial Services in Asia written by Stijn Claessens and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: April 1998 Asian countries should consider the benefits of opening their financial service sectors more quickly-at the same time that they are liberalizing capital accounts and deregulating domestic financial markets. The internationalization of financial services-eliminating discrimination between the treatment of foreign and domestic providers of financial services and removing barriers to the cross-border provision of financial services-is of global interest, especially in Asia. Most of Asia limits the entry of foreign financial firms much more than otherwise comparable countries do. Empirical evidence for Asia and elsewhere suggests that this slows down institutional development and that, as a result, it costs more to provide financial services. Asian countries could benefit from accelerating the opening of the financial services sector, in conjunction with the further liberalization of capital accounts and domestic deregulation of financial markets. Apart from other benefits, internationalization helps build more robust, efficient financial systems by introducing international practices and standards; by improving the quality, efficiency, and breadth of financial services; and by allowing more stable sources of funds. The ongoing WTO negotiation of financial services under GATS gives countries the opportunity to commit to opening their financial sectors. Safeguards can be built into the process, and the liberalization can be phased in gradually. This paper-a product of the Economic Policy Division, Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network-is part of a larger effort in the network to study financial reform in developing countries. The paper was written during the summer of 1997, before the East Asia financial crisis and before the conclusion of the WTO negotiations in December 1997.
