Book Mergers and Productivity

Download or read book Mergers and Productivity written by Steven N. Kaplan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mergers and Productivity offers probing analyses of high-profile mergers in a variety of industries. Focusing on specific acquisitions, it illustrates the remarkable range of contingencies involved in any merger attempt. The authors clearly establish each merger's presumed objectives and the potential costs and benefits of the acquisition, and place it within the context of the broader industry. Striking conclusions that emerge from these case studies are that merger and acquisition activities were associated with technological or regulatory shocks, and that a merger's success or failure was dependent upon the acquirer's thorough understanding of the target, its corporate culture, and its workforce and wage structures prior to acquisition. Sifting through a wealth of carefully gathered evidence, these papers capture the richness, the complexity, and the economic intangibles inherent in contemporary merger activity in a way that large-scale studies of mergers cannot.

Book The Effects of Privatization and Consolidation on Bank Productivity

Download or read book The Effects of Privatization and Consolidation on Bank Productivity written by Elisabetta Fiorentino and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian and German banking systems shared similar characteristics early in the 1990s but have evolved in different directions since then: Italy privatized its publicly-owned banks while Germany has maintained a large share of state-owned savings banks. Contemporaneously, banks in both markets engaged heavily in mergers and acquisitions. We analyze how these activities have affected banks' productivity in the period 1994-2004, differentiating between technical change, efficiency change and scale economies. We find that privatized banks experienced a significant increase in productivity, especially if they subsequently merged with other banks. German banks were still able to increase their productivity through consolidation.

Book Bank Consolidation and Performance

Download or read book Bank Consolidation and Performance written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine a large panel of more than 100 banks from Argentina to study the effects of bank consolidation on performance between December 1995 and December 2000, a period of heavy bank consolidation and relative calm. Overall, we find a positive and significant effect of bank consolidation on bank performance. Bank returns increase with consolidation, and insolvency risk is reduced. Additionally, the study suggests that mergers and privatizations have a beneficial effect on bank returns. The effects of a bank acquisition on return on equity is, however, negative. Acquisitions do not seem to have any effect on risk-adjusted returns. The study also finds that a bank's insolvency risk is reduced significantly through mergers and privatization and is unrelated to bank acquisitions.

Book On Bank Consolidation in a Currency Union

Download or read book On Bank Consolidation in a Currency Union written by Fabio Di Vittorio and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper focuses on the impact of diversification on bank performance and how consolidation through mergers and acquisitions (M&A) affects the banking sector’s stability in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU). The paper finds that a lower level of loan portfolio diversification explains higher non-performing loans and earnings volatility of indigenous banks, as compared to foreign competitors in the ECCU. We then simulate bank mergers both within and across ECCU countries by combining individual banks’ balance sheets. The simulation shows that a typical indigenous bank could better diversify against its idiosyncratic risk by merging with other banks across the border. In addition, we point out that M&A, leading to a more asymmetric banking sector, may increase systemic risk.

Book Bank Consolidation and Productivity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of the government-induced banking consolidation on banks' productivity in Nigeria by analyzing changes in total factor productivity (TFP) between 2002 and 2011. The methodology adopted in carrying out the study is Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) generated Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI). It was found that in spite of the fact that the changes are by fiat, TFP shows growth trends on the market average, market categories and individual bank levels. The result also indicated that both constant return to scale (CRS) and variable return to scale (VRS) technologies returned the same growth averages of 8%. This is an important indication that uniformly the market is operating with similar technology in information technology (IT) and computerization. It is therefore recommended that the deposit money banks (DMBs) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should enhance mass migration to the modern banking system largely through the reduced costs of financial intermediation to sustain the growth trends. The regulatory authority should also be concerned with desirable banking culture shifts not only to keep efficiency and productivity on upward trending, but in order to succeed in various monetary policies path-through. To this end, it is also recommended that currency outside the banking sector should be depleted to enhance banking culture towards zero productivity slacks with banks hovering around their most productive scale size (MPSS) threshold.

Book Bank Mergers Acquisitions

Download or read book Bank Mergers Acquisitions written by Yakov Amihud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-02-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the financial services industry becomes increasingly international, the more narrowly defined and historically protected national financial markets become less significant. Consequently, financial institutions must achieve a critical size in order to compete. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions analyses the major issues associated with the large wave of bank mergers and acquisitions in the 1990's. While the effects of these changes have been most pronounced in the commercial banking industry, they also have a profound impact on other financial institutions: insurance firms, investment banks, and institutional investors. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions is divided into three major sections: A general and theoretical background to the topic of bank mergers and acquisitions; the effect of bank mergers on efficiency and shareholders' wealth; and regulatory and legal issues associated with mergers of financial institutions. It brings together contributions from leading scholars and high-level practitioners in economics, finance and law.

Book Efficiency and Productivity Effects of Bank Mergers

Download or read book Efficiency and Productivity Effects of Bank Mergers written by Anthony N. Rezitis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acquisition activity on the efficiency and total factor productivity of Greek banks. A stochastic output distance function is used to construct a generalized output Malmquist productivity index based on the methodological framework of Orea [Orea, L., 2002. Parametric decomposition of a Generalized Malmquist Productivity Index. Journal of Productivity Analysis 18, 5-22]. The results of the present study indicate that the effects of mergers and acquisition on technical efficiency and total factor productivity growth of Greek banks are rather negative. In particular, the technical efficiency of merger banks decreased in the period after merging, while that of non-merger banks increased over the same period. Furthermore the decrease in total factor productivity for merger banks for the period after merging can be attributed to an increase in technical inefficiency and the disappearance of economies of scale, while technical change remained unchanged compared to the pre-merging level.

Book Local Market Consolidation and Bank Productive Efficiency

Download or read book Local Market Consolidation and Bank Productive Efficiency written by Douglas D. Evanoff and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent banking literature has evaluated the impact of mergers on the efficiency of the merging parties [e.g., Rhoades (1993), Shaffer (1993), Fixler and Zieschang (1993)]. Similarly, there has been analysis of the impact of eliminating bank entry restrictions on the average performance of banks [Jayaratne and Strahan (1998)]. The evidence suggests that acquiring banks are typically more efficient than are acquired banks, resulting in the potential for the new combined organization to be more efficient and, therefore, for the merger to be welfare enhancing. The evidence also suggests, however, that these potential gains are often not realized. This has led some to question the benefits resulting from the recent increase in bank merger activity. We take a somewhat more comprehensive and micro-oriented approach and evaluate the impact of actual and potential competition resulting from market-entry mergers and reductions in entry barriers on bank efficiency. In particular, in addition to the efficiency gains realized by the parties involved in a bank merger, economic theory argues that additional efficiency gains should result from the impact of the merger on the degree of local market competition. We therefore examine the impact of increased competition resulting from mergers and acquisitions on the productive efficiency of incumbent banks. Our findings are consistent with economic theory: As competition increases as a result of entry or the creation of a more viable local competitor, the incumbent banks respond by increasing their level of cost efficiency. We find this efficiency increase to be in addition to any efficiency gains resulting from increases in potential competition occurring with the initial elimination of certain entry barriers. Thus, consistent with economic theory, new entrants and reductions in entry barriers lead incumbent firms to increase their productive efficiency to enable them to be viable in the more competitive environment. Studies evaluating the impact of bank mergers on the efficiency of the combining parties alone may be overlooking the most significant welfare enhancing aspect of merger activity. We do not find evidence of profit efficiency gains. In fact, the mergers are associated with decreases in profit efficiency; perhaps indicating that revenues may also be competed away from incumbents as a result of mergers.

Book Bank Consolidation Internationalization and Conglomeration

Download or read book Bank Consolidation Internationalization and Conglomeration written by Mr.Gianni De Nicolo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper documents global trends in bank activity, consolidation, internationalization, and financial firm conglomeration, and explores the extent to which financial firm risk and systemic risk potential in banking are related to consolidation and conglomeration. We find that while there is a substantial upward trend in conglomeration globally, consolidation and internationalization exhibit uneven patterns across world regions. Trends in consolidation and conglomeration indicate increased risk profiles for large, conglomerate financial firms, and higher levels of systemic risk potential for more concentrated banking systems. We outline research directions aimed at explaining why bank consolidation and conglomeration do not necessarily yield either safer financial firms or more resilient banking systems.
