Book Hindustani Traces in Malay Ghazal

Download or read book Hindustani Traces in Malay Ghazal written by Gisa Jähnichen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘A song, so old and yet still famous’ is a Malay expression of admiration for an exotic singing style, a musical contemplation on the beauty of nature, God, and love. The ghazal exists in manifold cultures all over Asia, Africa, and Southern Europe, and is intimately connected to Islam and its periphery. In each region, ghazals have been shaped into other expressions using imported features and transforming them into ‘local art’. In the Malay world, ghazals come in various shapes and with different meanings. ‘The song, so old’ is the song that came before the proliferation of mass media. The first ghazals that were heard in the Malay world might have been those ghazals performed by Hindustani musicians traveling in Southeast Asia. However, later on, the ghazal’s development was additionally triggered by mass media, with technological progress enhancing change in urban entertainment and introducing new sources of further adaptations. In this context, the second half line of the lyrics mentioned, ‘and yet still famous’, means that despite being old, the song is highly regarded as an art in itself. Malay ghazals are still attractive and musically demanding. They were traditionally not performed for mass appeal, but, rather, for a small knowledgeable audience that valued musical refinement and taste.

Book excerpt: Though his father, Bujang, loves him, Nuing runs away from home because the people of the longhouse reject him. Following a failed war expedition, Bunsu Jugam, the spirit of the youngest sun bear, rescues Nuing and brings him into the invisible world where he tells him that Bujang has been kidnapped by K’lansat demons. The python spirit of his father’s trophy head spits on Nuing and causes his skin to burn and swell until he looks like a deformed rhinocerous. He manages to rescue his father and on their return they are attacked by four men. Bujang kills one, and Nuing three. When the thick skin finally comes off and the people learns that their hero is Nuing, they grudgingly accepts him back, believing that the curse of his birth is nullified by the power of the three heads he took. Iban Journey is volume two in this unique series of fantasy fiction — that includes Iban Dream — in which author Golda Mowe, herself an Iban from Borneo, uses real beliefs, taboos and terminology of the Iban (a longhouse-dwelling indigenous group of people from Borneo who, until very recently, were renowned for practising headhunting) to weave epic tales of good versus evil.

Book One Hundred and One Things Malay

Download or read book One Hundred and One Things Malay written by GHULAM-SARWAR YOUSOF and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, dedicated by its author to all who understand or do not understand the Malays as well as to those who wish to know them better, provides a rare and insightful entry into those elements that best define and represent the Malaysian Malay community. Fully aware of the fact that the Malays, as a relatively small race in global terms, has been influenced in terms of their traditional beliefs as well as cultural practices by elements from India, Indonesia as well as the World of Islam, the author yet manages to successfully indicate what makes the Malays unique when it comes to their identity. In essence, he catches the spirit or soul of the Malays. The features selected for this purpose have been defined or described in a relatively uncomplicated manner and in simple terms so that the work is accessible to non-expert readers both at home and abroad. It makes an interesting and almost casual entry into what may be defined as Malay. The photographs and illustrations provided add value to the work, which in many ways is a unique piece of writing.
