Book The Implications of Climate and Sea Level Change for Bangladesh

Download or read book The Implications of Climate and Sea Level Change for Bangladesh written by R.A. Warrick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the "greenhouse effect" and "global climate change" have been the subjects of scientific scrutiny for many decades, only recently have they received widespread public attention. Two major events helped generate this attention. First, in 1990 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its findings on the science, impacts and policy implications of climate change. The findings of the IPCC, prepared and reviewed extensively by the world's leading experts in the field, confirmed that the increasing atmospheric concentrations of "greenhouse" gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and the chlorofluorocarbons, could cause the world to warm and sea level to rise. Second, in 1992 the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) inRio de Janeiro focussed the attention of the world's national governments, as well as organisations and individuals outside the governments, on the threat of global climate change. The Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), signed by nations at UNCED, reflects both the concern about the effects of climate change and the urgent need for action to prevent or reduce its potential impacts, particularly with respect to the vulnerable developing countries of the world. Bangladesh ratified the FCCC on 15 April 1994. The countries that have signed and ratified the FCCC are obligated to report to the Conference of the Parties (CoP) to the Convention on a number of inter related issues.

Book Forests to Climate Change Mitigation

Download or read book Forests to Climate Change Mitigation written by Md. Danesh Miah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the effect of global climate change is clear to all. It is clearly dangerous in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The industrial revolution caused major changes in technology, socio-economy and cultures in the late 18th and early 19th century, beginning in Britain and spreading throughout the world. The technology dominated economy was mostly dependent on energy produced from fossil fuel, which still holds true today. It is well known that fossil fuel burning has increased the GHGs to the atmosphere, thus creating global warming. Among the GHGs, the concentration of CO2 has been confirmed as the largest. Terrestrial ecosystems are clearly influencing the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are constantly entering and leaving the atmosphere. Actively growing trees and other plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, combine it with water through photosynthesis and create sugars and more stable carbohydrates. Through this process, trees capture and store atmospheric CO2 in vegetation, soils and biomass products. The Kyoto Protocol, in 1997, explored a flexible mechanism, CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) where Annex I and non-Annex I parties interact for climate change mitigation. Forestry activities have been considered important in the arena of climate change as they act both as a sink and sources of carbon. The purpose of this book is to highlight the means of efficiently reducing global warming through forestry options in Bangladesh and the positive implications of CDM.

Book Climate Change in Bangladesh

Download or read book Climate Change in Bangladesh written by Harun Rasid and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change in Bangladesh: Confronting Impending Disasters is a comprehensive analysis of climate change impacts on Bangladesh, followed by a review of measures for confronting the manifested threats of climate change on the people and environment of Bangladesh. Using an integrative approach, the authors blend their own work on indigenous adjustments to climatic hazards in Bangladesh with an analysis of the role of modern engineering intervention and disaster management policies in alleviating these hazards. There is also an emphasis on the environment and people of coastal Bangladesh who are at risk of inundation due to global warming–induced sea level rise. Thus, in addition to analyzing main climatic disasters at some length—tropical cyclones (hurricanes), floods, droughts, and sea level rise—key topics of human dimensions of climate change include climate change victims, climate refugees, climate justice, public policies on climate change, and a sample of adaptation measures for living with the rising sea levels.

Book Climate Change

Download or read book Climate Change written by Rafique Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central issue discussed in this book is what is now widely known as "Global Warming and Climate Change". It started in the early 1980s as the "greenhouse effect"--Warming of the atmosphere due to the absorption of earth's outgoing long wave radiation by the greenhouse gases. The level of coverage that the western mass media devoted to global warming was low prior to 1988. But interest increased significantly after the U.S. drought in 1988, and related U.S. Senate testimony by Dr. James E. Hansen, NASA's chief climate scientist, who attributed the abnormally hot weather to global warming. --Book.

Book Bangladesh Confronts Climate Change

Download or read book Bangladesh Confronts Climate Change written by Manoj Roy and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in a low-lying and densely populated country on the front line of climate change, Bangladeshis are taking a lead in adapting to rising temperatures and campaigning to limit climate change. Global warming will worsen this country's existing environmental problems - causing a rise in sea level, more flooding and stronger, more damaging cyclones. Bangladeshis know what is coming, and how to respond, because they are already effectively combating environmental and social challenges. Cyclone shelters and warning systems have cut the fatality rate dramatically; new varieties of rice have raised nutrition levels; women's education has slowed population growth; land is being raised to respond to sea level rise. Bangladeshis will keep their heads above water, but at huge costs. Will the industrialised countries curb their greenhouse gas emissions and pay for the damage they have already done?

Book Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol s Clean Development Mechanism

Download or read book Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol s Clean Development Mechanism written by Margie Orford and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming and climate change pose a dire threat to life. The Kyoto Protocol is the UN treaty committing signatories to dealing with climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is a non-technical account of what inspired people to transform the dry language of this international climate change treaty into measurable improvements in people's lives in four countries (Brazil, Bangladesh, Indonesia and South Africa). These stories come to life through a kaleidoscope of photographs and children's artworks.
