The ‘Index’ allows navigation for the reader who has specific interests to investigate through the fabric of the report. The ‘Text’ is structured to 4 levels beginning with the primary, headline driven, main body content followed by relevant Wikipedia extracts, indented in purple, for those choosing to read further into a particular topic through to hyperlinked Wikipedia - Full Article text within the book and in turn out to the website itself. Download or read book Poetry written by Ambrose Bierce and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2022-09-26T19:15:51Z with total page 1170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While better known for his short stories and his satirical The Devil’s Dictionary, American journalist Ambrose Bierce was also a prolific writer of serious, comic, sentimental, and satirical poetry, verse, and epigrams. Bierce’s poetry contains similar themes as much of his other work. His bitter cynicism on human nature is exemplified in “Montefiore,” “Incurable,” and “The Man Born Blind.” Echoes of the American Civil War, in which Bierce fought for the Union, appear in works such as “At a ‘National Encampment,’ ” “The Death of Grant,” and “The Hesitating Veteran.” Religion is not spared, and he addresses it in “The Lord’s Prayer on a Coin,” “Religion,” and “Theosophistry.” He even wrote several short satirical dramas in verse, addressing, among other topics, Prohibition (“Metempsychosis”), the railroads (“The Birth of the Rail”), and Chinese expulsion in California (“ ‘Peaceful Expulsion’ ”). His poems such as “A Vision of Doom,” “Avalon,” “The Passing Show,” and “Invocation” (one of his most well-known poems) capture his metaphysical outlook and pessimism. He even pens a fine elegy to his cat in “In Memoriam.” This comprehensive collection contains much of Bierce’s poetical work from multiple sources: his early poems and epigrams published in The Fiend’s Delight under his pseudonym “Dod Grile”; his poetry collections Shapes of Clay and Black Beetles in Amber, as edited and revised by him in his Collected Works; his various “ante-mortem” epitaphs on individuals who had not yet died (“On Stone”); his collection of hundreds of epigrams, also published in his Collected Works; and several uncollected poems, published in various newspapers. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Download or read book The Unknown Battles That Lie Beyond the Grave written by Sylvester Alex Bosch and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The red-hot saucy chatter was that on the day Manku rescued Joanna from the sewer hole, she wasn’t wearing any knickers. It was therefore alleged the four men got more than they bargained for during the rescue mission. Trump suddenly woke up as though from a slumber. He was no longer in the rough and choppy waters. He soon realised that his body was different and that he wasn’t alone. As he stood there in awe and disbelief, suddenly, he was surrounded by seven individuals adorned in bodies similar to his. He responded that for his first mission, he was inclined to pick Combat Ghosts from one class only, from the class of the dead evil men and women. It was just the beginning. He was in for a rude shock!
Download or read book Pigmalion S Reverie a Korean S Misreading of Major American and British Poetry written by Kyu-myoung Lee and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading is not an unusual or unfamiliar thing. It must be the first condition of life. Though illiterate or literate, humans should read things, letters, incidents, and situations according to each level of recognition so that they can survive surroundings under the brutal principle of natural selection. Namely, reading must be a reaction for survival. By the way, there are many kinds of readings in the literary world: close reading that new criticism favored, authentic reading that modernism based on elitism pursued, and misreading, as suggested by Harold Bloom, that wayward postmodernism allows. Whichever reading we may choose, it would be innocent because any reading must linger on the level of the parable of Platos cave, in which humans could read the dim shadows of things reflected on the wall. In this sense, Blooms term is very honest rather than being postmodern or deconstructive. Thus, humans cant read the existence of thing itself. What they can read at best is nothing but the indirect, misunderstood fruit through the medium of language according to F. Saussures linguistics. Frankly, humans were born to tell a lie about thing itself, which would be the truth or fate of human existence. Accordingly, however, meticulously we may read poems that would be no better than misreading. Hence, my book has a naive aim that worldwide readers can freely read esoteric English poetry by famed poets regardless of these or those ways of reading, and the interpretations of English poetry dont belong to those professional or authoritarian but to reading public. Furthermore, through reading this subjective criticism on English poetry, worldwide readers can feel interested in how a Korean is reading it. Thus, this book can dedicate itself to the dialectic convergence between the Eastern and the Western ideal.

Download or read book Poems of Ambrose Bierce written by Ambrose Bierce and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambrose Bierce is one of the most colorful figures in American literary history. A writer whose Devil's Dictionary remains the delight of misanthropes and fans of satire throughout the English-speaking world, he was also a master of the short story form. From the late 1860s through the early 1900s, he worked as a journalist, gaining wide renown in the 1890s and 1900s as a satirical columnist for William Randolph Hearst's chain of newspapers. In 1913 Bierce traveled to Mexico and joined Pancho Villa's army as an observer. He disappeared late that year and his fate has been a matter of dispute ever since. The poems that Bierce wrote throughout his career are less well known than his stories, journalistic pieces, and aphoristic observations on human folly. Nevertheless, his work as a poet, as critic Donald Sidney-Fryer has argued, "clearly merits the attention of the discriminating lover and student of poetry." Varied in form and subject matter, most of his poems are (not surprisingly) satires. This volume contains a generous selection of Bierce's poems; they are alternately ironic, melancholy, bitter, and wickedly amusing. There are also fifteen essays and letters on poetry, poets, and such topics as "Wit and Humor" and "The Passing of Satire." Certainly there have been few authors more intimately familiar with wit and satire than the brilliant, iconoclastic Bierce. As editor M. E. Grenander makes plain in her introduction, both are abundantly present in this collection of "some of the most remarkable verse in American literary history." M. E. Grenander is a Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Internationally recognized as aleading Bierce scholar, she is the author of Ambrose Bierce. Her articles on Bierce have appeared in the Western Humanities Review, American Literary Realism, Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, and other publications.
