Book Chasing Bandits in the Badlands

Download or read book Chasing Bandits in the Badlands written by Bob Breen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1993, the Australian government sent just under one thousand young men and women to serve under American command in a violent, impoverished, starving society. Most males over the age of twelve either carried or had access to a gun, and most Somali men had been fighting a vicious civil war for years. Australian soldiers and their teams had to gain control of the streets of Baidoa and surrounding towns. This contest was not 'find, fight and kill' warfare. There was no decisive victory or defeat. The aim was to detect 'the bad boys' and deter and de-escalate their violence rather than escalate hostilities to success through 'body count'. This mode of operation was not community policing by soldiers either. It involved adjusting attitudes forcefully and assuring uncomfortable consequences for bad behaviour and ultimately lethal responses to armed challenges. The world looked over their shoulders. Corporals and diggers had to make split-second decisions to open or hold fire. Holding fire when provoked by punks constituted disciplined professional performance. Opening fire before understanding the situation, especially against unarmed provocateurs, constituted unprofessional conduct and possible condemnation, even criminal charges. These young Australians carried the international reputation of Australia and its army on their shoulders. Their actions would either enhance that reputation or create controversy, negative publicity and, potentially, international embarrassment and condemnation. After asserting a presence through rigorous patrolling and search-and-clear urban and rural operations, the Australians deterred a range of marauders from interfering with UN and NGO humanitarian activities, keeping expatriate staff safe and killing and wounding several Somali shooters in surprise clashes. After adjusting their own attitudes to balance aggression and compassion, fight leaders and their diggers forcefully adjusted Somali attitudes, secured a stalemate, and then took control for the time they were in Somalia Australian soldiers individually and collectively helped a traumatised society needing a 'fair go' and gave ordinary Somali men, women and children trying to survive a little bit of hope.

Book Wars of Latin America 1948 1982

Download or read book Wars of Latin America 1948 1982 written by René De La Pedraja and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues the narrative begun by the author in Wars of Latin America, 1899-1941. It provides a clear and readable description of military combat occurring in Latin America from 1948 to the start of 1982. (In an unusual peaceful lull, Latin America experienced no wars from 1942 to 1947.) Although the text concentrates on combat narrative, matters of politics, business, and international relations appear as necessary to explain the wars. The author draws on many previously unknown sources to provide information never before published. The book traces the many insurgencies in Latin America as well as conventional wars. Among the highlights are the chapters on the Cuban and Nicaraguan insurrections and on the Bay of Pigs invasion. One goal of the text is to explain why, of the many insurgencies appearing in Latin America, only those in Cuba and Nicaragua were successful in overthrowing governments. The book also helps explain why even unsuccessful insurgencies have survived for decades, as has happened in Colombia and Peru. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book Christopher Columbus His Agent Harry

Download or read book Christopher Columbus His Agent Harry written by Sirtony and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COLUMBUS AND HARRY is modern at the core as well as the surface. How does it do this? By focusing on the part of the story we never hear about - - how C.C. raised money for the trip. Thus, the script becomes a sly take on the age-old Hollywood shuffle - - panhandling the studio head (a.k.a. the King) for funds to make your project (the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria) a reality. What hip moviegoer couldn't relate to this? If we go a little deeper we can see that Columbus and Harry are in many ways like the classic pair of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Columbus is the dreamer who wants to bend reality to his will, while Harry is the realist who helps (sometimes unwillingly) with that bending. This makes COLUMBUS AND HARRY especially enticing. After all, who hasn't had a dream that was shouted down or laughed at? And unlike most people, Columbus sticks to his guns and makes his dreams come true. In short, COLUMBUS AND HARRY not only excels at being modern - - it excels at being universal.

Book excerpt: New York Times–bestselling author Stephen Becker’s “breathlessly exciting” (Cosmopolitan) post-WWII adventure about an ex-marine on the run for his life. That summer they hanged a fat man at the Western gate as a warning and example to all. Kao was a traitor, a thief, a pimp, a black marketeer—and Jake Dodds’s partner. So what if he traded stolen military supplies with the Japanese, Jake wants to know. He never cheated me. But 1947 Peking is a savage, cutthroat city, and the United States Marine Corps sergeant is too busy saving his own skin to put up a fight over Kao’s fate. Jake served his country with honor in World War II, but when he knocks an American brigadier general through a barroom window, no amount of battlefield scars or combat medals will save him from prison. So he sets out across the Gobi Desert with a caravan of Kao’s illicit goods—and plunges into a world of violence and treachery that will take every ounce of his strength and intelligence to survive. Pursued by Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist Army and a bandit chieftain named Tiger’s Assistant Demon, Jake disappears into the mountains—but the chaos of postwar China is inescapable, and “peace” has never been a part of this two-fisted adventurer’s vocabulary. Gripping and rich with cinematic detail, The Chinese Bandit will please history buffs and thriller fans alike and “keep readers turning pages through the night” (Los Angeles Times). The Chinese Bandit is the 1st book in the Far East Trilogy, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book The Limits of Peacekeeping Volume 4 The Official History of Australian Peacekeeping Humanitarian and Post Cold War Operations

Download or read book The Limits of Peacekeeping Volume 4 The Official History of Australian Peacekeeping Humanitarian and Post Cold War Operations written by Jean Bou and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 1273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Limits of Peacekeeping highlights the Australian government's peacekeeping efforts in Africa and the Americas from 1992 to 2005. Changing world power structures and increased international cooperation saw a boom in Australia's peacekeeping operations between 1991 and 1995. The initial optimism of this period proved to be misplaced, as the limits of the United Nations and the international community to resolve deep-seated problems became clear. There were also limits on how many missions a middle-sized country like Australia could support. Restricted by the size of the armed forces and financial and geographic constraints, peacekeeping was always a secondary task to ensuring the defence of Australia. Faith in the effectiveness of peacekeeping reduced significantly, and the election of the Howard Coalition Government in 1996 confined peacekeeping missions to the near region from 1996–2001. This volume is an authoritative and compelling history of Australia's changing attitudes towards peacekeeping.
