Book Learning Basic Genetics with Interactive Computer Programs

Download or read book Learning Basic Genetics with Interactive Computer Programs written by Charles C. Tseng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, genetics laboratory exercises at the university level focus on mono- and dihybrid crosses and phenotypic analysis—exercises under traditional time, materials, and process constraints. Lately, molecular techniques such as gene cloning, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and bioinformatics are being included in many teaching laboratories—where affordable. Human chromosome analysis, when present at all, has often been restricted to simple identification of chromosomes by number, through the usual “cut-and-paste” method. Although several online karyotyping (chromosome identification) programs have become available, they are not meaningful for studying the dynamics of the chromosome system, nor do they help students understand genetics as a discipline. The software that accompanies this book has been shown to be an ideal tool for learning about genetics, which requires a combination of understanding, conceptualization, and practical experience.

Students following the HNC and HND courses will find this book essential reading, as it covers the core material they will be following through the duration of their course. Knowledge-check questions and activities are included throughout, resulting in a clear and straightforward text which encourages independent study. Like the syllabus itself, this book is ideal for students progressing to HNC / HND from GNVQs, as well as A-Level and BTEC National, with content designed to cover the requirements of students following General Computing, Software Engineering and Business IT courses.

Book Smart Automotive Mobility

Download or read book Smart Automotive Mobility written by Gerrit Meixner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-16 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on smart results in the field of smart automotive mobility concentrating on (semi-)autonomous cars. The results are based on 5 recently finished public-funded research projects with a budget of over 15 million Euro. Providing insights into the next generation of personalized mobility on the road the authors discuss personalized, adaptive cooperative systems for highly automated cars and how they can be developed in a human-centered way. Furthermore, the book reports on a cooperative driver-vehicle interaction. How can the driver and the vehicle support each other? What are their best skills and how can they benefit from each other? It also gives novel insights on intuitive steering gestures on the steering wheel which initiate maneuvers to be executed by the automation, and to be supervised by, influenced or interrupted by the driver. The book finishes with information on a cooperative laser beam system which improves the communication between the different road participants to optimize the road safety of tomorrow. Smart Automotive Mobility: Reliable Technology for the Mobile Human is an ideal source for researchers, students and practitioners working in the area of intelligent systems for the automotive industry. It gives valuable and condensed information from multi-million Euro research projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research series deals with the major terrestrial, algal, and siliceous indicators used in paleolimnology. Other volumes deal with the acquisition and archiving of lake sediment cores, chronological techniques, and large-scale basin analysis methods (Volume 1), physical and geochemical parameters and methods (Volume 2), zoological techniques (Volume 4), and statistical and data handling methods (Volume 5). These monographs will provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. Although the chapters in these volumes target mainly lacustrine settings, many of the techniques described can also be readily applied to fluvial, glacial, marine, estuarine, and peatland environments.

Book Manual of Geospatial Science and Technology

Download or read book Manual of Geospatial Science and Technology written by John D. Bossler and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-11-22 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professionals in local and national government and in the private sector frequently need to draw on Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS), often in an integrated manner. This manual shows a hands-on operator how to work across the range of geospatial science and technology, whether as a user or as a contractor of services employing these technologies, and without either specialist education or substantial experience. The manual covers the fundamentals of each of these topical areas, providing the requisite mathematics, computer science and physics necessary to understand how the technologies work, assuming some elementary background in calculus and physics. It also shows how the technologies can be used together and focuses on their commonalities. A number of applications such as mapping and environmental modeling are presented, and a website accompanies the book.

Book Risk Analysis in Forest Management

Download or read book Risk Analysis in Forest Management written by Klaus von Gadow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the long-term planning horizons and the great variety of natural, economic, and operational hazards affecting forest ecosystems, uncertainty and multiple risk are typical aspects of forest management. Applications of risk analysis are surprisingly rare, in spite of the rich assortment of sophisticated forest planning tools that are available today. The objective of this particular volume within the book series Managing Forest Ecosystems is to present state-of-the-art research results, concepts, and techniques regarding the assessment and evaluation of natural hazards and the analysis of risk and uncertainty relating to forest management. Various aspects of risk analysis are covered, including examples of specific modelling tools. The book is divided into three sections covering ecological perspectives, applications in engineering and planning, and methods applicable to economics and policy.
