Book Southeast Asian Tribes Minorities and Nations Volume 1

Download or read book Southeast Asian Tribes Minorities and Nations Volume 1 written by Peter Kunstadter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major source of political instability in Southeast Asia has been ethnic diversity and the lack of congruence between ethnic distributions and national boundaries. Here twenty specialists base their papers largely on original field work in Burma, China, India, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Contrary to the usual picture of tribal people as isolated, homogeneous, stable, and conservative, the papers show tribesmen are often a dynamic force in the modern history of Southeast Asian states. Descriptions of tribal life and government programs, together with charts, tables, maps, and photographs give a wealth of data. Originally published in 1967. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Family Life in a Northern Thai Village

Download or read book Family Life in a Northern Thai Village written by Sulamith Heins Potter and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Potter's 'humanistic narrative' probes family social structure and social organization in Chiangmai, a Northern Thai village .... a solid, informative, and very interesting and alive picture."--Library Journal "Gives us a rare inside view of daily life in a northern Thai village . . . The reader gets a feeling of life, pleasure, jealously, anger, pain, and death that is seldom discussed in the anthropological literature."--Asia "Rejecting the traditional 'loosely structured' theory of the Thai family, Potter suggests a system that is female--centered with structurally significant consanguineal ties between women rather than men. This alternative not only explains the data presented but offers a new way of looking at comparative kinship." --Intercom "The dynamic interplay between the structural dominance of women and the ideological dominance of men is vividly brought out, challenging earlier, and possibly male-biased, perspectives on Northern Thai family structure."--Population and Development Review "Potter succeeds in presenting ethnographic material in a lively, humanistically oriented manner. By the time we have encountered three generations of Plenitudes at home in their courtyard . . . we know them as individuals as we as representatives of an exotic culture. . . . Potter presents individual portraits alongside this vivid picture of family and social structure, communal and individual economic activity, political factionalism, and religious observance . . . this book stands as a challenge to cross-cultural psychology."--Contemporary Psychology "Dr. Potter's study is highly readable and will be of interest to the general public as well as to scholars."--Asian Student

Book Monks Money and Morality

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christoph Brumann
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2021-04-22
  • ISBN : 1350213780
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Monks Money and Morality written by Christoph Brumann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrantly engaging contemporary Buddhist lives, this book focuses on the material and financial relations of contemporary monks, temples, and laypeople. It shows that rather than being peripheral, economic exchanges are key to religious debate in Buddhist societies. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in countries ranging from India to Japan, including all three major Buddhist traditions, the book addresses the flows of goods and services between clergy and laity, the management of resources, the treatment of money, and the role of the state in temple economies. Along with documenting ritual and economic practices, these accounts deal with the moral challenges that Buddhist adherents are facing today, thereby bringing lived experience to the study of an often-romanticized religion.

Book Fields of Desire

Download or read book Fields of Desire written by Holly High and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new book, High argues that poverty reduction policies are formulated and implemented in fields of desire. Drawing on psychoanalytic understandings of desire, she shows that such programs circulate around the question of what is lacking. Far from rational responses to measures of need, then, the politics of poverty are unconscious, culturally expressed, mutually contradictory, and sometimes contrary to self-interest. Based on long-term fieldwork in a Lao village that has been the subject of multiple poverty reduction and development programs, High's account looks at implementation on the ground. While these efforts were laudable in their aims of reducing poverty, they often failed to achieve their objectives. Local people received them with suspicion and disillusionment. Nevertheless, poverty reduction policies continued to be renewed by planners and even desired locally. High relates this to the force of aspirations among rural Lao, ambivalent understandings of power and the "post-rebellious" moment in contemporary Laos.

Book Virtuosity Charisma and Social Order

Download or read book Virtuosity Charisma and Social Order written by Ilana Friedrich-Silber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comparative macrosociological study of the interaction between religious virtuosi and society in two civilizations: traditional Theravada Buddhism and Medieval Catholicism. Merging Weberian sociology with the Maussian tradition of gift-analysis, and criticizing the neglect of meaning in current comparative historical sociology, the author also argues the need for a multidimensional approach capable of addressing the part played by religious orientations in shaping the institutional strength and ideological power of religious elites in the historical framework of the Great Traditions.

Book Buddhism and Society

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 1982-05-27
  • ISBN : 9780520046726

Download or read book Buddhism and Society written by Melford E. Spiro and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1982-05-27 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current Western interest in Buddhism and other Eastern religions is--among other reasons--both the result of and the stimulation for an entire library of books purporting to bring the Wisdom of the East to an audience for whom the wisdom of the West has failed. This book is not an example of that genre. It is an attempt to interpret Buddhism in the light of some current theories about religion. As a work of scholarship, rather than a homiletic tract or an apologetic treatise, its aim is to understand Buddhism as one historical variant of the generic human attempt to find meaning and hope in a sacred order that transcends the mundane order of existence; its aime is not to encourage or discourage either a devotional or a soteriological interest in Buddhism.

Book Holy Things

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nathan McGovern
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2024
  • ISBN : 0197759882
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Holy Things written by Nathan McGovern and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common religious practice in Buddhist Thailand is asking "holy things" for help in return for an offering. These holy things include local spirits, Hindu gods, and famous Buddha images, which Thai people worship all in the same way. Some people, and even Thai Buddhists themselves, have argued that this is "syncretism"--a mixture of religions. Holy Things shows that what appears to be syncretism is actually an illusion. The worship of "holy things" is not a mixture of different religions, but the category of "holy things" is a mixture of different ways of talking about religion.

Download or read book Socialism written by C. M. Hann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialism as a political system may be on the wane, yet no one can doubt that its cultural legacies will make themselves felt for years to come, and on a worldwide scale. The contributors to this volume adopt a variety of anthropological approaches to illuminate changes which have removed socialists from power in many countries. Presenting detailed ethnographic accounts across a wide range of countries, they bring out the factors which have given socialism such a profound worldwide impact, including a substantial impact upon the discipline of anthropology itself. The first sustained and wide-ranging investigation of socialism by social anthropologists, this volume will enable readers to understand better how socialism has been experienced by millions of people and thereby to now better understand how they may cope with post-socialist dilemmas.

Book Cultural Crisis and Social Memory

Download or read book Cultural Crisis and Social Memory written by Charles F. Keyes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores social memory in the context of cultural crises of modernity in Thailand and Laos. It explicates the ways in which social memory constructed by the people enters modernity, and how this in turn causes fundamental ruptures with their past, as well as the various ways cultural crises are experienced in their lives. The essays in this book consider how in these crises the people constitute their cultural, social, or individual identities, particularly focusing on the theoretical issues of identifications and their relevance to distinct historical processes in Thailand and Laos. Both countries, particularly in the two decades since the 1970s, have been undergoing radical social and economic changes. Whilst Thailand has travelled down the road to industrialization, neighbouring Laos experienced a communist revolution in 1975 and only since the late 1980s has attempted to follow a reformist path to development. Increasingly influenced by globalised economic and social institutions, both countries have come to face crises that have made people insecure in the present and anxious about the future.
