Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all of us have a tradesman or craftsman a butcher, baker or candlestick maker somewhere in our ancestry, and Adle Emm's handbook is the perfect guide to finding out about them about their lives, their work and the world they lived in. She introduces the many trades and crafts, looks at their practices and long traditions, and identifies and explains the many sources you can go to in order to discover more about them and their families. Chapters cover the guilds, the merchants, shopkeepers, builders, smiths and metalworkers, cordwainers and shoemakers, tailors and dressmakers, coopers, wheelwrights and carriage-makers, and a long list of other trades and crafts. The training and apprenticeships of individuals who worked in these trades and crafts are described, as are their skills and working conditions and the genealogical resources that preserve their history and give an insight into their lives. A chapter covers the general sources that researchers can turn to the National Archives, the census, newspapers, wills, and websites and gives advice on how to use them. Adle Emm's introduction will be fascinating reading for anyone who is researching the social or family history of trades and crafts.

Book Dynamic Reading of the Holy Spirit in Luke Acts

Download or read book Dynamic Reading of the Holy Spirit in Luke Acts written by Ju Hur and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-19 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judging by the number of references to Holy Ghost in Luke's gospel and Acts, it is no wonder that Luke is designated as the “enthusiast in/for the Spirit” or that the Acts of the Apostles is called “the Acts of the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit has also been one of the most constantly debated subjects among the many issues concerning Luke and/or Acts. This study will re-visit the topic of the Holy Spirit in Luke-Acts through a new perspective. Part of this volume discusses three contemporary understandings of Lukan pneumatology; that of J. D. G. Dunn, R. P. Menzies and M. M. B. Turner. These reflect three different positions in regard to this subject.

Book God s Praise and God s Presence

Download or read book God s Praise and God s Presence written by Gabriele G. Braun and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to provide an answer to the question: is there a connection between God's people's praise and God's presence? The central argument is that Scripture in both Testaments testifies to a correlation between human praise and divine presence. This hypothesis has been investigated in the light of contemporary Christian worship culture and the ensuing need for further biblical studies, which represents the background for this investigation. The study achieves the above aim by applying biblical theology as a discipline and canonical and intertextual models as a method.

Book The Howells of Carbonear

Download or read book The Howells of Carbonear written by Donald E. Howell and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Howells of Carbonear is a thoroughly researched and sweeping genealogy that traces the 375-year documented history of the Howell family of Carbonear, Newfoundland. The Howells were planters, who came to Newfoundland to fish but did not return to England at the end of the season, remaining “planted” in the province. The book highlights the family’s early hardships, including the many deaths that resulted from the harsh conditions of the fisheries. Pioneers of early Newfoundland, the tenacious, resourceful, and closeknit Howells depended on extended family for survival. Containing twenty-five years of research and supplemented by original wills, deeds, court and church records, photographs, interviews, and stories passed down through generations, The Howells of Carbonear represents an astounding achievement in family genealogy. Donald E. Howell traces a direct line from the resilience of his ancestors to the Howells of today, offering readers a rare and extensive glimpse into his family’s history and heritage. This book is a valuable heirloom for Howell family descendants and a fascinating read for anyone interested in Atlantic Canada’s rich history.

Book The Pastoral Letters as Composite Documents

Download or read book The Pastoral Letters as Composite Documents written by James D. Miller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-08-14 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authorship of the Pastoral letters has been a matter of intense scholarly debate for almost two hundred years. The letters clearly purport to be written by Paul, but perceived differences in the literary style, vocabulary and theology of the Pastorals when compared with that of the genuine Pauline letters suggests that this was not so. The arguments have centred primarily on the question of whether Paul or a disciple of Paul - a gifted pseudonymist - composed these letters. It is the 'either/or' nature of the debate that is brought into serious question in this book. Dr Miller argues that the Pastorals reflect a compositional history that was commonplace throughout the ancient Near East. He takes the reader on a wide-ranging tour of biblical and extra-biblical sources, examining their literary histories, and arguing that the Pastorals are composite documents, not unlike many Jewish and early Christian works.

Book Composers of the Nazi Era

Download or read book Composers of the Nazi Era written by Michael H. Kater and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2000 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does creativity thrive in the face of fascism? How can a highly artistic individual function professionally in so threatening a climate? The final book in a critically acclaimed trilogy that includes Different Drummers (OUP 1992) and The Twisted Muse (OUP 1997), this is a detailed study of the often interrelated careers of eight outstanding German composers who lived and worked amid the dictatorship of the Third Reich: Werner Egk, Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Carl Orff, Hans Pfitzner, Arnold Schoenberg, and Richard Strauss. Noted historian Michael H. Kater weighs issues of accommodation and resistance to ask whether these artists corrupted themselves in the service of a criminal regime -- and if so, whether this is evident in their music. He also considers the degrees to which the Nazis poetically, socially, economically, and aesthetically succeeded in their treatment of these individuals, whose lives and compositions represent diverse responses to totalitarianism.
