Book Washington Monument Baltimore

Download or read book Washington Monument Baltimore written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington Monument, Baltimore: Account of Laying the Corner Stone, Raising the Statue, Description, &C, &C, 1849 Events arc the landmarks of history; a day, here and there, conspicuous for some great name, or stirring achievement, are the telegraphic posts that sustain the continuity between the present, and the history and traditions of the past. There are acts, which, at intervals, distinguish the Statesman, or the State, a Commonwealth, or a City. The 4th of July, 1815, rendered the more brilliant from a peace which had secured what our arms had vindicated, was a memorable day to the City of Baltimore. It was upon this day that her patriotic citizens decreed that a Monument, suited to the dignity and exalted character of the Sage, the Statesman, and the Hero, whom the people delighted to honor, should tower in the midst of their beautiful city. The conception and the resolutions were promptly followed by the execution of the work. A column, designed to perpetuate, in prominent relief, the gratitude of a portion of a great people to "Pater Patriæ," the Father of his Country, whose name and character peculiarly does belong, not to this nation, or this age, but to all nations, to the world, and to Time. This honorable memento of Baltimore, this becoming and appropriate tribute of her people, has been followed up by other cities, or States, to the revered leader through our Revolutionary ordeal, and to the brave spirits who cheerfully sacrificed their fortunes and their lives upon the sacred altar of our country's rights, and to the happiness of their posterity. This is the true test. While a free people remember the price of their liberties, their value will be held inestimable; and it is only when the sacrifices at which they were purchased shall be forgotten, that those immunities will be lost. Book Edgar Allan Poe s Baltimore

Download or read book Edgar Allan Poe s Baltimore written by David F. Gaylin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Allan Poe wrote his great works while living in several cities on the East Coast of the United States, but Baltimore's claim to him is special. His ancestors settled in the burgeoning town on the Chesapeake during the 18th century, and it was in Baltimore that he found refuge when his foster family in Virginia shut him out. Most importantly, it was here that he was first paid for his literary work. If Baltimore discovered Poe, it also has the inglorious honor of being the place that destroyed him. On October 7, 1849, he died in this city, then known as "Mob Town." Edgar Allan Poe's Baltimore is the first book to explore the poet's life in this port city and in the quaint little house on Amity Street, where he once wrote.

Book excerpt: This book is the only one that describes exclusively the architecture, history, and art associated with 23 of Baltimore's churches and synagogues dating from 1785 to 1887. Within these houses of worship, designed by leading architects of the day, are outstanding examples of windows, statuary, paintings, mosaics, carvings and religious artifacts. Robert Cary Long, Jr., Benjamin LaTrobe and Stanford White are a few of the architects. Louis Comfort Tiffany, John LaFarge, Constantine Brumidi and Hans Schuler represent some of the artisans. A majority of the buildings are National Historic Landmarks or are on the national Register of Historic Places. Churches parallel the development of the city. The book tells why each church or synagogue was founded, the particular ethnic or social group it served and how it adapted over the years to Baltimore's changing demographics. Each building has a special story to tell. Only those religious structures which still have active congregations or are used for religious ceremonies are included. These buildings are city treasures in terms of their history, architecture and artisans' contributions to the interiors. The structures are concentrated in downtown Baltimore and include a variety of neighborhoods. The book can be used as a guide to explore these Baltimore gems.

Book excerpt: Long cherished as the cultural heart of Baltimore, Mount Vernon Place arose in the wake of a contested idea: the construction of America's first freestanding monument to George Washington. Responding to opposition from local residents, Revolutionary War hero and Federalist statesman John Eager Howard offered part of his wooded estate as an alternative site for this bold and graceful Doric column. After its dedication in 1829, Howard's heirs developed the area into public parks and individual building lots. Mount Vernon Place became an early and successful model of nlightened civic virtue and shrewd commercial enterprise. Noted writer John Dorsey observes, "It is the history, the accumulated life, that gives the Place its depth of sensation." Images of America: Mount Vernon Place explores this depth and chronicles the growth of this gracious urban space from its 19thcentury origins to the present day.
