Book excerpt: Baltimore Catechisms one through four are a progressive presentation of the basics of the Catholic Faith. We are happy to be reproducing the original Baltimore Catechism series as prepared in the late 1800's. This is a textual reproduction of the original. No changes have been made, although a note on a relaxation of the Communion fast is placed in the appropriate section, while the original question and answer are retained unchanged from the original. It should be remembered that a catechism prepared in this manner represents part of the ordinary magisterium or teaching authority of the Church, emanating as it does with the approval of the Bishops. By order of the Second Council of Baltimore, a catechism was prepared for use in Catholic Churches in the United States. This was done by Father Kinkead and issued in four volumes for the various levels of study as the Baltimore Catechism. No. 1 for First Communion classes. No. 2 for Confirmation classes. No. 3 for two years' course for Post-Confirmation classes. No. 4 for Teachers and Teachers' Training classes. This is also known as An Explanation of the Baltimore Catechism and is numbered in harmony with Baltimore Catechism number 2. A chart of the 1950's fast laws has been added to the end of Baltimore number 4.

Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, there were repeated efforts in the United States to make a uniform textbook of Christian doctrine that all Catholics might be able to use. In 1829, the bishops assembled in the First Provincial Council of Baltimore to discuss the matter. They recommended using St. Bellarmine's catechism as a model. Finally, in the Third Plenary Council (1884), the Baltimore catechism in its present form took shape. This fourth volume (No. 4) is meant to be used as a reference work, or as a teacher's manual for the original Baltimore Catechisms. It is often used as an advanced textbook for explaining many of the basic questions people have about the Faith. There are also prayers given for suitable occasions. The source text for this work is: An explanation of the Baltimore Catechism of Christian doctrine: for the use of Sunday-school teachers and advanced classes, New York Benziger, 1921 by Thomas L Kinkead. Illustrations have been added to this text to illuminate the topics and persons referred to in the catechism.

Download or read book The Christianity Reader written by Mary Gerhart and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity is the world’s most populous religion, with some two billion adherents. As a world religion, Christianity has flourished because it is capable of taking on new forms in new contexts. To understand both the religion’s history and its present state, Mary Gerhart and Fabian Udoh gather original texts—from early Christian writings to contemporary documents on church-related issues—in The Christianity Reader. The most comprehensive anthology of Christian texts ever in English, this is a landmark sourcebook for the study of Christianity’s historical diversity. With newly edited, annotated, and translated primary texts, along with supplemental analytical essays, the volume allows Christianity, at long last, to speak in its many voices. Focusing on Christianity as a religion, Gerhart and Udoh select texts that illuminate issues such as theology, mysticism, and ritual, while also articulating the stories of previously marginalized groups, as well as those in new and growing epicenters of the religion. With nearly three hundred selections, the texts encompass the entire history of Christian writings excluding the New Testament, from Justin Martyr and Tertullian to Fabien Eboussi Boulaga and Teresa of Calcutta. Eight thematic sections cover biblical traditions and interpretations; early influences; nascent forms; patterns of worship; structures of community; philosophy, theology, and mysticism; twentieth-century issues and challenges; and the contemporary relationship between Christianity and other world religions. The Reader’s contents are arranged chronologically and are supported with introductions and source notes that explain the rationale for their inclusion and their context. Providing a far richer selection than ever before available in a single volume, The Christianity Reader will be welcomed as both a classroom resource and a work of reference for decades to come.

Book Metanoia A Catholic Book Series Book Number Three Vocation Common Priest by Baptism

Download or read book Metanoia A Catholic Book Series Book Number Three Vocation Common Priest by Baptism written by Cecil Donald Leighton, Jr. and published by Cecil Donald Leighton, Jr.. This book was released on 2023-09-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metanoia: A Catholic Book Series, Book Number Three: Vocation: Common Priest by Baptism is the author’s third publication in a series of Catholic books. In Vocation: Common Priest by Baptism, the author sets forth his personal experience in discerning whether Jesus Christ is calling him to share or participate in The Eternal Priesthood of Christ, as a common priest by Baptism or as a ministerial priest by Holy Orders. In answering this question, the author recounts 25 years of priestly misidentifications and associations made by strangers, parishioners, family, friends, and neighbors, connecting them with the irrevocable and inseparable gifts and call of a true Catholic priest (i.e., Sacerdos alter Christus). He is publishing this book in hopes that other Catholic men formally in discernment may find it instructive. Finally, this book is part of the author’s lay apostolate of Roman Catholic witness to the reality, power, and transforming/saving love of God, as well as the author’s response to and promotion of the Church’s “universal call to holiness” (Lumen Gentium) and the “new evangelization” (Novo Millenio Ineunte), in the electronically and globally connected virtual world of the Internet.

Book Faith Formation and Popular Religion

Download or read book Faith Formation and Popular Religion written by Anita De Luna and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses political, religious, and cultural history to examine catechesis. Sister de Luna establishes that religiosidad popular, the core theme for Hispanic theology, is Christian and Catholic and traces its elements in Church catechisms of the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries. She goes on to examine the relationship between theology of beauty, catechesis, and spirituality establishing that the three disciplines were integral to faith formation in the early church, but were separated through the centuries. An in-depth analysis of six selected catechisms reveals that popular religion as a combination of faith and culture was evident at the beginning of Hispanic Catholicism in the sixteenth century. The investigation notes the gradual elimination and eventual replacement of the cultural aspects in the catechetical texts in the nineteenth century. The author concludes that the reunification of the cultural spiritual symbols with the presentation of doctrine could revitalize catechesis and bring Christian evangelization to a renewed effectiveness.
