Book excerpt: North Carolina fiddler and banjo player Jim Scancarelli's extensive career as a string band musician began in the early 1960s. Through the 1970s, his annual recordings at the Union Grove Fiddlers Convention captured superlative music and performer interviews. Scancarelli also had a successful career as a freelance magazine artist and collaborated on the syndicated comic strips "Mutt and Jeff" and "Gasoline Alley," eventually taking over authorship of the latter in 1986. But when Ignatz and Krazy witness the mega-brick explosion in the desert, Krazy becomes depressed, and refuses to perform. To coax her back to work so they can regain their lost limelight, Ignatz invents his own brand of psychotherapy, orchestrates her kidnapping, and tries to seduce Krazy with promises of stardom from a Hollywood producer. As the mouse confronts the Kat with bewildering new concepts like sex, death, and politics, Ignatz and Krazy begin yearning to become round, for a fullness of body and spirit beyond their two-dimensional realm. Forming an altogether witty and winning counterpoint to George Herriman’s classic comic strip, Jay Cantor’s kinetic novel has become a classic in its own right, one of those masterpieces that creates its own unforgettable universe.

Book Military Comedy Films

Download or read book Military Comedy Films written by Hal Erickson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Charlie Chaplin's Shoulder Arms, released in America near the end of World War I, the military comedy film has been one of Hollywood's most durable genres. This generously illustrated history examines over 225 Army, Navy and Marine-related comedies produced between 1918 and 2009, including the abundance of laughspinners released during World War II in the wake of Abbott and Costello's phenomenally successful Buck Privates (1941), and the many lighthearted service films of the immediate postwar era, among them Mister Roberts (1955) and No Time for Sergeants (1958). Also included are discussions of such subgenres as silent films (The General), military-academy farces (Brother Rat), women in uniform (Private Benjamin), misfits making good (Stripes), anti-war comedies (MASH), and fact-based films (The Men Who Stare at Goats). A closing filmography is included in this richly detailed volume.

Book The Art of Humorous Illustration

Download or read book The Art of Humorous Illustration written by Nick Meglin and published by Watson-Guptill Publications. This book was released on 1981 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humorous illustration is a lively art, as varied in attitude as in means of execution. For the illustrator who specializes in humor or the artist who wishes to refine that aspect of his work, the problem of translating a comic point of view into a graphic reality is vital. The illustrators in this book, whose work appears in comic strips, magazines, paperbacks, books, greeting cards, and on television, explain how they manage to capture on paper the spontaneity, the essence, of their particular brands of wit. The twelve highly successful artists represented here offer a remarkably diverse sampling of subject matter, technique, and approach. This behind-the-scenes look at their lives and work explores the unique creative process of each. -- From publisher's description.
