Book excerpt: Ballistic Missile and Space Technology, Volume II: Propulsion and Auxiliary Power Systems focuses on the exchange of technical information and ideas among engineers and scientists working on ballistic missile and space programs, including hypersonics, aerodynamic heating, material structures, propulsion, communications, computers, and bioastronautics. The selection first offers information on the method for the interpretation of radiographic film of large solid propellant rockets and Soviet rocket propulsion. Discussions focus on applications, large Soviet liquid rocket engines, futuristic propulsion schemes, and Soviet rocket vehicles. The text then examines several criteria for determining the propellant bias for optimum performance of liquid propellant stages and precision determination of vacuum specific impulse from trajectory data. The manuscript tackles charged metal droplets for propulsion, versatile ion source for propulsion, and electrogasdynamic analysis of ion jet neutralization. The book also reviews pulsed plasma accelerator employing electrodes and electrostatic lift for space vehicles. Topics include energy relations, electric induction effects, electrical charging of objects in space, and factors affecting the performance of plasma accelerators. The selection is a primary reference for readers interested in space electronics.

Book Directed energy missile defense in space

Download or read book Directed energy missile defense in space written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1984 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Background Paper describes and assesses current concepts for directed-energy ballistic missile defense in space. Its purpose is to provide Members of Congress, their staffs, and the public with a readable introduction to the so-called 'Star Wars'technologies that some suggest might form the basis of a future nationwide defense against Soviet nuclear ballistic missiles. Since these technologies are a relatively new focus for U.S. missile defense efforts, little information about them has been readily available outside the expert community. Directed-energy or 'beam' weapons comprise chemical lasers, excimer and free electron lasers, nuclear bomb-powered x-ray lasers, neutral and charged particle beams, kinetic energy weapons, and microwave weapons. In addition to describing these devices, this Background Paper assesses he prospects for fashioning from such weapons robust and reliable wartime defense system resistant to Soviet countermeasures. The assessment distinguishes the prospects for perfect or ear-perfect protection of U.S. cities and population from the prospects that technology will achieve a modest, less-than-perfect level of performance that will nonetheless be seen by some experts as having strategic value. Though the focus is technical, the Paper also discusses, but oes not assess in detail, the strategic and arms control implications of a major U.S. move to develop and deploy ballistic missile defense (BMD).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook examines the militarization of space, providing a fair and balanced discussion of the emerging issues concerning space security and defense. The militarization of space is already underway, with unpredictable consequences for the way war will be conducted in the future. Military Space Power: A Guide to the Issuesexamines the militarization of space from historical, technological, and geopolitical angles. It traces space militarization from concepts proposed before World War II through the use of space for military surveillance and communications purposes to the actual deployment of weapons that pass through high-altitude space, such as ballistic missiles and nuclear-armed interceptors. The book focuses on the main space pioneers like the United States, Russia, and China, but also includes discussion of potential future players. It looks at the state of current space technology, but also projects how recent inventions or new discoveries might be weaponized for the space environment. And it analyzes how the militarization of space might influence international relations. The result is a fair and balanced discussion of the emerging issues concerning space security and defense.

Book The Militarization and Weaponization of Space

Download or read book The Militarization and Weaponization of Space written by Matthew Mowthorpe and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The militarization of space began as a rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union and grew to enormous proportions during the height of the Cold War. Satellite reconnaissance, navigation and weapons guidance, and electronic intelligence comprise only a few of the efforts taken to militarize and dominate space. Today as the prominence of information technology, computing, and telecommunications advances, so does the concept of space as a battlefield. In The Militarization and Weaponization of Space, Matthew Mowthorpe diligently analyzes the military space policies of the United States, the Soviet Union/Russia, and the People's Republic of China from the Cold War period to the present day. Mowthorpe focuses on the development of the ballistic missile defense and other anti-satellite systems and aptly assesses to what degree space will become armed. This work cogently addresses an issue of increasing urgency to scholars of international politics.
