Book Ballads of Hellas Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ballads of Hellas Classic Reprint written by William Hathorn Mills and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballads of Hellas Published by George Bell and Sons, London, England, in 1878, these ballads have been out of print for nearly forty years. I now re-publish them in the hope that they may again serve the purpose which they originally served - i. e. that, in running commentaries on the text of the original accounts in Herodotus and Xenophon, they may meet, so far as they go, the difficulty that young learners experience in grasping the subject matter of their translation-work. The general idea of them was of course suggested by Macaulay's Lays of Ancient Rome, but, so far as the spirit of them is concerned, there is more in them of Scott than of Macaulay. In those far-off days I tested the ballads by actual use, and was quite convinced of the value of the principle on which they were written. So forth they fare again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Ballads Instances perpetually occur in the Sagas: Grettir, Egil, Skarphedin, are always sing ing. In Kidnapped, Mr. Stevenson intro duces The Song of the Sword of Alan, a fine example of Celtic practice: words and air are beaten out together, in the heat of victory. In the same way, the women sang improvised dirges, like Helen; lul labies, like the lullaby of Dance in Simon ides, and flower songs, as in modern Italy. Every function of life, war, agriculture the chase, had its appropriate magical and mimetic dance and song, as in Finland, among Red Indians, and among Australian blacks. The deeds of men were chanted by heroes, as by Achilles; stories were told in alternate verse and prose; girls, like Homer's N ausicaa, accompanied dance and ball play, priests and medicine-men ac companied rites and magical ceremonies by songs.
