Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Balkan Question: The Present Condition of the Balkans and of European Responsibilities The idea of this volume first arose in consequence of the terrible events of the autumn of 1903, when Macedonia was the scene of one of those wholesale devastations, accompanied by massacre, which are a periodical feature of Near Eastern history. The situation is still one for great concern. The country has been laid waste, and the resources of the insurgents severely strained, while the Turks for the moment are afraid that the Powers, or some of them, might really be moved to act with energy, if they recommend their accustomed work. This has helped to keep the Macedonian Question less prominent than it was some eighteen months ago; and at the same time the more exciting events in the Far East have distracted the attention of Europe even from such significant Symptoms as have not been absent in the Balkans. But the eternal Eastern problem is by no means solved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems

Download or read book Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems written by Marion I. Newbigin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems: In Their Relation to the Great European War This little book is intended, as its title suggests, to summarize those geographical facts which made the Balkan Peninsula the potential storm-centre Of Europe, for long years before the summer sky' was rent by the lightning - flash which destroyed for ever the Old Europe, and changed in a moment all the familiar fabric of our daily life. The facts herein set forth do not seem to have been previ ously collected and correlated in an English book, and some Of them are not easy of access. At the same time, there can be little doubt that an ao quaintance with them, and with their political and social bearings, is of great importance in forming a judgment on desirable frontier changes in the region. Primarily, indeed, the book was begun with the desire to beguile for one non-combatant the gloom of the Winter of Waiting by the carry ing through of a self-imposed task which gave at least the illusion of usefulness. But it is hoped that this motive was not wholly illusory, and that the book may be found helpful to those who are striving to use their detachment from the actual field of battle to increase that knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Peace In particular, until events have decided otherwise, I shall not renounce the opinion that the present republican movements in Germany represent merely a transitory phase of a political transformation wh'ose outcome will be a democratized Empire still resting in the main upon a monarchical basis. At the moment of writing half the Sovereigns of Germany are exiles, and the other half are wondering what the morrow will bring. Forth. No one need pity these short-sighted men, who, had they been gifted with but a modicum of political sagacity, might still to-day have been ruling over communities as con tented as any in Europe. Nevertheless, it is probable that their fate in the end will be better than their, deserts. Throughout their history the Germans have been patient, long-suffering, and of great kindness to their. Book excerpt: From the assassination that triggered World War I to the ethnic warfare in Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, the Balkans have been the crucible of the twentieth century, the place where terrorism and genocide first became tools of policy. Chosen as one of the Best Books of the Year by The New York Times, and greeted with critical acclaim as "the most insightful and timely work on the Balkans to date" (The Boston Globe), Kaplan's prescient, enthralling, and often chilling political travelogue is already a modern classic. This new edition of Balkan Ghosts includes six opinion pieces written by Robert Kaplan about the Balkans between 1996 and 2000 beginning just after the implementation of the Dayton Peace Accords and ending after the conclusion of the Kosovo war, with the removal of Slobodan Milosevic from power.

Book The Western Balkans and the EU

Download or read book The Western Balkans and the EU written by Morton Abramowitz and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, more than fifteen years after the end of the wars that accompanied Yugoslavia's dissolution, the "Balkan question" remains more than ever a "European question". In the eyes of many Europeans in the 1990s, Bosnia was the symbol of a collective failure, while Kosovo later became a catalyst for an emerging Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). In the last decade, however, the overall thrust of the EU's Balkans policy has moved from an agenda dominated by security issues related to the war and its legacies to one focused on the perspective of the Western Balkan states' accession to the European Union. This Chaillot Paper, which features contributions from authors from various parts of the region, examines the current state of play in the countries of the Western Balkans with regard to EU accession. It brings together both views from the Balkans states themselves and overarching thematic perspectives. For the first time the European Union has become involved in the formation of new nation-states that also aspire to become members of the Union. The EU's transformative power has proved effective in integrating established states; now it is confronted with the challenge of integrating new and sometimes contested states. Against this background, this paper makes the case for a concerted regional approach to EU enlargement, and a renewed and sustained commitment to the European integration of the Western Balkans.

Download or read book The European Empire written by Josep Colomer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union will remain united, but incomplete, asymmetrical and with undefined borders. The EU, which is much more than a common market, but less than a super-state or federation, can be conceived as an "empire." With this approach, Josep Colomer analyzes the current Europe's dilemmas: the vanishing of the states' sovereignty, the core role of Germany, the border conflicts with the neighboring Russian Empire, the differences between the euro-zone and the other member-states, and the malaise of the United Kingdom and the temptation of Brexit. 'This essay will be of clear and lasting value to a range of actors on the international stage. It is erudite and scholarly, yet accessible and elegantly written, using humor and colorful metaphors to simplify a complex subject that is often treated in a dry and abstract way. The argument is innovative, yet confident and convincing.' Helen Margetts, University of Oxford, UK 'Josep M. Colomer's 'The European Empire' offers an easily readable discussion of the ways in which the European Union has developed and deals with ongoing challenges, by underlying its achievements but also its shortcomings. Clearly written for a broader audience.' Simon Hug, Universite de Geneve, Switzerland"

Book Peace as War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dražen Pehar
  • Publisher : Central European University Press
  • Release : 2019-04-10

Download or read book Peace as War written by Dražen Pehar and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about the peace implementation process in Bosnia-Herzegovina viewed, or interpreted reasonably, as a continuation of war by other means. Twenty years after the beginning of the Dayton peace accords, we need to summarize the results: the author shares the general agreement in public opinion, according to which the process is a failure. Pehar presents a broad, yet sufficiently detailed, view of the entire peace agreement implementation that preserves 'the state of war,' and thus encourages the war-prone attitudes in the parties to the agreement. He examines the political and narratological underpinnings to the process of the imposed international (predominantly USA) interpretation of the Dayton constitution and peace treaty as a whole. The key issue is the – perhaps only semi-consciously applied – divide ut imperes strategy. After nearly twenty years, the peace in document was not translated into a peace on the ground because, with regard to the key political and constitutional issues and attitudes, Bosnia remains a deeply divided society. The book concludes that the international supervision served a counter-purpose: instead of correcting the aberration and guarding the meaning that was originally accepted in the Dayton peace treaty, the supervision approved the aberration and imposed it as a new norm under the clout of 'the power of ultimate interpretation.'
