Satisfying this demand has been achieved by government sponsored expansion of the beef sector in some regions, importation of 'boxed' beef and live cattle, and increases in the off-take rate from established cattle populations. Such off-take from the Bali cattle heard in the Eastern Islands has led to speculation of a decline in numbers and loss of genetic merit of this important breed. Agaist this background ACIAR and CRIAS supported a project to provide a sound basis for government initiatives that support the Bali Cattle herd and the farmers who own and manage these cattle. The project considered the status of past and current breeding strategies and herd improvement programs, whether some of the concerns about herd size and quality are warranted, what breeding strategies would be best suited to the Eastern Islands, and what traits would be given highest priority in a breeding program. The project culminated in a workshop that brought together Indonesian and Australian expertise on Bali cattle production and herd improvement. These proceedings report input to that workshop and recommended strategies for the future development of the Bali cattle herd in eastern Indonesia.

Book excerpt: Bali cattle enterprise in Eastern Indonesia is characterized by low productivity and small holder farming system that rely heavily on natural resource for feed. Although innovations of improved forage and feeding management are available, Sumbawanese farmers still practice extensive traditional feeding system. This paper discusses approach and strategies applied to manage change on farmers' practices in a low input cattle production system aiming for higher productivity and profitability. An action research study was conducted in Sumbawa between 2010-2014 to assess contribution of approaches, methods and strategies towards farmers' practice changes. The research was entwined in an adaptive research project entitled “improving forage tree legume management for cattle fattening in Eastern Indonesia”. The study has shown that a combination of methods and strategies developed from the results of a community based situation analysis was effective to manage farmers towards practice changes. These methods included rising self awareness, adaptive trial, increasing knowledge and skills and providing access to inputs. The practice changes can be seen by farmers started implementing the introduced innovations including planting improved feed Leucaena sp. and improved cattle management. These changed practices subsequently have improved the cattle productivity which has provided increased return for farmers. This paper concludes that more intensive stakeholder participation in planning processes resulted in a greater sense of ownership over achievements, followed by faster, more sustainable and self-motivated practice change. Sustainable practice change is likely to lead to higher agricultural productivity, in turn enhancing farmers' livelihoods.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: A genetic evaluation of Bali cattle (Bos javanicus) using data from the Bali Cattle Improvement Project on the island of Bali was conducted. Results showed that contemporary group, sex of calf, age of calf and dam affected growth traits. Genetic improvement through selection for W-350d (h2 sub d= 0.5) might be achieved more quickly than selection for W-190d (h2 sub d= 0.4) and their positive direct genetic correlation (r sub d= 0.74). The estimates of maternal effects in Bali cattle were not different from 0; however, the genetic correlation between direct and maternal was moderately negative. The decline in W-350d might be caused by factors other than genetic due to the observed genetic values of W-190d and W-350d. A second study of the response to divergent selection for meat tenderness using Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF) values of Angus bulls was conducted at the Santa Fe Beef Research Unit of the University of Florida.
