Book Physical and Biological Controls of Copepod Aggregation and Baleen Whale Distribution

Download or read book Physical and Biological Controls of Copepod Aggregation and Baleen Whale Distribution written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our long-term goal is to develop a fundamental understanding of the physical and biological mechanisms that aggregate zooplankton on spatial scales of hundreds of meters to hundreds of kilometers. These aggregation processes have a profound effect on the distribution, movements, and behavior of top predators, including those that feed directly on zooplankton (e.g., basking sharks, manta rays, right whales). While all marine mammals rely on prey aggregation processes for their survival, baleen whales are perhaps most dependent upon these processes because of the enormous quantities of food they must consume daily. Therefore, we have chosen to focus our long-term research efforts on the interactions between baleen whales, zooplankton, and ocean physics to better understand the environmental factors that influence marine mammal distribution. The specific objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to elucidate the mechanisms of copepod aggregation in the Great South Channel, a major springtime feeding area for right, sei, humpback, and fin whales in the southwestern Gulf of Maine; and (2) to examine the relationship between these mechanisms and the distribution and abundance of baleen whales.

Book Factors Influencing Blue Whale Aggregations Off Southern Sri Lanka

Download or read book Factors Influencing Blue Whale Aggregations Off Southern Sri Lanka written by Asha De Vos and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated] Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) inhabiting the Northern Indian Ocean are thought to comprise a distinct population or even potentially a different subspecies. Elsewhere, blue whales migrate long distances between lower latitude wintering grounds and higher latitude summer feeding grounds. Northern Indian Ocean blue whales, however, are thought to reside in tropical waters year-round including Sri Lankan waters. They have been documented engaging in courtship displays and as mother-calf pairs. They are also observed defaecating and in aggregations typical of feeding areas. The presence and colouration of the scats is good indication that these whales feed on euphausiids in these low latitude waters. Blue whales are found relatively close to the southern coast of Sri Lanka, an area subject to seasonally reversing monsoonal currents, and where a deep submarine canyon incises the narrow, steep continental shelf. A combination of satellite imagery, field data and numerical modelling were used to examine the physical processes and their potential influence on the distribution of blue whales. The study defined the circulation patterns around Sri Lanka in order to provide an explanation for the year-round, elevated chlorophyll levels along the southern coast. The numerical model also elucidated a previously undocumented shorter period of sporadic upwelling off southern Sri Lanka during the Northeast monsoon. The major upwelling region is located along the south coast and is shown to be due to flow convergence and divergence associated with offshore transport of water. The location of the upwelling centre was dependent on the relative strengths of wind driven flow along the east and west coasts.

Book Biology and Ecology of Antarctic Krill

Download or read book Biology and Ecology of Antarctic Krill written by Volker Siegel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a unique insight into the current knowledge of krill population dynamics including distribution, biomass, production, recruitment, growth and mortality rates. Detailed analysis is provided on food and feeding, reproduction and krill behaviour. The volume provides an overview on the aspects of natural challenges to the species, which involve predation, parasites and the commercial exploitation of the resource and its management. A chapter on genetics shows the results of population subdivision and summarizes recent work on sequencing transcriptomes for studying gene function as part of the physiology of live krill. The focus of Chapter 4 is on physiological functions such as biochemical composition, metabolic activity and growth change with ontogeny and season; and will demonstrate which environmental factors are the main drivers for variability. Further discussed in this chapter are the bottle necks which occur in the annual life cycle of krill, and the mechanisms krill have adapted to cope with severe environmental condition.

  • Pages : 695 pages

Download or read book Ecology written by Charles J. Krebs and published by Benjamin-Cummings Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best-selling majors ecology book continues to present ecology as a series of problems for readers to critically analyze. No other text presents analytical, quantitative, and statistical ecological information in an equally accessible style. Reflecting the way ecologists actually practice, the book emphasizes the role of experiments in testing ecological ideas and discusses many contemporary and controversial problems related to distribution and abundance. Throughout the book, Krebs thoroughly explains the application of mathematical concepts in ecology while reinforcing these concepts with research references, examples, and interesting end-of-chapter review questions. Thoroughly updated with new examples and references, the book now features a new full-color design and is accompanied by an art CD-ROM for instructors. The field package also includes The Ecology Action Guide, a guide that encourages readers to be environmentally responsible citizens, and a subscription to The Ecology Place (www.ecologyplace.com), a web site and CD-ROM that enables users to become virtual field ecologists by performing experiments such as estimating the number of mice on an imaginary island or restoring prairie land in Iowa. For college instructors and students.
