Book Phantom Past Indigenous Presence

Download or read book Phantom Past Indigenous Presence written by Colleen E. Boyd and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imagined ghosts of Native Americans have been an important element of colonial fantasy in North America ever since European settlements were established in the seventeenth century. Native burial grounds and Native ghosts have long played a role in both regional and local folklore and in the national literature of the United States and Canada, as settlers struggled to create a new identity for themselves that melded their European heritage with their new, North American frontier surroundings. In this interdisciplinary volume, Colleen E. Boyd and Coll Thrush bring together scholars from a variety of fields to discuss this North American fascination with "the phantom Native American." "Phantom Past, Indigenous Presence" explores the importance of ancestral spirits and historic places in Indigenous and settler communities as they relate to territory and history--in particular cultural, political, social, historical, and environmental contexts. From examinations of how individuals reacted to historical cases of "hauntings," to how Native phantoms have functioned in the literature of North Americans, to interdisciplinary studies of how such beliefs and narratives allowed European settlers and Indigenous people to make sense of the legacies of colonialism and conquest, these essays show how the past and the present are intertwined through these stories.

Book The Nature of Empires and the Empires of Nature

Download or read book The Nature of Empires and the Empires of Nature written by Karl S. Hele and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2013-09-28 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on themes from John MacKenzie’s Empires of Nature and the Nature of Empires (1997), this book explores, from Indigenous or Indigenous-influenced perspectives, the power of nature and the attempts by empires (United States, Canada, and Britain) to control it. It also examines contemporary threats to First Nations communities from ongoing political, environmental, and social issues, and the efforts to confront and eliminate these threats to peoples and the environment. It becomes apparent that empire, despite its manifestations of power, cannot control or discipline humans and nature. Essays suggest new ways of looking at the Great Lakes watershed and the peoples and empires contained within it.

Book The Valley of the Lower Thames 1640 to 1850

Download or read book The Valley of the Lower Thames 1640 to 1850 written by Fred Coyne Hamil and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1973-12-15 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few are the regions in the province of Ontario so rich and rewarding to the reader interested in local history as the valley of the Lower Thames. As the author tells us with warmth and enthusiasm of the early settlers, roads, bridges, inns, and mills of his native region, his story takes on a wider significance. Here, indeed, is the story of pioneer Canada, "writ small." The valley of the Lower Thames includes the greater part of what is now the county of Kent, and comprises one of the richest and most populous agricultural areas of modern Ontario. For many years it remained separated from the upper river settlements by miles of primeval forest. The Thames River was the highroad for commerce and travel that bound the people on both its banks into one community, and connected them with other communities far beyond. Professor Hamil has embellished what is commonly known of such striking pioneer figures as Thomas Talbot, the Ainse family, and others, with additional fascinating details, and brings before us many figures less well known to history but whose careers arouse admiration, sympathy, curiosity, and amusement.
