Book excerpt: Each year, men spend an enormous amount of time and money searching for a cure to male pattern baldness. Numerous psychological assessments indicate that the reasons behind their futile efforts are sound: attitudes toward bald men are overwhelmingly negative. From the first torturous attempts at hair implants early in this century to the faddish, well-hyped drug treatments of today, the extremes to which men have gone in an effort to regrow hair or cover their bald scalps are examined in this work. The various causes for baldness advanced by credible members of the medical establishment over the years are detailed, as well as instances of outright quackery prompted by numerous individuals and companies. Wigs, weaving, transplants, flaps and scalp reduction are among the techniques explained.

Mankind's Historic Quest to End Baldness is a social history of one of humanity's most irksome problems: male pattern baldness. Throughout the centuries, Man (not his real name) has tried everything to hide, treat and repair baldness, as well as a host of nostrums designed to coax hair growth from the scalp (or, at least, money from the wallets of unsuspecting baldies). Yet we stand on the brink of a truly historic epoch: Two drugs are now federally approved remedies for baldness and more are on the way while surgical techniques continue to improve, and even hairpieces are becoming acceptable again. Will baldness, the stigma it carries, and the profound psychological toll it takes on men soon be things of the past? Will bald men someday be electable? Are these even rhetorical questions? Gersh Kuntzman takes you from the laboratories of Merck, maker of Propecia, to the operating rooms of the nation's best hair-transplant surgeons, to the rug men working on the cutting edge of artificial hair design. Hair! covers baldness like nothing before.

Book The Summer of Her Baldness

Download or read book The Summer of Her Baldness written by Catherine Lord and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No eyebrows. No eyelashes. When it rains the water will run straight down into my eyes," Catherine Lord wrote before her hair fell out during chemotherapy. Propelled into an involuntary performance piece occasioned by the diagnosis of breast cancer, Lord adopted the online persona of Her Baldness—an irascible, witty, polemical presence who speaks candidly about shame and fear to her listserv audience. While Lord suffers from unwanted isolation and loss of control as her treatment progresses, Her Baldness talks back to the society that stigmatizes bald women, not to mention middle-aged lesbians with a life-threatening disease. In this irreverent and moving memoir, Lord draws on the e-mail correspondence of Her Baldness to offer an unconventional look at life with breast cancer and the societal space occupied by the seriously ill. She photographs herself and the rooms in which she negotiates her disease. She details the clash of personalities in support groups, her ambivalence about Western medicine, her struggles to maintain her relationship with her partner, and her bemusement when she is mistaken for a "sir." She uses these experiences—common to the one-in-eight women who will be diagnosed at some point with breast cancer—to illuminate larger issues of gender signifiers, sexuality, and the construction of community.

This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Baldness Stimulation of the Scalp Talking about Dyeing Main Reasons for Hair Fall Traditional Shampoos Pressure Therapy Dandruff Coconut Oil Remedy Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction No, this is not a bad hair day, I am just stressed out… It could have been a bad hair day, hair not being managed properly, flying all over your face and all over the place, tumbling down from out of a snood or even out of a French braid or piled it high up on your head and stuck the creative artistry with jeweled pins, and so on. People having long hair may suffer from this problem, and that is why in the 20s and 30s, women decided to have their head shingled and bobbed, where once upon a time in Victorian times, long hair was considered to be the mark of feminine beauty. This hair was then supported with artificial ringlets, pads, Tufts, and even women wore toupees. These additional adornments and fixtures to the hair were called “rats.” Nowadays most of us wash our hair nearly every day, depending on its length, but in Victorian times, that was done only once every eight days with a rinse made up of egg yolks beaten in warm water, and rubbed over the hair. This was then washed with lukewarm water to make the hair shiny. But what about the scalp, you may ask. They did not bother much about cleaning the scalp, as long as the hair was squeaky clean. And then when they suffered from dandruff and others scalp related diseases, they cleaned the scalp with orris root powder applied at night, and then brushed out the next morning. They also used pomades and even some unguents made up of bear grease- phew, what a pong! – But then I guess, when everybody in the vicinity is smelling of bear grease, the nose gets accustomed to it… Nevertheless, for our amusement, here is the famous Mrs. Beeton’s recipe for pomade published in 1861. Here you did not use the fat taken from a poor unfortunate brown bear – Russian for choice. I am not joking! What fools these vain mortals be. Anyway, this pomade was made by ¼ pound of lard – equally pong making to our oh so sensitive 21st century noses-, scent of choice and two Penny worths of castor oil. The lard was unsalted. It was beaten up, the castor oil was added to it during the beating process, with the help of a kitchen knife, and few drops of your preferred scent. This pomade was then put into porcelain or glass pots, and then covered well so that it did not turn rancid.

Book So You re Going Bald

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julius Sharpe
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2019-04-02
  • ISBN : 0062859404
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book So You re Going Bald written by Julius Sharpe and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational, uplifting, and thoroughly hilarious, this rollicking “bald memoir” is a one-stop guide to appreciating life as you lose your hair, and offers dating, grooming, marriage, sex, and even toupee advice for bald men and the people who claim to love them. Humorist and comedy television writer Julius Sharpe woke up on 9/11 to his own personal disaster: his hair was falling out. So You’re Going Bald is his hilarious odyssey—a tale filled with despair, horror, acceptance, and humor that everyone can relate to, whether you’re nineteen or approaching ninety—or are simply bald-curious. As Julius tells it, going bald is for-real traumatic. Losing his hair preoccupied his days and kept him up Googling every night for five straight years. He suffered in private, but now he’s making it his mission that no cue ball will live alone with the agony of hair loss ever again. Sharpe examines what it means to be hairless up top, and walks you through how to look at yourself in the mirror and not want to die. He outlines the three stages of baldness (anger, more anger, even more anger), and volunteers himself as a guinea pig, testing laser helmets, plugs, and toupees. So You’re Going Bald is one-part tough love and one-part inspiration . . . the same way that Fran Drescher’s Cancer Schmancer inspired a cure for schmancer. We all know someone who is bald, or going bald, or got their hair cut way too short. In So You’re Going Bald, Sharper provides an emotional roadmap for living life in the bald lane, giving voice to what it feels like to know that “grass doesn’t grow on a busy street.”
