Book Law and Development

Download or read book Law and Development written by Piotr Szwedo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the concept of ‘development’ from alternative perspectives and analyzes how different approaches influence law. ‘Sustainable development’ focuses on balancing economic progress, environmental protection, individual rights, and collective interests. It requires a holistic approach to human beings in their individual and social dimensions, which can be seen as a reference to ‘integral human development’ – a concept found in ethics. ‘Development’ can be considered as a value or a goal. But it also has a normative dimension influencing lawmaking and legal application; it is a rule of interpretation, which harmonizes the application of conflicting norms, and which is often based on the ethical and anthropological assumptions of the decision maker. This research examines how different approaches to ‘development’ and their impact on law can coexist in pluralistic and multicultural societies, and how to evaluate their legitimacy, analyzing the problem from an overarching theoretical perspective. It also discusses case studies stemming from different branches of law.

(ii) Are women's time savings resulting from increased access to infrastructure used for productive work that also reduces consumption poverty? (iii) Can infrastructure projects more effectively reduce both time and consumption poverty for women?

Book excerpt: How can governments and companies be jointly empowered to have a positive impact on the sustainable development goals? The current economic system is largely geared towards increasing economic growth. But this could come at the expense of rising social inequality and environmental degradation. This paper examines the link between economic system outcomes and corporate sustainability outcomes. We provide evidence that governments and companies can reinforce each other in their pursuit of sustainable development. Sustainable development is based on three pillars: economic, social and environmental. These pillars should be assessed and balanced in an integrated way. An impact economy, in which governments and companies balance profit and impact, is best placed to achieve the sustainable development goals.

Book Balancing Land Conservation and Economic Development

Download or read book Balancing Land Conservation and Economic Development written by Katharine Emans Sims and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third essay considers the case of local land conservation regulations in Massachusetts, asking how wetlands bylaws have impacted rates of land use change and housing development. Estimates of impacts rely on variation in the timing of adoption of wetlands protection measures. The third essay finds that wetlands bylaws have reduced the expansion of land used for residential development, but have not had significant effects on housing stock, housing prices, or housing density. The adoption of bylaws by neighboring communities, however, does significantly increase housing prices, suggesting possible regional supply constraints driven by the regulations.

Book China s Logic The Balance Development

Download or read book China s Logic The Balance Development written by Lixing Zou and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law of balance is not just a motivating power but also serves the purpose of development. How did human society develop in a balanced manner in history? How is China's Modernization impacted by the law of equilibrium? How does the law of balance affect China's economic and trade relations with other countries? This book attempts to answer these questions and more. It applies the balance law methodology to systematically analyze major factors influencing the sustainable development of the Chinese economy and society, and to discuss the balanced way of thinking, market credit, innovation energy and international collaboration that boost sustainable development. While the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics needs a balanced development perspective, solving the problem of imbalance requires a balanced approach as well as a balanced interaction between man, nature and society, which is the key factor for economic development in the 21st century.

Book Striking a Balance

Download or read book Striking a Balance written by Alan Fowler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of rapid global change, development NGOs are having to scale up their impact, diversify their activities, respond to long-term crises and improve their performance on all fronts. Striking a Balance offers both analysis and a practical guide to how NGDOs can fulfil these demanding expectations. Written for all those involved with NGDO work, the book describes the objectives of sustainablepeople-centred development and the process required to achieve it, focusing on the five factors which determine effectiveness: suitable organisational design; competent leadership and human resources; appropriate external relationships; mobilisation of high quality finance; and the measurement of performance coupled to 'learning for leverage'. In each are the book explains the capacities needed and how they can be assessed and improved. Effectiveness calls for NGDOs which retain their non-profit values, establish the right type of Professionalism, manage dilemmas and balance choices to continually reflect the priorities, rights and needs of those who give them legitimacy: people who are poor and marginalised. This book provides a reference of current and future practices which will help NGDOs to do so.
