As the two countries chosen as examples differ significantly in their adaptation strategies and the corresponding legal regulations, the author presents general ideas on how any legal framework facing similar challenges could be improved. In particular, (flood) risk assessments, coastal defences and flood-resistant design as well as spatial and land use planning are discussed, including managed retreat. Moreover, conflicts as well as potential synergies of coastal adaptation and nature conservation are examined.Due to the thorough analysis this book is not just an essential read for policymakers and researchers interested in the coastal area but climate change adaptation in general as many general findings are transferrable to other impacts.

Book The Changing Faces of Europe s Coastal Areas

Download or read book The Changing Faces of Europe s Coastal Areas written by European Environment Agency and published by Office for Official Publications of the European Communities. This book was released on 2006 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Conceptual Structure in Lexical Items

Download or read book Conceptual Structure in Lexical Items written by Kristel Proost and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-11-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the occurrence of lexical gaps in the domain of linguistic action verbs. Though these constitute a considerable proportion of the verb inventory of many languages, not all concepts of verbal communication may be expressed by lexical items in any particular one of them. Introducing a conceptual system which allows gaps to be searched for systematically, this study shows which concepts of verbal communication are and which are not lexicalised in English, German and Dutch. The lexicalisation patterns observed shed light on the way in which verbal behaviour is conceptualised in a particular speech community. To complete the picture, the volume also addresses the question of whether communication concepts which may not be expressed by verbs may be lexicalised by fixed multiword expressions.

Book Climate Change and the Future of Europe

Download or read book Climate Change and the Future of Europe written by Michael Kaeding and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the ambitious objectives outlined in the EU’s Green Deal aim at making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, national implementation greatly varies depending on local geographies, history, culture, economics, and politics. This book analyses Member States’ and EU neighbours’ national efforts to combat climate change. It subsequently draws on these factors to highlight local challenges, tensions, and opportunities on the road towards climate neutrality. In the context of inter-country dependencies following Russia’s war against Ukraine, it addresses strategic questions regarding EU integration, the transformation of our economies, the reduction of energy dependencies, and public perception of the above. The book also makes concrete recommendations, in various policy areas, on how individual countries and the EU as a whole should deal with the climate crisis.
