Book Metals and Neurodegeneration Restoring the Balance

Download or read book Metals and Neurodegeneration Restoring the Balance written by Anthony R. White and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biometals such as copper, zinc and iron have key biological functions, however, aberrant metabolism can lead to detrimental effects on cell function and survival. These biometals have important roles in the brain, driving cellular respiration, antioxidant activity, intracellular signaling and many additional structural and enzymatic functions. There is now considerable evidence that abnormal biometal homeostasis is a key feature of many neurodegenerative diseases and may have an important role in the onset and progression of disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, prion and motor neuron diseases. Recent studies also support biometal roles in a number of less common neurodegenerative disorders. The role of biometals in a growing list of brain disorders is supported by evidence from a wide range of sources including molecular genetics, biochemical studies and biometal imaging. These studies have spurred a growing interest in understanding the role of biometals in brain function and disease as well as the development of therapeutic approaches that may be able to restore the altered biometal chemistry of the brain. These approaches range from genetic manipulation of biometal transport to chelation of excess metals or delivery of metals where levels are deficient. A number of these approaches are offering promising results in cellular and animal models of neurodegeneration with successful translation to pre-clinical and clinical trials. At a time of aging populations and slow progress in development of neurotherapeutics to treat age-related neurodegenerative diseases, there is now a critical need to further our understanding of biometals in neurodegeneration. This issue covers a broad range of topics related to biometals and their role in neurodegeneration. It is hoped that this will inspire greater discussion and exchange of ideas in this crucial area of research and lead to positive outcomes for sufferers of these neurodegenerative diseases.

Book Whole Brain Learning Theory in Education

Download or read book Whole Brain Learning Theory in Education written by Joyce Diane Schulz and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Master Thesis at Argosy University in December 2010 was to identify dominant learning modalities, as understood by the nine Multiple intelligences of Dr. Howard Gardner (Garner, 1993), the intelligences of right/left-brain dominance processing fields leading to whole brain theory in education. It can be called the Balanced Whole Learner, Whole Mind/Open mind learning methods. The brain dominance seems to be part of the Multiple Intelligence preference fields (Connell, 1996). Fifty secondary students, ten diverse adult learners, two administrators and eight teachers were part of the surveys done through 2009-2010. At the back of the text are diagnostic surveys, a potential interested person can take to determine their dominant learning styles. The questions that were asked was whether or not the adult learner or students were aware of the learning style preferences, and did they want to be aware of them.? The second focus was did their heritage, language, culture, educational level, or gender affect their learning style preferences? The researcher found positive data that supports these issues. The other information supports that brain dominance, MI theories are interwoven within each other as a composite Whole Brain Learning Theory. The text gives resources, findings and recommendations on how it can be implemented in a public school learning environment. The modalities can be integrated into a composite whole, and not separate categories, but an interwoven process to discover a persons brain processing. This is a valuable resources for an administrator, teacher, student, and adults to understand their unique method of processing information called the Whole Brain Learning Theory of education.

By rebooting our hard-wired patterns of thinking - through so-called 'altered states of consciousness' - we can gain new perspectives into ourselves and the world around us. From shamans in Peru to tech workers in Silicon Valley, Kingsland provides a fascinating tour through lucid dreams, mindfulness, hypnotic trances, virtual reality and drug-induced hallucinations. An eye-opening insight into perception and consciousness, this is also a provocative argument for how altered states can significantly boost our mental health.

  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2019-07-26
  • ISBN : 0309490111
  • Pages : 493 pages

Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

  • ISBN : 164411075X
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Deva written by Jacquelyn E. Lane and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth introduction to the Deva Kingdom and our relationship with Deva • Explores how we partner with Deva in our everyday lives to evolve both our kingdom and theirs • Explains the hierarchy of the Deva kingdom, from elementals and nature spirits to higher angelic Deva and every level in between • Offers suggestions on how to communicate with the Deva of trees and plants as well as the angelic kingdom • Shares the author’s personal experiences with Deva around the world Nature spirits, faeries, gnomes, and their higher angelic counterparts who overlight landscapes, mountains, rivers, and plants have held a fascination for people worldwide for countless generations. The Deva kingdom is essentially the world’s form builders, the symphony at the heart of Creation, yet Deva is so much more than the joyful beings that animate what we call Nature. We each have a very personal and direct relationship with Deva via our physical, astral, emotional, and mental elementals, but this connection has been forgotten or, at the very least, overlooked. When we partner with Deva in our everyday lives, we can help evolve both our kingdom and aspects of theirs. Exploring the realm of Deva and our relationship with them, Jacquelyn E. Lane introduces us to the hierarchy of the Deva kingdom, from elementals and nature spirits to higher Deva and the levels in between. She examines the metaphysics that underlie their existence and how the energy of Deva is intrinsic to all that we experience. Deva is a Sanskrit word meaning “Being of Light,” an appropriate name as Deva sing light out of the primordial darkness to create forms for Being. Sharing her personal experiences with Deva in many lands over four decades, the author investigates our relationship with Deva, in particular via the elementals of our human constitution, and how we can communicate with the Deva of trees and plants as well as the angelic kingdom. Through scientific discoveries and cultural traditions, we discover the impact we have on Deva and how we use and even “create” new forms of Deva via our inventions and collective activity. Jacquelyn also looks at the orchestrating function of higher Deva and the wider implications of our understanding of Deva, including the role of Deva in Pan consciousness--our increasing realization of the intricate matrix of life within and between all the kingdoms on Earth. Offering not only an in-depth introduction to the world of Deva but also a glimpse of their wisdom, humor, and joy, this book reveals how we can begin to hear their complex song, find our own song, and work with the appropriate subtle layers of the Deva kingdom to grow and evolve.
